Because if you have the nerve to have sex (without protection, naturally, because not yours), you damn well better be prepared to host a few diseases that will conveniently destroy those nerves.

North Carolina already requires parental consent for teenagers seeking abortions. House Bill 693 would be the first law in the U.S. to amend that parental consent law to include STD testing and treatment, mental health counseling and other health services.

Yea, let's put more barriers between teenagers and physical/mental treatments. That's not going to backfire wildly at all.

Fortunately, almost all teenagers know that it is impossible to transmit or receive an STD via heterosexual oral or anal sex.

How long before they pass a law mandating honor killings?

"What if there's something happening in the home, some kind of abuse going on? If teenagers can't talk to their parents for whatever reason about their pregnancy or their STD or their substance abuse, they need to be able to access professional care."

Well yea, that just makes sense. Who would disagree with th-

Supporters of the bill argued on Tuesday that the bill ensures that parents are aware of their teenagers' risky behavior and helps them to address the root of the problem

Sigh. I'm sure "address the root of the problem" will never include harsh punishments and/or kicking them out.

This goes beyond that. The article makes it sound like even if the parents are with you you'll need a notarized statement. That brings in a fourth approving party after the teen, parents, and treating physician.

As a single (and promiscuous) male I get regularly tested for the whole range of hep, chlamydia, syph, gonorrhea, hiv etc. Nothing nicer than seeing "negative, negative, negative, negative..." all the way down the page.  This is, of course, free since I live in a socialist hell-hole.  Early ID-ing of STDs is a good way of preventing larger outbreaks which seems to make sense from both a public-health perspective as well as looking at the actual monetary costs to treating outbreaks of chlamydia or hepatitis.

Just curious -- how much do they charge for these tests in the USA or are they also free?  Can you get free STD testing?

2013-05-08 05:41:49 PM
That is really a terrible idea. From a public health standpoint, you're preventing testing and treatment of infectious diseases. How anyone can think this is a good idea is beyond me.

There is only one logical solution to this. Fathers of south carolina. Send your sons out to nab up the first politicians daughter they can find for a sexy time.

unwed pregnant teenage daughters of legislators will fix this issue very quickly

Depends on the STD, depends on the location.

Local community college regularly has anonymous HIV testing, but you'd have to pay for something like the gonorrhea or chlamydia. Planned Parenthood used to do a lot of free testing, but I'm sure you've seen how nice we've been to PP recently.

Then this does not go far enough.

I vote for requiring those that received an STD to wear a t-shirt, "I have an STD".

I suggest a different tee shirt for each disease. Women with AIDS should wear one with a large red letter A on it.

Somehow I'm not surprised. North Carolina is effing notary happy. I have to get every step of any legal proceeding notarized. For example, when I bought a car I had to get the title signed by both parties in front of a notary at the same time before I could register the car. Then there was the divorce, where every time I filed a paper of any type, it had to be signed off on by a notary. Then there was the immunization records for my kid--I had to get a notary to sign off that they were true because they were from another state. I'd almost think it was a racket the way they require notaries for every damn little thing.

As far as the STD thing....well, I'm not surprised on that either. I've seen what's come out of the legislature this year and it's just getting better and better with the derp.

Fun point of fact, atheists aren't allowed by law to be notaries in NC.  Because we can't see things, or something.

So, epidemiology is yet another science that right-wing folk do not believe in.

Cool Story Sis, time:

Last night I was talking with one of my nieces who is about to turn 30. I was telling her that when I was in high school, a girl could get birth control without parental permission. Since I lived with parents who would have locked my in my room until it was time for college if I ever even talked about birth control, I considered that a good thing. I wasn't sexually active until college, but one of my sister's was while she was in high school, and I made her go to Planned Parenthood. They were really discrete, and she never got pregnant the way both of our older sisters did.

I then asked her if she ever talked about getting birth control with her mom (my baby sister), and she said, "Absolutely not. I know mom was pro-birth control, and would not have been grounded or whipped, but she always made such a huge deal of everything that I never could have made myself talk to her about it. That's why I was the one to talk to my little sister."

If kids won't go to parents for something that proves they are responsible, how likely are they to go to their parents if they did something incredibly irresponsible? New rule: don't have sex with anyone who comes from North Carolina or who has had sex with someone who may have come from North Carolina. It's going to turn into Haiti.

The idea of requiring parental permission to get mental health testing/counseling is what really skeeves me out.  I had so many high school classmates with abusive parents/step-parents.

2013-05-08 06:28:06 PM
North Carolina already requires parental consent for teenagers seeking abortions. House Bill 693 would be the first law in the U.S. to amend that parental consent law to include STD testing and treatment, mental health counseling and other health services.

While I disagree with the need for parental consent upon seeking an abortion, I do understand other opinions do exist on this matter; however, to require parental consent for STD testing and treatment and mental health counseling is flatly disgusting, designed only to disempower and shame those who practice any type of sex or may suffer from emotional issues. This is not about talking with parents, who are often the root of emotional issues, but keeping teenagers beholden to indoctrinating beliefs.

2013-05-08 06:28:20 PM
FTFA: A Republican-controlled committee in the North Carolina General Assembly approved a bill on Tuesday that would require teenagers to present a notarized parental consent form in order to access sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, mental health counseling, pregnancy care or substance abuse treatment.

Raising any barriers to seeking mental health care for adolescents is an extremely farking poor idea.
