It was the 6th grade graduation that was cancelled, so no biggie.

/Cue jokes about 6th grade being as far as kids get in Arkansas schools.

I can just imagine the reaction of (many) parents: "Those atheists ruined our graduation ceremony plans!"

Prayer in schools isn't shifting anywhere near as fast as the gay marriage issue.

It may still be an inter-generational issue.

Rather than hold 6th grade graduation

I stopped right there. You don't GRADUATE from 6th grade. This isn't a 3rd-world country where you go to school until you're twelve and then you're done.

O Marduk, who did join blood to bone and create the race of man, we would here remember Thy many names, but that there are women in the assembly who may never hear Thy secret names spoken. But we stand before you in gratitude for all you have done, for Thou art Prince of the Gods and Thy command is firm! Look now with favor upon these graduates, who stand before You at a full 11 years of age, ready to become Thy soldiers in the war against Tiamat in this world and the next.

It's a thing now. Many places junior high is a separate school. And some kids are separated from their friends.

"As Christians and a mainly Christian town I think, there were a lot of people hurt that our rights were taken away," Adams said.

It takes a lot of hard work to fail at both the Constitution and the Bible at the same time.

"A lot of the parents, the Christian parents decided to get together and do it at the church," she said. Adams said some of the parents are meeting Thursday to discuss which church will host the ceremony and to re-plan graduation.

Perfect.  Public schools shouldn't waste money on graduation ceremonies.

Doglover Fact #162

My kindergarten graduation ceremony was the only graduation ceremony I ever actually had to sit through as a student. The high school and college ceremonies were both trumped by more important issues.

International travel. Instead of going to a ceremony 100 miles away from my house in middle of PA winter to pay $100+ round trip for gas and parking to sit through two or more hours of a ceremony where no one I ever had a class with was graduating and no one in my family could attend and I'd have had to rent a gown and buy a cap myself from the overpriced uniform store, I took a plane to go find a job.

Although day of I drank a good bottle of wine and ate way too much roast meat.

What I don't get is that up here in the northeast US, the supposed bastion of all things liberal, they have little invocations and recessionals at graduation ceremonies and nobody blinks even twice.

Of course, they're generally vagueish and inter-faith and more like, "God is awesome, we're awesome, thanks, good luck kids!" and less, "Bless jesus whom without you'll all be devils, go forth and spread the good word."

Uh, no. I never really went to official high school events. My high school was godawful. So, after finals, sitting on acceptence letters and two semestrs' college credit, I stopped going.

Dear high school administrators: if you want to engender students' school spirit, DO NOT require them to take a semester of community college classes concurrent with their normal high school classes because your office paperwork error knocked them out of the advanced curriculum. And when they complete this insane task your asinine policy foists upon them, don't fark with their schedule even more on their senior year based off of your original mistake after they just spent $2000 and got straight As in that stuff in a college 200 level course. Okay? We straight here? KTNXBAI

That's a much better reason to be bitter than mine, which was just a general disgust for the majority of the students and teachers there.
