We pretend there is a difference?

2013-05-08 10:38:06 AM
The video begins with a parade of teens staring into the camera, asking questions, including: Why can't I pray in school?

As far as I know, no one is saying you can't. A school official cannot prompt or endorse your prayer, however.

Why are they taking God out of my history books?

History books can mention Biblical figures if there's any evidence that they existed and played a key role in the history of man, along with the influence of Christianity upon history in general, however, that's about as far as that's going to go. Anything more than that may violate the separation of church and state, assuming we're talking about public schools here.

Why am I called names because I believe in marriage the way God designed it?

Because not even you, as a Christian, follow marriage the way 'God' designed it. Read the old testament sometimes and learn of the various marriage and marriage-like arrangements that your god recognized.

It's easy to call people names who are so ignorant of their own religion. Stop being so uneducated.

Are we done here now? Can this silliness come to an end?

Public school has become godless, the teens argue. ... the school system is now a place where students are rude, teachers force them to look at ... sex education images and [other kids] call Christians [who bully gay people] "hateful," "hypocrites" and "bigots"

Student rudeness aside, my hope for the future is somewhat restored.

and a science book!

it's everything you need, all wrapped up into a book written by hundreds of unknown authors over the course of a couple thousand years, translated from various languages such as hebrew, aramaic, greek and latin into multiple versions of english by hundreds of monks and scribes, each letting his personal bias inform his translation!

I remember growing up people talking about how anti-Christian the schools were. It was the same mentality 30 years go, particularly after the tweens and teens returned from church camp. (I never went because I saw how they'd be on a Jesus high for two weeks, then go back to being hypocritical (i.e., typical) kids, and I thought it was silly. I did, however, enjoy the stories the guys would tell when they returned about what they saw from the strategic perches that gave them unobstructed views into the girls' showers.)

I thought it was as ridiculous then as it is now. Nobody ever stopped me from praying, but I also didn't try to make a production of it. Nobody was hostile - unless someone started trying to shove religion down their throat (some people can't seem to take "NO" for an answer). Ultra-religious kids were kinda considered weird, but that was no different from the girls who went through Wiccan phases or the guys for whom D&D was more real than what was going on around them or any of the other kids who were somewhat out of sync with everyone else.

Christians now claim "oppression" when their beliefs are questioned/critiqued.  Never mind that some of those beliefs actually oppress others.  And never mind that criticizing beliefs is utterly protected under our Constitution.

"Being gay is wrong, you're going to hell and you're immoral.  Sex ed is immoral and wrong.  I support mandatory transvaginal ultrasounds for women before abortion."
"Hey, lay off, let people live the way they want to live if it doesn't hurt you."
"HELP!  I am under attack merely because of my religious beliefs!"

Certainly no teachers should be bullying their students no matter what the reason.

That being said, shouting "gays are going to hell" and having your classmates tell you to sit down and STFU is neither bullying nor oppresion.

We all like to think of ourselves as interesting and heroic (especially in high school). It's exciting to paint a picture of yourself as a misunderstood martyr. Just...most of us did it by listening to music that annoyed our parents.

You can pray in school, but the teacher can't lead the prayer. When we have primary evidence that he existed we'll put him back. Because you think that's a good enough reason to make laws about it.

King Something: Matthew 6:5-6

So THIS.  I remember a few years ago reading an article about teachers at a school who were outraged (OUTRAGED) that they were given an equipment closet as a "designated prayer room".  Not the slightest bit of irony or recognition that that is how Christ actually commanded them to pray.

I would admire Christianity a lot more if more Christians just followed that one tennent.

This is a problem that Christianity has been dealing with for over 1700 years. How to adapt a religion of an oppressed people to suit that of the powerful majority? The answer is now as it ever was - ignore the power you have and pretend you're a victim.

You better start going after these terrorist Jews, because they have cells in every major city in America, in every State, and in almost every country. They call themselves 'an Army' and they make their children sing songs like this:

From 770 we're marching out, on to victory without a doubt
To corners four we're marching happily
Nation after nation we are conquering

They call their official vehicles 'tanks'. They have their own flag. They were a uniform. They are willing to drop everything at the drop of a hat and live the rest of their lives in Siberia or in the middle of Africa if asked to. They will give over their lives for their mission. They are fundamentalist who believe in one G-d and following him above all. They pledge allegiance and follow one leader and one leader only, and it ain't Obama but rather their Rebbe. They value religious law even above secular law!

Quake in fear, America, for Lubavitchers are out to conquer the world with their army!

Now anyone who knows anything about Chabad will look at my post and chuckle at

Well that's exactly what is happening with that video. In no way do the people in that article plan to get weapons and fight wars and do anything like that, they have an army the same way 'spiritual warfare' will happen on 9/11 during a prayer day.

It has nothing to do with violence and to be scared of those people is just ridiculous. You might as well be terrorized by Chabad, because they are better organized and there a hundred thousand of them at least out there, and with the number of children they are having, we're looking at half a million by 2050.

Why can't I pray in school?

I'm pretty sure you still can.

Sittin' in the classroom thinkin' it's a sin
Listening to the teacher rap-just ain't my thin'
When two bells ring you know it's my cue
Gonna meet the boys on floor number 2

Prayin' in the boys room
Prayin'  in the boys room
Teacher don't you fill me up with your rule
Everybody knows that prayin'  ain't allowed in school

Take your God's advice:

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. b-b-b-but if I pray in private how can I show off and shove it in people faces?!?!

I'm pretty sure they've already lost.  Last I checked, people are gravitating towards the more nebulous "spirituality" and to a lesser extent non-religious than they are towards fundamentalism.

It won't stop them from becoming even more shrill though.

Also, it's not bullying to ask you to stop bullying others.

All I got from that video is that we desperately need to reinstate funding for the literacy and the arts in Idaho.

You are absolutely allowed to pray in school. What you are not allowed to do is force a captive audience to listen to you pray or force them to pray with you.

You are absolutely allowed to read the Bible in school. You can even read it in school as an example of literature. What you are not allowed to do is use it as a means to proselytize.

You are allowed to believe marriage is only between a man and a woman. You are even allowed to say that out loud to people. What you are not allowed to do is prevent others from saying that they disagree with your opinion.

Freedom is a two-way street.

Peter Sprigg, a spokesman for anti-same-sex marriage Christian lobbying group Family Research Council (FRC), bemoaned the fate of his organization in a CNN piece earlier this week, while other Christian pundits have suggested that anti-gay, Christian activists may one day be treated similar to how the Jews were treated during the Holocaust.

That's completely absurd, we would feed them to lions. Environmental laws prevent us from burning them all.

FTA:    "...while other Christian pundits have suggested that anti-gay, Christian activists may one day be treated similar to how Jews were treated during the Holocaust.

Please. The Holocaust is always compared to tiny things. They could see being disagreed with as like the Holocaust. They could see not stomping on the rights as other groups as like the Holocaust. They could see having no more milk in the fridge as like the Holocaust.
