Well you gotta admit, there can't be a lot of drag.

Despite having no legs and only one arm, Kayla Wheeler is a 16-year-old swimming phenomenon who continues to shatter world records.

I think it might be time for us to consider that maybe it's not despite having no legs and one arm, but perhaps because of that stuff I just said.

2013-05-08 11:49:54 PM
She's really fast a swimming laps, really small laps.

2013-05-08 11:57:18 PM
Her parents agonized for years, and finally decided NOT to change her name to Bob.

TFA did say that she didn't compete in the recent Paralympics because there were no other competitors in her category.

2013-05-09 12:52:14 AM
Is it possible she's actually a dolphin?

2013-05-09 12:52:58 AM
Does she just swim in circles?  Am I going to hell for that question?  Did I RTFA?  The answers are obvious.

Bob?

Let's all celebrate this woman by standing up and giving her a round of applause!

If you have enough record types, eventually everyone's a gold medalist.

We should measure in absolutes. I want one set of records, for all people, regardless of fittness or gender. It's the most egalitarian option. That should be one of the record sets.

2013-05-09 12:57:21 AM
Unfair advantage. Make her swim with the added weight of two legs and an arm and see if she's still breaking records then.

2013-05-09 12:59:39 AM
Yeah, she's swimming circles around the competition.

2013-05-09 01:00:07 AM
The only thing better than winning the special Olympics, is not competing in them.

Bigdogdaddy: Bigdogdaddy: I wonder if there's any evidence of drug dealing on those tapes?  Why would you not erase those if it showed you doing something that damn dumb?

Wrong thread.  *beats head against desk repeatedly*

Why didn't you just erase it?

Swimmers like Kayla are broken into different class levels based on how disabled they are. She qualified for the 2012 London Paralympic Games, but couldn't go because there weren't enough people to compete against.

"I didn't get to make the team because there were no female events for my classification, which is an S1. That's the most disabled you could be and still swim," Kayla said.

Congrats to her for overcoming adversity!  I think it's cool that she has beaten all the myriad Olympic swimming records set by every other woman in the world with exactly one arm and no other limbs.

/she can probably still bury me in wake, I'm a crap swimmer

2013-05-09 01:08:18 AM
I love living in a country where being born with one limb and three nubs is better than being born poor!

Well, it's not fair that she didn't get to compete.  A reasonable accommodation is to hack some limbs off a few other swimmers.

2013-05-09 01:10:39 AM
So, does she swim forward, or just waggle her arm and swim like a sperm?

2013-05-09 01:11:43 AM
Followup story in 5 years: She shoots her boyfriend who she thought was a home intruder.
/so sorry

40+ with a obnoxious BMI setting up a tailgate for over 100 - with kegs, tents and full buffet - with 45 minutes with a MASSIVE hangover starting at 6 AM.

I get that record for football tailgate set up time.

Those swim lessons obviously cost more than an arm and a leg.

2013-05-09 01:47:01 AM
She is the right size. All she has to do now is learn to play chess.

/if you understand, consider yourself educated. lol

2013-05-09 01:50:41 AM
She swam laps around her competition.

2013-05-09 02:08:16 AM
This is a remarkable accomplishment.  Let's give her a hand.

2013-05-09 02:12:16 AM
With only one limb, I'm not surprised she breaks things.

It figures. What they don't tell you is that she also has a chronic explosive gas condition.

Yes, but only because somebody else made the obvious joke an hour before he did.

Pfft. There's people your age at Penn State who used to do twice that at five to see the mighty lions play, back before the troubles.

Is she hot?

2013-05-09 05:59:41 AM
Well, I think she found the secret of whales, dolphins, and seals found, that legs suck for swimming

/got nothing snarky/witty to say, good for her

In the video it appears she has zero hands as well. (Actually I think she has a hand, just no fingers)

2013-05-09 08:56:34 AM
Jeez!
Why do people like her insist on making the rest of us look bad?!!
Can't you just accept the disability and sit on a couch and watch tv all day?!
------
Good on ya kid.

And good on her parents/caretakers for raising her right.

I'm sure she'll be a hit here on fark since she doesn't have sharp knees.

/sorry, couldn't resist
//pic with the dog shows her to be a fun person
///slash that water, huney.

Well now I really feel like a lazy fatass.

/But seriously, that girl is a badass

2013-05-09 10:27:48 AM
She's shattering Paralympic world records, not world records.
Paralympic times are also adjusted for severity of injury/disabled.
