I would like to have ribs with this dude. He seems like a pretty cool guy to have over at a barbecue.

It's awesome to see someone react like this to fame. He's outspoken and humble at the same time.

And people are already climbing out of the woodwork to proclaim that he has been brought up on battery charges. As if what he did in the past lessens what he did today.

Not just saving the girls but shrugging off a potential $25,000 reward because he was doing the right thing? This guy deserves a HELL of a 'thank you' party.

Good for him, though I'm sure others will make up for it later anyway for him. Don't forget these girls will likely not only end up with their own paychecks from donations and eventual book and film rights, etc. Not being cynical, just looking at the likely outcome.

I'm sure there will also be another payday once the police settle with them for a decade of not properly checking out regular 911 calls where the girls were spotted naked in the backyard, screams from the house, etc.

The guy is awesome. I completely agree with your assessment.

Unless his interview was scripted (in which case fire up the tin-foil-hat schizophrenia machine), it wasn't racist. Liking it is not racist. Seriously, what in the world would make someone think that? It was one heroic dude giving an interview in his own, enthusiastic style. References to BBQ and McDonalds were made. Whatever.

In any case, I'm a liberal. And I question the liberality of whoever posted on your feed, because what you describe doesn't sound progressive. It sounds... well, hypersensitive yet stupid.

While agreeing with you for the most part, I doubt that this particular situation is one that Ramsey has ever perpetrated. There's a pretty big gap between punching or hitting someone and locking them up in your house for a decade-plus.

We don't even know if that really ever happened. We don't know the details of the situation. When my ex-wife and i went through a divorce and custody battle, she said she was gonna have her new boy friend and his homeboys kick my ass when I went to pick up my kids for visitation. I asked the cops to go with me, and they did. She threatened them, and almost arrested her at the time. We had court that monday, and she went there with bruises all along her back and said I beat her up when i came to pick the kids up. The douche attorney for Santa Clara County treated me like a piece of shiat on her word. When I gave him the police badge numbers of the cops who watched the whole thing, he still treated me like a douche. When they told him what happened he shut his pie hole, but never apologized. My ex was a meth addict, and I got custody of my kids. It's easy to make accusations against someone, and cops will always be on the safe side, and go with the woman. Women are also good liars though. It's very douchebag for smokinggun.com to go after this guy after what he did, and try to tear him down. Doesn't look like they gave him a chance to defend himself, and he shouldn't have too. Do a good deed, and have douchebags try to tear you down.

He also is a serial domestic abuser.

I'm as North as North can get (not physically, socially) and fried chicken and watermelon were staples every summer picnic.

That, and one evening my mom's Pyrex dish shattered while cooking up some ribs in the oven; to talk ourselves out of being idiots, my dad and I actually had to discuss the risks of small bits of glass (pyrex) that might be in the food.

Yeah, Amanda Berry on the phone with 911, the audio of that is available on any news site. Listen to Charles Ramsay's 911 call too, where he says she is on the phone with 911 too.

Also, Charles Ramsay himself said he saw someone run over there to the house which is what led him to go see what was going on. He also says he kicked the door to get her out, which the real guy who was there first says is bullshiat.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Here's a link to the story that basically says if you smiled during the Ramsey video, you're racist:

http://mobile.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2013/05/07/charles_ramsey_aman d a_berry_rescuer_becomes_internet_meme_video.html

"It's difficult to watch these videos and not sense that their popularity has something to do with a persistent, if unconscious, desire to see black people perform."

"plays into the most basic stereotyping of blacks as simple-minded ramblers living in the "ghetto," socially out of step with the rest of educated America."

Honestly, (and I can't believe I get to play this card), the writer of that article is the REAL racist for focusing exclusively on viral videos of black folks (also, the lack of Bubb Rubb is a flagrant omission in that regard). How about the crazy "smash, SUH-MASH" hatchet hitchiker dude, or the "What does it mean?!??" hippie rainbow guy, or "they don't have maps/like such as the Iraq" beauty pageant girl? Viral videos go viral because we appreciate people who are characters, not because we wanna bring back minstrelsy and demand a little soft-shoe from anybody with brown skin.

Well the guy who was there first, who Charles said he saw over there which is why he went to help, said Charles didn't do anything and is lying. It sounds like Charles probably heard a commotion and went over to see what was happening, and he did call 911, but he isn't the sole person who rescued the girls and saved them which is what he was made out to be.

I'm not sure why you are mad at the smoking gun, they are just reporting facts. The facts are that Charles Ramsay doesn't pay child support and has been arrested multiple times over multiple years for domestic violence.

I have a lot of respect for you too, of course, but we disagree here on what is relevant (smoking gun) and if CR is a hero (I say probably not). What we can both agree on is that CR is a hilarious meme its a good thing those women are safe now.

It's really easy to do the right thing when it's clear there is a good course of action and you're not emotionally involved messing up your decision process.

Still, some people are "bad" and won't do the right thing when it's easy. Thus, this guy is still okay despite a checkered past. Hero for being human? Nawww... but he's okay. You can always add another hero. This isn't "Highlander" where there can only be one. Ramsey is a hero. Berry is a hero. If there is another, let it be told

Agreed. Though it would be way cooler if one of the heroes happen to dress like Connor Macleod.

EVERETT and JONES in Berkeley and awesome is awesome.great. great BBQ

Will have to try that next time I'm there. Usually when i was in the area would go for soul food for lunch. There was a great place on telegraph, but can't remember the name, but it was in Berkeley. Maybe the same place? It's been years. When i was working nights i would go to Daves Coffee Shop on Broadway in Oakland. Best cup of coffee and breakfast plate in the Bay Area.

Bay Area BBQ you need to go to Old Oakland Road in San Jose, and try Jon Jon's. I live in Austin, and that's almost as good as the BBQ I've had here, or in Lockhart. Oakland BBQ isn't that good, but maybe i went to the wrong places. San Francisco BBQ will probably be zucchini.

Sure, and if Ramsay was really there and did what he said, then he helped out. The guy who was there first says Ramsay is full of shiat. Right now its just the two of their words so take whichever side you want. The fact that Ramsay admits he wasn't there first, and the guy who was there first says Ramsay is full of shiat, plus the evidence (I know you dont agree with) that Ramsay is a piece of shiat, leads me to believe he isn't a hero at all and played himself up to the media.

I mean just look at his different interviews, he contradicts himself a lot. My two cents, if for some reason Amanda Berry ever gives a flying fark at all to say if Ramsay was a hero or not, will be the only way we ever know for sure.

"Ramsey arrived after she was outside with the girl," Cordero told the reporter in Spanish.

Then:

Cordero said he and other neighbors helped Ramsey break down the door of the Seymore Ave. home.

robohobo: There's an article up on Yahoo right now about how everyone's a racist for being amused by Ramsey's interview vids.

Good Lord, the need to manufacture news out of and dissect everything.
From the link: "Amid the hood backdrop - the gnarled teeth, the dirty white tee, the slang, the shout-out to McDonald's - we miss the fact that Charles Ramsey is perfectly lucid and intelligent."

To the self-important writer: Speak for yourself. Why the "we"? Who told you I missed that? Because I didn't. What might be more important is that you just assumed that I did, in your never-ending quest to see racism everywhere around you and to make sure that it shows up where it was not before.

I taught inner-city kids and many (not all) of them knew exactly how to speak and write correct, standard English, and usually did with me and often with each other. Many times when they used ebonics, it was strategic and intended to be funny, and they knew how funny it was. One of our smartest eighth-graders would routinely and hilariously tattle on a good friend to me within his earshot and one of these times, her eyes wide with fake outrage, she pointed at him and shouted, "Him CURSE!" It had everybody in stitches. Much of Ramsey's storytelling is clearly intended to be humorous and light. But I guess nobody's laughing with him, because racism and we simply all must be laughing at him. The fact that 1) he was funny, and 2) we laughed just CAN'T cover it all. There must be something deeper, and it must strike at the very heart of American society and produce many page-views.

You'll love Jon Jon's. They used to cook all their food on top of 55 gallon drums, and were originally ran by a church for donations. You would see cars lined up at noon waiting for that goodness, after seeing him cooking on those drums in the morning on the way to work. Later the cook just made it a business for himself, and the food quality stayed the same if not better. Don't know what happened to his relationship with his church. Maybe it's the same? Don't know. All I know is as an Austinite I'm exposed to excellent BBQ, and Jon Jon's in San Jose is pretty damn good. I haven't seen anything else even close in the rest of the Bay Area. If you are working in Santa Clara, you aren't terribly far, but they do sell out, and close when they do. Best pre-order.

Uchiha_Cycliste: So, it's the cook and the recipes that matter right? Well. what if the cook is from one of those places?

I knew plenty of 'cooks' from those places that couldn't BBQ to save their lives. They didn't even know how to run a 200+ rack pit (my primary job besides pull prep and catering.)

I've had plenty of recipes that failed for BBQ, despite excellent skills on the part of the cook.

What most of you consider BBQ isn't even close to true BBQ in the first place. If there ain't a big smoking pit on-site, you're not getting anything close to the real deal. That sauce? Sorry, real BBQ doesn't need sauce, it's naturally juicy due to how it's prepared. A dry rub is all you need, and if you got something really juicy, it becomes a muddy rub as you put it on. Wet rubs are not rubs at all, they're bastes, and anyone calling it a rub should be knocked upside the head. Rubs are dry spice rubs in the world of BBQ, period.

Real BBQ = A real rotary rack inside a wood-fired pit, 48+ hours of nonstop smoking/cooking time at low temps, dry spices, no sauces, and if you dare baste your ribs with anything, it better be fruit-based from a fruit that bears seeds on the inside (in other words, if there's a hint of corn sugar or syrup GTFO.)

khyberkitsune: Uchiha_Cycliste: So, it's the cook and the recipes that matter right? Well. what if the cook is from one of those places?

Well, I'm pronuncing that Everett and Jones is THE shiat! They have a masive inside fire pit/oven I guess a hearth. And they cook the food (deeoer in) and it stay in there, They open it up and cut you off a big chunk of whatever then serve it to you with a slice of the cheapest white bread they can find.

Seriously.

You Yankee Cretins don't know what you're missing with a good rack of ribs. Make sure they're wet and messy, like your mom last night.

I assure you, the bay area and the east bay in particular has some awesome ribs and BBQ joints

If it ain't Memphis, St. Louis, or Austin BBQ, it ain't shiat.

/worked plenty of BBQ shacks nationwide

Love this statement. I'm spoiled with Austin BBQ, but KC and others get things done so right as well. Some of the best ribs i had were in Chicago, of all places. It doesn't feel real though now unless it wax paper.

This guy did a great thing.  However, from what I read in a different story, he never paid child support.  If that's the case and he had a judgement against him, his wife could lay claim to the reward money.  It might get interesting.  It still doesn't take away from what he did.  Good on him.

That's how we do it in Memphis. When a customer orders a pulled pork sandwich, one part of my job is to get into that 180 degree pit and hand-pick that meat right off the shoulder. You even get to watch me do it, as I probe shoulders, slide my gloved hand in and with zero effort slip out the entire shoulder bone, give you the thumbs up and grab a huge chunk of meat, and drop it into the hands of the waiting sandwich maker.

Reward money and settlement money are essentially judgement-proof, because they don't count as taxable income.

I think there are two states where this has been tested and failed, at state level. Texas, and California.

What I meant to say is that this money being judgement-proof didn't hold in these two states. I know it's held in TN, I saw too many court battles go that way, where some deadbeat doesn't pay child support, but gets hit by a car and gets a HUGE settlement, but that's not taxable income so it can't be held for child support, especially since this money is to repair damages done to him, not to the poor baby mama.

Sounds like it should be. Every good BBQ is served with white bread. In Texas in good BBQ places, you don't get plates. You get served on wax paper. You can grab plastic utensils, but they aren't given to you. You grab them yourselves. Now this is the part of the reason that i don't know is true or not. People say, if you give silver ware or real plates, a whole new tax code comes in place for the restaurant. So most avoid it. Wax paper and plastic sporks go by those rules. White bread is used like tortillas eating Mexican food. Texans love BBQ and Mexican food. Main difference i've noticed between Texas and California with Mexican food is they like flour tortillas in TX, and corn tortillas in CA. I prefer corn tortillas myself.  Just how I was raised. As far as I know, California doesn't tax different whether on plates or not.

Leon's was the place. But Leon has gone to the big BBQ in the sky.

If he turned it down to spite his ex's and children, then not good on him.  If he is given a chance to repair the damage he has caused his own family and refuses it out of spite, how could that be good?  Now if the money would just be for himself, then fine good on him for giving it over to those girls.  I am sure many other people will be taking care of these girls for the next couple years.  Life will get tough for them again in a few years when no one remembers their story and they have to join the rest of us in normal life, which right now they are not prepared for.

There's a story behind every case of back child support owed.  That story is not reflected in the public record, so we don't know the circumstances.  The guy works as a dishwasher, I doubt he makes more than $8 an hour or so.  It's very likely that his wages get garnished in line with Ohio law and it's just not enough to ever pay it.  Eventually he will, it's not the kind of thing you can just NOT pay and the statute of limitations runs out.  A year or two ago my wife got a check for back child support owed decades ago.  Sooner or later, it gets paid.

o_O

I'm as North as North can get (not physically, socially) and fried chicken and watermelon were staples every summer picnic.

That, and one evening my mom's Pyrex dish shattered while cooking up some ribs in the oven; to talk ourselves out of being idiots, my dad and I actually had to discuss the risks of small bits of glass (pyrex) that might be in the food.

/they looked daaaamned good
//had a sad that evening

THIS....ribs, fried chicken and watermelon. Who DOESN'T like 'em?

However way back in college, we looked out my dorm room window and it seemed that every black person (and only black people) in the city had gathered in the lawn/basketball courts for something.  My slightly racist friend said "What, are they giving away free fried chicken and watermelon or something?" We kinda awkwardly giggled at the off color comment and then decided we were gonna head downtown.

We walked out the side where the gathering was taking place...where we saw it.  A sign that said "FREE FRIED CHICKEN AND WATERMELON"

So I think they may just like it more than us white folk?

You want catfish, you haul your butt down into Mississippi for the Mississippi Catfish Company.

Where'd you go for the ribs? I'll tell you right now most places on Beale Street SUCK for BBQ.

So I discovered. Planning a to give it another shot later this year, so feel free to point me in the right direction.
But first, New Orleans for Creole and Lafayette for Cajun!

tlchwi02: Gyrfalcon: Ten years ago. I'd say he's paid his dues and then some today.

I agree- he ran to help a woman in a situation that a decade ago he might have been the one perpetrating. not only do I have no problem with him keeping the hero tag, but the fact he could change from a perpetrator to someone willing to step in and stop it almost speaks more for him.

That and it lends credence to his claim that, had he known earlier what was going on, he'd be facing three counts of murder.

Kahabut: It's terribly sad that you are surrounded with such pathetic examples of humanity that you think that is a heroic act.

Alright, let's assume that my living in a society of cowardly shiatheads has affected my judgement and I am therefore possessed of exceptionally low moral standards.

The only proper question, then, would be this: what would you call a heroic act? Saving a dame in distress from long and torturous imprisonment? Killing and eventually dying for your country while it's bringing peace and democracy to [insert oil-rich and/or communist country here]? Saving the world?
Because the first heroic deed is functionally identical to what Ramsey did, the second one is barely a good deed if you look at the net consequences of participating in a war, and very few people ever get an opportunity to accomplish the third one.

Ivo Shandor: banandar123: Give this guy free McDonalds for life...At the very least. Come one, now. Just for being so awesome.

It sounds like they're going to do something for him.

Maybe he can be their new mascot...Travel around the country promoting the place, commercials, etc. Not that McDonalds really needs to get its name out there, but still would be cool to see.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Anyone else see some of the "if you like Charles Ramsey, you're racist" super liberal bullshiat that's started?

Most likely situation: You're an idiot, and are misunderstanding people who are saying that people who make fun of Ramsey's voice, speech patterns, appearance etc. are most likely racist as fark.
