People do not want to pay more for their cigarettes.

The universal preschool program is/was a great idea, but considering half of Congress is insanely anti-tax and anti-education, it was never going to go through in the first place.

WTF is this guy's problem?

2013-05-08 08:33:43 AM
Presidential budgets are all about theater. But this year's was more theatrical than most: Its biggest single new proposal - the sin tax to generate $78 billion to fund a preschool education program

Can we fund it with Marlboro Miles then?

crazydave023: People do not want to pay more for their cigarettes.

People who don't smoke don't give a shiat, and are quite happy to rip off smokers in order to pay for government programs.

People don't want smokers throwing their nasty cigarette butts out on the highway either. Or on the street in general.

It is disgusting. If it were up to me, I'd increase the taxes by $200 billion.

I see we've already done the 'he's not a dictator' thing so perhaps if I quickly run through a couple of other standard excuses we can close the thread up early:

'B..b..b..but GOP obstructionism'
'He's just being smart and playing the long game'
'BSABSVR'

I've skipped a few but that should be enough to cover it for now. Nothing to see here, move along.

Meh.  Go ahead and raise cig taxes, whatever.  I'm surprised conservatives don't support this, because it's primarily a tax on the poor.

2013-05-08 08:41:09 AM
We should be funding those programs through general taxation, not sin taxes which can fluctuate depending on whether or not people get tired of paying so much for their vice.

Right, rich people don't smoke...*rolls eyes*.

I support it, because it's a tax on the stupid. Maybe they can buy up all the cigarettes like Big Sis is buying up all the bullets?

This.  It's disingenuous to say you want to fund a good thing with something you're trying to eliminate.

Yes, because cigarette taxes affect the rich and the poor equally.  They each pay the same percentage of their disposable income on cigarette taxes.

Disclaimer: I'm in favor of higher taxes.  It has been discouraging smoking.  It works.  But it's laughable to claim that a cigarette tax affects a smoking billionaire in any way other than another reason to shriek "WHAR FREEDOM WHAR".

people that drive cars should complain more about smokers polluting the environment with their cigarette butts.

And what would you increase taxes on once everyone quits smoking because they can no longer afford it?

I suspect it's more that many smokers are bootstrapy real marekins who will go without insurance until they get lung cancer then jump onto Obamacare or Medicare faster than you can say Ayn Rand.

You want to charge how much for a pack?  Fark that, I'll buy the black market shiat and pay zero tax thanks.

We don't need more taxes on cigarettes because the government is now making everyone buy obamacare.

I don't know about that.  Granted, there are alot of definitions for irony here on FARK though.

I'm perfectly fine with reasonable taxes on legal items (including weed - CO resident here).  If you actually need the tax income (as I believe we do with the cigarette tax money), taxing something so much that it makes people quit (or drives the product to the black market) is stupid.

Sin taxes like on cigarettes and alchohol are a tax on the poor.

They are the most affected.

Raise the tax too high and you start running into problems with bootleggers, who are doing a lovely business in high-tax states like New York.

The tax needs to be at whatever level balances revenues with bootlegging hassles.

Tax the bejesus out of cigarettes. Just don't make them unaffordable so people start quitting. It's a great revenue stream, totally voluntary, and the biggest payers will die before spending decades drawing Social Security and Medicare.

By the tax or by the health problems caused by smoking and drinking that Medicaid has to pay for?

Probably why many blacks don't get to collect SS, 25% of them are smokers.

CIgarette taxes are also racist.

Fair enough since those things are also gross and nasty when people throw them on the street.

And don't even get me started on the rank smell and risk of second hand nicotine from those patches.

when are they going to start taxing fat people for unhealthy eating?  is Taco Bell going to be the last restaurant?

Nonsense. You have to die of something. Smoking just puts your ass in the hospital/grave sooner.

The money we save on SS due to early deaths, as well as long term care on those people, more than makes up for the cost of cancer care.

You are correct from a strictly revenue maximizing/expenditure minimizing point of view.

But from a moral perspective, I'd agree that cigarette taxes are unfair in that they target a relatively poor, uneducated, and addicted segment of the population. Like the lottery.

The advent of two Dorito shell flavors makes me think the Franchise Wars truly WILL go to Taco Bell. Just like in RISK, it'll come down to Taco Bell and KFC, then their alliance will have to end...
