I just want to reassure you that you are correct. Go forth with your day, confident that you've done good work today.

It's a chicken or egg thing. Do you innately feel more confident or are you merely reflecting back the positive response you get from others for not standing like Igor?

If anyone has links to resources on how to improve posture that are legit, I'd love to see them. Websites, books, whatever.... so long as it's not "Dr. Amazing's Posture SOLUTION in just 10 days - only $99.95!" or a link that just says "Stand up straight already, moran."

If pay-walled, first step is to see is to try the mobile version. Than see if it's been spidered by your favorite search engine or web cache.  Mobile Google

There has to be a good bit of a fitness component as well, no? When I sit up straight and roll my shoulders back with an open chest I get tired and slouch back down in less than five minutes. If you're strong, fit, and thin of course you'd be more confident. The hormonal part of the article is interesting though - coming after the research that says 90 degree or tighter sitting posture and sedentary job reduce life expectancy.

I slouch, put my feet up, and have an athletic build.

Maybe that's why I'm not dead yet.

Stand with relaxed shoulders like your head is being held up with a string. For proper chest position, imagine shooting lasers out of your nipples. Aim high with those lasers.

I know what my body feels like when I'm standing up straight, but it's uncomfortable to do so for any length of time. I tried to get a personal trainer many years ago to help me out, and the exercises she gave me weren't helpful. My back muscles had this really weird crackling/bubbling sensation when I did the exercises. Not pleasant. Google hasn't helped me figure out why that would happen, and the trainer took off to another city without finishing the hours I had left with her.

I've had extremely poor posture since I was a kid. I've considered going to a doctor but can't figure out what kind of specialist to see.

I love it when other people tell me how I feel.

It's all in "the core" as far as I can tell.  I've been an on-again-off-again gym-goer for the last 5 or so years.  As I get out of shape, my posture worsens. Once I get back to the gym and start to strengthen my core, my posture kind of naturally starts to get better. Wife noticed it before I did actually.

Honestly?  Yoga, even just basic stretching and positions.  As daverzzz says, it's all about the core.  Get a DVD, do an hour a few times a week, and you'll find your shoulders pulling back and your back being more straight.

A chiropractor may help.

You could also try the "superman", planks, side planks, and squatting with your back against the wall.
