Staying in the building would be an on-fireable offence.

You mean if he died of smoke inhalation? I suppose that is true.

OP says office, article places the workers in a field. Being outside to begin with doesn't make fleeing less reasonable when a wildfire raining ash is involved.
If you'll excuse me, I've got to check my produce for ash, soot, and crispy farmhand...

It's OK, if they got lung damage from smoke inhalation they can just go to the emergency room.

For these guys, doing anything that goes against what the boss says is a firing.  Even if it means a horrible death.

don't worry guys, The Invisible Dong Of The Free Market will prevent another triangle shirtwaist factory

What labor unions?  The ones that are melting away while being blamed by the right wing for all of America's ills?

Damn unions, interfering in employers' freedoms again.
Let the market decide if conditions are too dangerous to work.  These Mexicans are just looking for a free handout.  The farmer has the right to only employ people who don't mind working in a burning field.

Sounds like the farm is missing out on a huge marketing campaign:

Berries to Die For

Union reps, including Barrajas, met with the farm's managers and applied a union rule, "No worker shall work under conditions where they feel his life or health is in danger."

Next time you see some Teabagger shooting their mouth off against unions, know that they want you to be forced into unsafe hellholes where your death is not only possible, but likely. You would have little value to your owners, and you would be easily replaced shortly after the machinery is hosed off, assuming they even stop the line long enough to even bring out the hose at all.

I worked on summer as a strawberry picker.
Got good an dark, and I spoke Spanish, anyway.
The stuff I over heard from the Farm owners and staff who thought I didn't know English was enough to convince me they were bad people.

oh crap.  you figured out the plan of the Tea Party:  they want to kill everyone in the world.

tighten that tin hat of yours Vinnie - since you figured it out, it is only a matter of time until the Black Helicopters, piloted by a guy in a hover-round, finds you.

Why does this call to mind that episode of Fawlty Towers where Basil calmly shoves Manuel into a burning kitchen without a second thought? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the farm owners and sadly a lot of business owners call to mind Basil Fawlty. The last boss I had certainly did.

The horrifying thing is that a lot of businessmen see their employees as disposable cogs to be replaced at will. And they HATE their employees for reasons that a sane man could never fathom. Maybe the bosses think their employees are just a useless expense forced on them by a lot of Gawdless pinko subversives who don't see that work is freedom and that having to pay these ingrates who should be thanking their lucky stars they are granted the privilege of work is just too much. Or maybe they're all tight fisted old misers who hate everything but money, I don't know.

Well, how else can you explain away the reasons for doing what they do? The sh*t they want to do would make everyone's life a Living Hell.

You do realize the farm will just pick up more migrant workers fresh from the border and will carry on as business as usual?

Are there no more unions still around?  I thought there were still a few, particularly in this sector.

The reason for the right-wing fuss is the inappropriate overreaching by unions.  Preventing workers from dying in fires?  That's perfect.  That's exactly what unions were invented for.  More power to them!  Preventing me from pushing a chair from one room to the room next door because furniture moving is a union job?  Fark you.

THIS is why we will never have any meaningful immigration reform. The people who own this country want their cheap, exploitable labor force. If we kick out all of the immigrants, they'll have to hire US citizens, who will probably make unreasonable demands like a living wage and overpriced, crappy health insurance. If we give the immigrants citizenship, well, you have basically the same problem. It's much better to write "tough" immigration laws to appease the base and then make sure that those laws cannot/will not be enforced. That way you can create the illusion that you are trying to fix immigration without stepping on any toes that might be attached to fat wallets.

I'd like to point out that their union also did their job - the union held the farm accountable, reached a settlement, and ensured that the workers could get their jobs back if they wanted them. (Kudos for all but one declining the offer - any farm willing to do this, is also willing to hold a grudge, and so those workers would have been fired, quietly, later on for other manufactured offenses.)

But, no, unions are bad and evil, holding back job creators while supporting lazy workers.

Tell me exactly what you think they do?
Be specific.

I'll start:

Less federal government intervention and waste (note, I didn't say NO government)
Less taxes
Hover-arounds for everyone (okay, I threw that one in for fun)

They got jobs at other farms...and I suspect that "cheap illegal labor" notwithstanding, the first farm may have trouble finding and keeping good workers when word of this gets out.
