Why is it so many "experienced climbers" still tend to venture out without a partner?  For 1, it's a lot more fun to enjoy with someone else.  For 2 (and much more importantly), it's a safety issue.

Obviously the dog barked at him, thereby shooting bees out of its mouth. As in so many cases like this, though, the bees tragically turned on their master after completion of their primary objective.

The only way I can think of releasing a climbing harness while on the wall is cutting the rope.  It's not like there is a quick release lever.

One of these days, the Tucson or Phoenix (whatever the call it now) Open golf tournaments are going to have one hellacious stampede on their hands when killer bees attack the drunken crowds. One drunk guy's last words will be "Ow! It's in my hole!"

I'm going to avoid the whole soloing debate, since that doesn't have anything to do with this death. He was rappelling. You don't need another person to do it safely.

He was likely in the shiat middle of nowhere though, because after climbing across the country, I've never been to a place where people still hammer "spikes" into a cliff. Especially for rappelling...

Subby, I'd say falling to your death off a cliff and then being devoured in minutes by griffon vultures.
But that's just me.

Where are our medical experts? Is it entirely possible a 55-year-old man died from the shock of bee stings? From the pain or from stopping the heart or what?

Either way, it makes me glad I'm sitting here in my pajamas and robe and not giving one whit of consideration to either ascending or descending a mountain.

I would consider a head to head race to the top a sport.  But climbing by yourself would be like shooting hoops by yourself in the driveway.

Why does the part about the vultures matter? You're dead. I'd argue that the relatively short time you spend falling off a cliff is probably less horrifying than the minutes of terror you'd experience being stung by thousands of bees while trapped in a harness, combined with the sense of betrayal that your dog has decided to shoot bees at you.

Indiginous/normal honey bees? Maybe, probably.

Africanized honey bees? Probably.

His dog must have been alot smarter than mine. I'm pretty sure I couldn't leave mine at the top of a cliff and abseil down without him thinking it's some awesome new game. And no way he would wait around for me to hike my ass back up even if he didn't plummet to his death.

I was thinking the same thing.  I took my dog fly fishing once and he ended up two miles down river after swimming 100 yards straight into a Class 4 rapid.  Two lessons were learned: 1) Keep the dog on a leash around fast moving water; and 2) Damn, that dog can swim!
