...so they don't give off any smell at all?

/That smell is actually tert-Butylthiol and Tetrahydrothiophene.

"Well Bob, seems those scratch-n-sniff cards DO work"

Double facepalm for the manufacturers and distributors, good job for the people who recognized the smell and its possible implications

CSB: About 40 years ago a local company sent out smell sample cards, only they weren't scratch&sniff. They had some aromatic blob of stuff in the envelope. Took a couple of weeks before the false alarms started to die down.

I can't tell you how many times I've been glad that type of regulation exists.

Damn grill has floaty knobs, man!  Now, I've taken to just closing the tank underneath every time.

No. The odorant is b-mercaptoethanol. Also a darn handy reducing reagent in molecular biology pursuits.

They obviously worked quite well, so why toss them out merely because they're "expired"?

My guess is that contact numbers/names/etc. have changed.

Energy West general manager Nick Bohr said that workers recently discarded several boxes of expired scratch-and-sniff cards in Great Falls.

First, the scratch-and-sniff cards had an expiration date??  Second, the gas company knew how many to order for it's customers, how did it end up with so many extra?  Who got the bid from their buddy's company accepted for handling this obviously padded contract to make the cards?  This whole thing stinks.
