Thanks for the recommendation, but I really like cilantro and use it in everything from ceviche to tacos to asian dishes and soups so I know that isn't it. It is just that pho doesn't have enough flavor or substance to me. Noodles in a weak broth with random veggies and some floaty protein bits (if you are lucky) doesn't cut it with me, especially when they charge $5 for 50 cents worth of ingredients. It just isn't good or desirable to me, but if others like it, that's their problem...
Honestly, it doesn't taste like soap to me, but then there usually isn't much soap left in the water when I'm done washing dishes. :D
I'm not a picky eater and I'm the cook of the house, I'll make and eat everything from home cured/smoked salmon, bacon and sausages to sushi to soups or rotisseried chicken or leg of lamb. I'm not a chef by any means, but I make awesome Hunan beef, spicy coconut shrimp soup, tacos, pastas, humus, spring rolls, goulash, jumbalaya, sauerkraut, etc. I like to cook and love good food, but pho can kiss my butt!

Damn, see, now I'm hungry! I'll go nibble on some smoked cheddar...

Are you implying you drink the dishsoap? NTTAWWT

Then there's (tying in to the OP) KFC's in Saigon.

The one I went to smelled pretty strongly of butterfish. After exploding at both ends with common traveller's ailments, I wanted something schlocky and comfortable, so I sought out the KFC.

Don't go to the Saigon KFC. Just saying.

Not sure which KFC your referring too, there are many of them in HCM, unless its a general statement.

But, I can attest that I have never had a problem at KFC, and I eat there regularly.  Also, including the store in Vũng Tàu, and the one in Nha Trang.   Love me some of that super tangy ketchup they serve there..
