I hadn't been paying any attention to this case, didn't know anything about it, until the other day when I saw some news headline about testimony regarding kinky sex at the trial. So of course I clicked on it, and it turns out that "kinky" means oral, a little buttsexing, phone sex, and role playing.

Some people have a COMPLETELY different view of "kinky" than I do.

But then I read the folks involved were Mormon, and it made a bit more sense.

She made Fark primarily because nude pics of her turned up online. Also, she drove over 2000 miles round-trip to kill her ex-boyfriend "in self defense" which made it a little more than a local story.

I've seen baseball articles more deserving of the newsflash tag. The media has gone beyond the pale with this one. They've been obsessing over this case, but no one gives a shiat. I've literally heard no one in real life talk about this. I don't think there's ever been a greater disparity between the amount of media coverage something has gotten compared to the amount of care the public has given it.

As near as I can tell (I haven't really been following either), it seems like a pretty open-and-shut case: dude gets shot in shower; ex-girlfriend denies she was there;  then ex-girlfriend admits she was there, but says it was an intruder; then the bullet found at the scene turns out to be same caliber as the gun stolen from ex-girlfriend's grandparents' house a couple of days earlier; then ex-girlfriend admits she shot him, but says it was self-defense.  Doesn't seem like it should take the jury too long to deliberate about that one.

Well, I suppose if you don't care about the brutal slaughter of a young man of promise (albeit the promise to be somewhat like Mitt Romney when he grew up), then no, you wouldn't care.

If, however, you appreciate the occasional triumph of justice in a world that seems completely devoid of it at times, then you would care.

If you are the kind of person who would "stick your dick in crazy," you might want to know what the possible consequences might be of such rash behavior: stabbed in the back, head, and chest 29 times, throat slit so deep you were almost decapitated, then the final coup de grâce of being shot in the forehead, and then have your butchered body left naked in the shower for five days in the Arizona summer heat...maybe it could teach you a life lesson.

it doesn't really seem to matter much to anyone outside of whatever geographic area this is occurring.

can someone explain it in a nutshell?

and why is this a newsflash then?

nothing remarkable about anything that I just read, basic run-of-the-mill murder.

maybe it's because I don't have cable and that's why I'm not seeing it supposedly on every news channel.

seems more like a local-interest story, not national headlines

She made Fark primarily because nude pics of her turned up online. Also, she drove over 2000 miles round-trip to kill her ex-boyfriend "in self defense" which made it a little more than a local story.

Ah Jodi - the ol' self-defense-I-wuz-abbuusseed shiat didn't fly?  Ya don't say.

This case was fascinating for many reasons:

1.)  The crazy biatch had pictures she inadvertently took while killing him. (She tried trashing the camera in the washing machine.  Digital cameras, FTW!)  Seriously creepy to see a picture of Alexander posing in the shower, and, like three minutes later, she's dragging his bloody body across the floor.  These were taken several hours after they took nekkid pics of each other after sex.  So she bones the guy, packs her shiat to leave, and kills him while he's cleansing her stank off him.
2.)  First, it was ninjas/people dressed in black.  Then, she fessed up that she killed him in self defense - 29 stab wounds, slit his throat, and shot him in the head.  But it was self defense!
3.)  She rents a car, carts several gas cans to AZ with her, changes her hair color before going, shuts off her cell phone, and mucks up the license plates before showing up to his place....but it wasnt anything she 'planned.'
4.)  biatch can remember what she ordered from starbucks...but killing him is all 'foggy.'
5.)  She spent the longest time on stand of any murder defendant in history - and believe me - it was an exercise in crazy lying.
6.)  I don't even wanna know what they did with the pop rocks and tootsie pops, but I'm guessing she had the worst yeast infection in the history of EVER!
7.)  She claimed he broke her finger and she caught him crusing kiddie porn...but there was no record of it on his computer and she never came up with any evidence of medical treatment for said finger (she said Travis bandaged it.)

biatch is weapons-grade crazy.  Glad she's gonna fry.  Can't wait to hear what she says when she makes her jury statement.

Yes, there's lots more important things in the world, however, no, unfortunately it's not over. She's guilty of premeditated murder, but starting tomorrow is the "aggravating factors" phase, which is where her death or life will be decided by the same jury, so this is going to go on for a while longer.

I only know this name from greenlit Fark headlines and have never bothered to really click any of the stories.

it doesn't really seem to matter much to anyone outside of whatever geographic area this is occurring.

can someone explain it in a nutshell?

As near as I can tell (I haven't really been following either), it seems like a pretty open-and-shut case: dude gets shot in shower; ex-girlfriend denies she was there;  then ex-girlfriend admits she was there, but says it was an intruder; then the bullet found at the scene turns out to be same caliber as the gun stolen from ex-girlfriend's grandparents' house a couple of days earlier; then ex-girlfriend admits she shot him, but says it was self-defense.  Doesn't seem like it should take the jury too long to deliberate about that one.

He wasn't just shot.  He was stabbed multiple times (27-29), throat slashed open, and shot, and the evidence suggested the gunshot was last.   He also had defensive wounds on his hands.
After changing her story multiple times the defense she finally tried claiming was that she was a domestic abuse victim (the defense expert on this was on the stand for three damn weeks for no good reason) and it was justifiable self-defense.

Jodi Arias is a murdering psychopath, though I would like to say that the bolded parts aren't actually inconsistent with the proposition that she as an abused woman who killed in self-defense. No, I'm not saying she was an abused woman who killed in self-defense. I am saying that:

1) An abused woman who killed in self-defense might be overtaken with emotion at the time of the killing, and unleash her pent up frustration and anger on her abuser's body.

2) Even an abused woman with a terrific memory who killed in self-defense might suppress the memory of the killing, which would surely have been a traumatic experience for her.

Can't wait to hear what she says when she makes her jury statement.

how do you inadvertently take pictures?

My guess is that she had the camera on a wrist strap, and, while she was getting stabby, she hit the button on the camera.  I think she tried deleting them before she ran them through the washing machine, but AZ computer forensics guys were able to retrieve the data.

I think if you overwrite it enough times with the random garbate, that works, or at least will stop anyone short of the NSA. DBAN is a popular tool for that. Total destruction of the drive platters will work for sure (thermite is what the military uses for that purpose).

Not ONE of his ex GF's testified to anything regarding a past history of abusive behavior from Alexander.  Now, while I don't think the guy walked on water - he certainly had no history of physically abusive behavior.  Also...hard to understand how he got so many knife wounds on his back, plus the whole practically decapitated part if she was 'deathly afraid' of him/he was menacing her?  Also - why even make up a story of the black-clad intruders:  If it was self defense, why bother calling his phone and leaving him voicemails after she knew she'd just left him lumped in his shower?  Why try to cover her tracks so well and feign ignorance?

2) Even an abused woman with a terrific memory who killed in self-defense might suppress the memory of the killing, which would surely have been a traumatic experience for her.

I'm sure it was very traumatic for her:  She had a shiatton of lying to do, and she killed in a state with a death penalty.  I'm sure that would fog up her memory moreso than any 'trauma' from her made up abuse.  I think it was far more traumatic for her that he thought of her as a fark buddy and wasn't going to change his mind and take her to Cancun - and that he didn't appreciate her recording phone sex to use against him.  If anything, given what we know about the case - it seems more thaat Alexander was a DA victim at her deeds and actions prior to the murder.

She did too many things before the visit to suggest she had something in mind - and I think self defense was the only card she could remotely play in hopes for getting that one juror.  Thankfully, she was a HORRIBLE liar and couldn't make up a remotely convincing story.  But how DARE she claim 'domestic abuse' in light of how many people actually suffer through it every day.

I couldn't avoid watching a bit about this trial the other week, and during the show they did a man on the street interview that perfectly summed up everything wrong with celebrity trials, criminal justice, and our culture as a whole. The reporter goes out to the line to ask some people how long they've been waiting to get inside the courtroom, chats with a few people, and then this woman says "I record this every day. I never miss an episode!"

You never miss... an episode? For fark's sake, America, get it together.

The Dog Ate My Homework: I still don't understand how this became a national story. It's just one of countless murder trials that go on all the time literally everywhere around the country.

My guess is the '48 hours' interviews they did with her during the 'ninjas broke in and killed Travis and I escaped when the gun misfired' portion of her story a month or so after the killing put it in the national spotlight.  then, the follow ups when it turned to 'oh nos - self defense'.  Plus, the circumstances are seriously effed up:  The guy was dead for 4 or 5 days in his shower, had roommates who apparently were in the house during the time he was dead, (the shower/his bedroom suite was on the second floor - how they didn't begin to notice a smell was beyond me.) and the coont who murdered him was sending him emails/vmails after she knew she'd killed him.  Oh, and she tried to bone a prospective new BF the day after she offed Travis.   A recorded phone sex session and the nekkid pics also helped ramp up the publicity.

There was also some weirdness with her initially wanting to represent herself, but screwing that up royally where the court pretty much said you have to have some public defenders.

You don't have to physically destroy the hard drive. There is software which will render hard drive data utterly unrecoverable. You can wipe the HDD with random data multiple times. DOD security standards say a drive is rendered safe with something like 7 passes, but there is free software which will overwrite 35 times or more.

You can also literally overwrite every bit on the drive with all 0's. I have a weird little server I use at home which actually requires a HDD being added to the RAID array to be wiped to all 0's like that before installing. I got some piece of software that did that when I set the server up. Takes a while, but it works. Then there's also nothing left to recover.

When you delete data from a HDD, the drive usually still has the file on it until overwritten, but the headers which tell the drive how to find that particular data again have been deleted. Forensic guys are generally using software which scans the drive and picks the files out of the "unreadable" spaces on the drive, and they can probably get some information from partially overwritten files too of the right types.

But once you actually overwrite the entire disk (and keep in mind, even when the disc is filled to capacity according to your OS there's still redundant space left which may contain files or fragments of files which have been deleted), or just the "empty" space which contains the files you've deleted, then there's nothing to recover. Thing is - no one really ever does that. It's often not practical as they're being nabbed before they have a chance to do a proper scrub, or they just don't know how (which most people do not), or they don't think the cops will find the hardware, or etc....

Pretty sure the camera didn't have a rotating magnet platter kind of storage

But assuming it did have 32MB of Flash memory built in, I'd suggest the following procedure to securely erase the built-in picture store.

1) delete all the pictures
2) set camera to lowest resolution,
3) change the date in the camera to sometime in the past
4) Take 32MB of pictures of the ceiling.
5) delete all the ceiling pictures
6) set camera to highest resolution
7) take 32MB of my cat doing something cute
8) set the date to real date
9) put camera in closet

It's often not practical as they're being nabbed before they have a chance ...

When I was afraid of sex when I was just a lass
My Mormon boyfriend tied me up and farked me in the ass.
Then one day I learned a way to save my aching bum,
The surest way and I must say that this is how it's done.

Stab stab stab stab, stab stab stab stab, stab stab and slice.
Stab stab stab stab, stab stab stab, that wasn't very nice.
Stab stab stab stab, stab stab stab. I wonder if he's dead?
Stab stab stab stab, stab stab stab and gun shot to his head.

[to Martinez]

Arias: You want answers?

Martinez: I think I'm entitled to.

Arias: *You want answers?*

Martinez: *I want the truth!*

Arias: *You can't handle the truth!*

[pauses]

Arias: Son, we live in a world that has pussies, and those pussies have to be guarded by women with hair. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Alexander, and you curse the French. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Alexander's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my coont, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want hair on that pussy, you need hair on that pussy. We use words like muff, carpet, matching drapes. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very furburger that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a comb, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Martinez: Did you order the Code Hirsute?

Arias: I did the job I...

Yeah - because a woman who documents, via pics and a diary, every mundane aspect of her life, except the ones where a dood roughs her up or breaks her finger, has clearly suffered much at the hands of this monster she put down.  ( a dood with no history of aggression by anyone who knew him.  In fact, in spite of a pretty hideous childhood.)

Seems like the closest thing she had to any 'evidence' of injury was that broken finger...which wasn't healed properly:  if I were one of her attorneys, an x ray of said finger would have been front and center of my defense.

The only shot she had was to demonize the dead guy and make up shiat that nothing about his character or history suggested was in his personality, or was there remote evidence of.

Nice trolling - I'll give you an 8 out of 10.

BeatrixK: Not ONE of his ex GF's testified to anything regarding a past history of abusive behavior from Alexander.

I don't believe he abused her. All I'm saying is your logic on the particular point that the violence done to the body disproves the story of abuse is faulty. There's plausible reason why the victim of longstanding abuse would do violence to a body. Hence, your inference from the violence done to the body to the absence of self-defense is a weak one.

BeatrixK: I'm sure it was very traumatic for her:

Once again, you have missed my point. I don't think Jodi Arias's memory is foggy at all. My point is only that someone who killed in self-defense, especially after years of abuse, could very plausibly suppress the memory of the killing. Hence, the inference from her foggy memory to a guilty mind is a weak one.

You listed out this series of propositions which you felt undermined her self-defense story. I took issue with your logic on two of them. I agree with your ultimate conclusions though. I'm like a math teacher grading you down because your work was bad, even if your final answer was right. Kind of dickish, maybe, but I was really just making conversation.

Baz744: BeatrixK: Ah Jodi - the ol' self-defense-I-wuz-abbuusseed shiat didn't fly?

While PTSD symptoms could be cited in forgetting the incident, she had no symptoms in regard the the other multiple times she was "attacked and beaten." She didn't forget shiat

everytime we let some woman who OBVIOUSLY is not abused to that extent use that excuse, the more it takes away from a woman who actually has that happen.

If she had gone there in cold blood, just driven there, none of this rental car, hair dye crap, stuck a knife in him and was done with it she'd be free tonight using the "I was battered excuse." With all the intent and pre-meditation in the world.

Agreed.  I don't get how people express outrage at crimes like these (whether the criminal is male or female) and then express glee at the thought of the criminal being raped.  It seems to me that if you can cheer at the idea of a person being raped, you're not much better than the criminal.

I hope you're joking...

No, I'm serious.  I'd think "rape" falls under cruel and unusual punishment. Are you really in favor of it?

I have no sympathy for this woman, or for anyone who commits crimes like this.  I'm not in favor of state-ordained rape.  Call me odd.

mongbiohazard: CynicalLA: BeatrixK: My guess is that she had the camera on a wrist strap, and, while she was getting stabby, she hit the button on the camera.  I think she tried deleting them before she ran them through the washing machine, but AZ computer forensics guys were able to retrieve the data.

Is there anyway to destroy a hard drive so forensics guys can't retrieve the data?  It seems like they are always able to get something.

You don't have to physically destroy the hard drive. There is software which will render hard drive data utterly unrecoverable. You can wipe the HDD with random data multiple times. DOD security standards say a drive is rendered safe with something like 7 passes, but there is free software which will overwrite 35 times or more.

Overwriting the disk is OK for DOD so long as the disk is going to be reused within DOD confines and the material on the disk was no greater than classified.  For a disk that is being removed from service or that contained secret or above data, the disk has to be physically destroyed and rendered unreadable.

Jodi is so certifiably psycho and her behaviors and actions so calculated, that it makes me wonder who else she's offed, and gotten away with it?

You forget that the "expert" is paid to say such things. They charge nauseating amounts per hour to testify on someone's behalf. If I were any expert at this circus trial, I'd charge triple just for the headache of it.

Dion Fortune: I'm telling ya, her conviction just shows all the misogyny and patriotism in the world.  It shows how society does not take domestic violence seriously.  Arias said she was abused, why would she lie?  Why do we question women's voices?  If a MAN stabbed his ex-girlfriend dozens of times in the shower and shot her then everyone would just be asking, "what did she do to make him mad?"  Men get away with everything in the patriarchical society and women get no sympathy.

Um. No.

/she will get the punishment that she deserves though.

The term rape culture makes me want to pilage through the amazon stealing cultural artifacts. I hate this is being called "culture" which gives the idea that there is some backroom where all the guys get together and speak the unwritten rule that rape is okay, just a wink and a nod and we all know. Or that if you make a joke about rape you suddenly think it's okay, or condone it.

Just because some people in that highschool in Steubenville thought it'd be better to help cover up and avert a scandal, doesn't mean that's the way most people feel. You will never end rape, just like you'll never end robbery, violence, or drug abuse. So we can deal with real situations that arise with the seriousness needed, improve on things that need to be improved, and crack jokes about things we fear. Or we can pretend that if we don't ever do anything but say how wrong it is, aggressivley educate the youth on how wrong it is, and how we as a society won't tollerate it that it'll suddenly go away, I'm going to go ahead and call that "non-rape culture."

Gdalescrboz: While PTSD symptoms could be cited in forgetting the incident, she had no symptoms in regard the the other multiple times she was "attacked and beaten." She didn't forget shiat

If you'll reread my post, you'll see I didn't say she did. Like you, I disbelieve her testimony because of a lot of other factors. But as a general principle, the argument "She claims a foggy memory of one incident, yet she remembered another wholly unrelated, non-traumatic incident, therefore her claim to a foggy memory is false" is a very weak inference at best. That's all I took issue with in OP's post.

pedobearapproved: everytime we let some woman who OBVIOUSLY is not abused to that extent use that excuse, the more it takes away from a woman who actually has that happen.

It's pretty clear the jury didn't let her get away with that excuse. Neither did I say she should get away with it. In fact, OP's first remarks could be understood as an assault on the notion of Battered Woman Syndrome itself. I was supporting the general proposition merely by calling attention to a flaw in OP's reasoning.

If she had gone there in cold blood, just driven there, none of this rental car, hair dye crap, stuck a knife in him and was done with it she'd be free tonight using the "I was battered excuse." With all the intent and pre-meditation in the world.

you know how prisons have prison work programs where people can do difficult labor at the benefit of our corporate overlords?

Well... What if that work were to involve, say, "servicing" the community?  On camera.

2013-05-09 08:42:04 AM

Baz744: BeatrixK: Not ONE of his ex GF's testified to anything regarding a past history of abusive behavior from Alexander.

I was told there would be no math!!!!

BeatrixK:

Seems like the closest thing she had to any 'evidence' of injury was that broken finger...which wasn't healed properly:  if I were one of her attorneys, an x ray of said finger would have been front and center of my defense.

IANAD. That said, there is no xray to show - the finger isn't broken. I can comfortably hold my finger in that exact position. If the finger is injured and she is not faking, it is a flexor tendon injury. ( you can google but there are some surgery pics so graphic image warning, but there are also pics that look the same as her bent finger) The thing is, you can end up with a flexor tendon injury from a minor incident. One of my kids did it by tripping and jamming the tip of the finger into the wall. Not that hard, either. So even if she's not faking, there is no reason at all to think that it was the result of a beating. She could've whacked it on something. Or done it when she was violently murdering her ex boyfriend.

it doesn't really seem to matter much to anyone outside of whatever geographic area this is occurring.

can someone explain it in a nutshell?

and why is this a newsflash then?

nothing remarkable about anything that I just read, basic run-of-the-mill murder.

maybe it's because I don't have cable and that's why I'm not seeing it supposedly on every news channel.

seems more like a local-interest story, not national headlines

I heard two people talking about it yesterday and had no clue who they were talking about.

Then I found it on Fark this morning and the case came to me only because I saw it on Dateline a couple months ago.  When I saw the episode I knew she was toast.

OMG!  If you want a giant, heaping pile of WTF, you gotta go read/check out the evidence.  First of all, she's freakishly articulate for a psycho hose beast.  The 48 hours interview (first one) where she talks about the black-clad intruders sounds oddly plausible the way she describes it, and how calm and collected she is.  However, she did't fully think out her grand plan - since they'd taken sexy pics of one another about 4 hours before she stabbed him (29 times) slit his throat to the point he was almost decapitated...then de/cides she wasn't sure she'd killed him real good, and shot him in the head.  She was apparently taking some posed shots of him in the shower, then got stabby/slicey/shotty, and like, 3 -4 minutes after the last shot of this guy alive was taken, there's a shot of her dragging his bloody corpse across the floor.  Once detectives told her that 'Hey, ya know that camera that was thrown in the washing machine and run through the cycle with bloody sheets and stuff - yeah - we got pics outta that.' Then her story changed to 'He abused me, waahhhhhh.  Killed him in self defense...wahhhhhh'.

They were mormon, and also had a freaky sex life that involved tootsie pops and pop rocks, and had some phone sex tapes she recorded.

It's a study in cray-cray on an epic scale.

JohnnyApocalypse: Anyone check out her latest last-ditch effort to save her neck? "I prefer the death penalty. ANYTHING but life in prison!" Nice reverse psychology. We'll see how that works out.

Well I'd rather have the death sentence than life in general pop at a PMITA prison. The needle after about 20-30 years of appeals while safely isolated to avoid shankings and rape sounds better than either getting shanked in much less than 20-30 years or dieing in about 20-30 years of AIDS and/or HEP C from the prison rape.
