Hey, you want to know about this really cool new game? You build up people's hopes just so you can smash their dreams!  Hilarious, right?!

I have to do this calculation in my head every couple of months when a friend comes to me with a kickstarter for their film project, or art book about coats, or whatever.  Take X amount of money raised over Y the number of days passed so far, times Z the number of days left.  If the result is less than 50% of the goal, I bid a nice high number, to make myself seem like an awesome friend.  Otherwise, I give them $20.

Guilt kickstarters essentially have you betting against the projects.

Ill stick to funding products I would like to see produced.

That magnetic wargame board is something I actually want to see done properly, so... no.

/most KS stuff I've backed have been for friends

No, there isn't. Some hack Buzzfeed writer saying something is a thing doesn't make it a thing.

Your generous donation pushes the project past the 50% mark, and the project secures its funding before the due date, thus making you a 'real' awesome friend.

That's not funny, that's just being a dick.

I'm as sentimental as you can get, but come on:  if you're claiming you need 5 MEEEELLLLLIOOOONN dollars to film your indie art project called "Unbelievable", you might deserve to have your dreams smashed.

Jokes on them when some unwitting third backer stumbles on "$20" to go and finishes the goal.

Keep kickstarting that chicken?

Why? If you get that close whoever wants it funded could pay for the rest. The worst that could happen is a project that wasn't going to happen doesn't happen.

25$ out of 10,000$  left on my kickstarter with 1 hr to go?, i think i'll just make a little donation to my own project tyvm.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the whole point was to withdraw your pledge (well, actually, to get the other person to withdraw first, but still) and incidentally mock the project.

Granted, some projects somewhat deserve it...

that sounds pretty stupid.

How could it possibly cost $80K to develop it?

Yeah, looks like the point is to make the other person stop raising and not actually withdraw. If it happens then you have to pay.

I personally think its funny and a good constructive use of the game chicken

If you put it on TV it's like every reality show ever made.

I would do this to the Eternal Darkness "sequel" just to spite Denis Dyack, but it's not on Kickstarter so I have doubts I would get my money back.

I should do a Kickstarter project, then try to get people to play chicken on it.

they already have those anyway.  my friend has one he bought at gencon a couple years ago, its even flexible enough to roll into a tube for easy carrying.  they even make magnetic dry-erase boards that can work even better.

And now that every other KickStarter I see is a big studio or big star trying to get suckers to fund what they could easily fund themselves, I basically consider KickStarter to be over.

I don't want to have to do an hour of diligence to figure out if the campaign I'm funding is the CW trying to bilk me.

MindStalker: Games for rich people.

Well, we just consider it to be part of the one big game called "Flucking with poor people".  It has many facets.  Dashing the hopes of would be start ups is the only thing that makes us wake up before noon some days.

I threw in 50 bucks for the Wasteland 2 kickstarter. Had Brian Fargo behind it, so good chance for a win.

With all the drinkers on here, should start with Zane Lamprey's drinking show Kickstarter: Chug. (not affiliated, just a fan)
