I guess NY is such a blue state that the Dems have to fill the roles of both parties.

UNPOSSIBLE!

Yes.
How about Jose Peralta leaning on the Queens DA to prosecute a real estate broker after investors lost money in the real estate crash?
Look into that, FBI.
Illegal use of influence is a crime, right?

I'm thinking it isn't so much that he's not on the take, as he's more careful/better than hiding it than his peers.

Not entirely true. Malcolm Smith isn't really a Democrat; he joined Jeff Klein's Independent Democratic Conference to caucus with the Republicans. Klein himself got Senate ethics charges dismissed by the new Republican leadership when he handed over control of the Senate and redistricting to them, but he's going to be indicted and taken out soon. The Republican majority leader was taken out in a massive corruption sting that led to Democrats taking control of the State Senate for the first time in about 40 years back in 2008. The Republicans and their allies manage at least equal per capita corruption, rest assured.

It's more that the Albany Machine was once a serious rival to the Chicago Machine for "most grossly corrupt" (after Tammany Hall was knocked out of the running). Perhaps unlike Chicago, New York's corruption has been attenuating since the 1950s; however, that starting point means that even a lot of attenuating still leaves plenty of headroom for cockroaches.

I suspect the largest reason that the GOP doesn't do better is that while the candidates fielded by the Democrats may tend to be corrupt, they also tend to be competent. Since New York has a trillion dollar economy, even when they steal a million bucks a year apiece, the damage tends to be less than would be done from incompetence by the idiots and religious fanatics the Republicans try fielding.

They're just weeding out the minor-league politicians stupid enough to be obvious about it. The candidate graduating to the "next level" is the one that wasn't "caught".

You know how in ancient Sparta, the young boys were formed into troops and had to fend for themselves, and were expected to steal from villagers to get enough to eat. But if they got CAUGHT stealing, then they were punished.

It's kinda like that.

Are they trying to catch up to Massachusetts or Chicago?

Always amusing seeing how few liberals dare to venture in threads on Democrat corruption.  But even mention Palin... wooo boy.

Always amusing when people finally realize that greed and corruption are not ideological.

I think that was Random's point.
