I have owned a 78 camaro mullet mobile and I didn't even read the article.

My first car was a Reliant K car. I got it for a handful of change, never insured it, never got it registered, never got it inspected, and drove it for a year and a half to and from work. It never died, never needed anything but gas, and it never got stuck in the snow or mud (a plentiful commodity here in VT). I loved that car. I sold it to a friend when I went to college who in turn sold it to some chick in NH who ended up trying to sue him 'cause it turns out the gas tank had a hole and it blew up on her and a friend one day and would have killed them had they been much closer to it at the time. They didn't win. THE END

Very amusing articles...I love hearing about people's first cars. Mine was an 86 Cadillac DeVille...I loved that car. Too bad it died, we put so much work into it.

teehee

i've just got my first car

it's a renault clio... doesn't have quite the same nostaligic value as some but i like it

it's green. (i'm a farkette- this is a very important feature for me)

83 Oldsmobile Cutlass Suprime Brogham! Ah yes, the luxury of early 80's 2 coupes. I drove it all through high school and it ran great, no maintinence. I sold it to a friend before I went to college and he managed to kill it in 2 weeks...loser.

My first car was 1966 Ford Fairlane that my Dad bought as a piece of junk and worked my ass off helping him restore. I biatched the whole time about having to give up my Saturdays until the job was done. It looked great when we were finished. Black interior and fire engine red exterior and it ran like a scalded dog. Can you imagine the shock on my 16 year old face when he handed me the keys and said "Here, honey, it's yours."? My old man was the shiat.

**2 DOOR coupes**

oh, how could i have forgotten?

renault clio is the car from the papa nicole adverts (don't know if you had them in america...might have been kind of an english thing) but anyway, it means that i get to go around randomly shouting "PAPA!" and "NICOLE!" at people. which makes me happy.

First car was a Chevy Cavalier. Ran great. I paid about $5000 for it, drove it for 12 years, then sold it for $300 to some girl who needed something to drive to Kentucky or somewhere. Then I bought my current car, a Dodge Stealth.

2001-12-01 11:56:57 AM
Mine was a 1972 Volkswagen Camper Bus for $500.00. I sold it several years later for $1500.00, and it needed a new engine at the time......again. I wish I had kept it. Ahhh, the memories. Ron's was a 1976 MG Midget....needed constant work but was fun as hell to drive.

2001-12-01 12:15:50 PM
you expect me to read something that long?

2001-12-01 12:17:17 PM
i still own my first ride. 1967 chevy nova (two door), got it when i was 16, drove it to the ground. getting older now and felt sorry for the evils that i had done to it, so...i from the ground up, restored it. here are some picture.

in the beginnin: a million pieces

before: 283 -------- After: 350
before: inside -------After: inside

finally, only interior, glass and chrome to go.

Good story Doofus. My story is similar but I got a trashed 1969 Fairlane, and my dad helped me every once in a while.

http://sites.onlinemac.com/fairlane/whitecar.jpg

There's a pic. This thing looked like it was just driven off the showroom floor when I got done with it. Not bad I don't think for a 15 year old kid! I ended up driving it off a bridge into a creek when I was 16. farkin hydroplaned on me big time!

Take it easy.

Jason!

Talbot rizon.
Would have been a "Horizon", but the "Ho" had broken off.

(errrr... posting to a mainly-Merkin forum, it's only now that I realise that this is funny. Ya know. Father Christmas. Not.)

It got serviced regularly, every two years just before inspection time. I.e., once, because it died at 3 1/2 (my time, that is - I think it was actually about 15 or so). Left front wheel dropped off once, just after exiting the highway. Well, I guess it would have exited on its own anyway, had it still been on the freeway, just not on a ramp. The mechanic who fixed it said he had never seen such a thing happen, or a more poorly maintained car. Heh.

2001-12-01 12:26:30 PM
Fair, that's only the first part of the story. (laughing) I was racing that Fairlane on Saddy nites and Dad got wind of it. He repossesed the Fairlane and presented me with a new Dodge Omni that wouldn't run over 90 mph. My Mom thought it was so sweet of him. (rolling eyes). After Mom went into the house, Dad looked at me and said "I don't reckon you'll be winning many with this one." He laughed and walked away. Not only was my Dad the shiat, he was always 2 steps ahead of me.

First thing I drove? An aircraft carrier. Feel the power, baby.

First car? A toyota hatchback that I rolled three weeks later.

Its gotabout 250000 miles on it, a it more really. I LOVE IT. We call it the blue bomb, on account that its blue and could explode at any moment.

2001-12-01 01:19:30 PM
First car was a HUGE blue Olds '98 with a 455 Rocket. Cost $300. I could fit about 15 friends in it. We called it the Land Shark and The Party Barge. Ahhhhh....good times.

First vehicle: Chevy Blazer.

First actual "car" car which is much more nostalgic: 1979 Triumph Spitfire, acquired in 1994. Still own it!

2001-12-01 01:24:20 PM

Mine was a mazda b2000 p/u. Now Understand. I am 6'4", and I had a "booming" sound system sitting right behind the bucket seats I had installed. When I was driving it, I looked like thqat guy on the simpsons that nelson had made fun of when he drove by. hehehe....I love that episode.

First car 1973 Mercury Capri V6. The one with the chrome bumpers not the big assed plastic ones. It's amazing to think how many times I had sex in the back seat of that. In order:

1973 Capri V6
1981 (?) VW Socrocco with euro 225 HP GTi engine
1986 Toyota 4X4 SR-5 Xtra Cab (stolen)
1987 Escort GT
1994 Mustang Cobra (weekend driver)
1987 Nissan 2dr Pathfinder (daily driver)

My very first car was a blood-red Ferrari Testarossa. It was beautiful. Super fast and made everyone of my friends jealous. I had always wanted a yellow Ferrari, but the Testarossa was great. Then my next Hot Wheel was a Lamboghini Countach.

yea, parking is a biatch with it. The nice thing is, its a big enough piece of crap to "park by feel".

it will be the car tag champion.

'72 Volvo 142s...we loved that dual motorcycle-carb piece of shiat..May she rest in pieces

2001-12-01 02:53:00 PM
first car - 1950 chevy 2dr teardrop body. went thru two engines in that one. only brand new car - '79 chevy monte carlo. still have it. trans went around 240,000 miles, it sat for a while got rebuilt trans then rear ended. have the car and new clip, etc. but since it will need minor frame straightening haven't put it all back together yet.

2001-12-01 04:34:32 PM
My very first car was an '85 4 door Chrysler Lebaron. It was gold color and dubbed 'JuggerCar'. During late nights over boring weekends, many a shopping cart lost its life to a '35 mph cross parking lot' ram session from JuggerCar. I once even pushed a huge dumpster with. It also moonlighted as an off-road vehicle. I only got stuck 18 times (half up the axle). I bought it for $800 with 250K miles on it and drove it for 2 1/2 years while in high school. This car is dead now but it had a happy life.

2001-12-01 04:49:54 PM
My first car was John Voight's car.

Remember the episode of Seinfeld were George drove the '82 brown with white top '82 Chrysler LeBaron? That was my high school ride. My parents moved it down to the Florida vacation house, so I still drive it when I go there. Cracks me up.

2001-12-01 05:12:46 PM

My first car.

2001-12-01 05:24:22 PM
My first one was a 83 Chevy Ciation. It was my Grandma's car before mine. It was 10yrs old with 23K miles on it. It ran very good until my sister spun out on ice on a highway, flipped (she was fine), and totaled the car.

2001-12-01 05:38:55 PM
My first car (bought just this year when I turned 18) is a 1996 Honda Civic. Paid a ton of money for it but I love it, not because of the type of car but because its mine. But thank god I wasn't deprived like the BigMeat guy in the article, my parents always let me take their rides, but my dad would never teach me to drive a stick shift thus my Civic is an automatic :(

2001-12-01 06:12:08 PM
I got my first car when I was 21, back in 1994. My husband traded a computer for a 1979 Chevy Malibu, slate blue with a white top. I had it for a year, then I hit a pothole while turning a corner and busted the axle. A month later I got a black 1986 Dodge Charger, had that for 2 years, then I got rid of it because the clutch went out. At the same time I got my current car, my 1993 Ford Festiva. :) I still have it. Guess 3rd time's the charm....

2001-12-01 06:48:30 PM
Long list ahead. I have been real hard on cars in the past.
1. 77 Datsun B-210 hatchback brown/red polka dots.
2. 78 Ford Maverick- Had a 300 cid straight 6 that outrun a 302 w/nitrous once. Really pissed that guy off too.
3. 78 Datsun B-210 hatchback- Hey, I really liked these cars. Traded the Maverick for it. Noticed a little rust spot on the undercarriage and took it to a body shop. They took one look and laughed at me. Seems the leaf springs were wired on with coathangers. I was 16 so making such a bad deal didn't bother too much.
4. 65 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. 427 4bbl, all original. We called it the "Mafia Ride" cause it was long and black. Used to give Corvettes a head start in drag races. Only lost once, that was to a Ferrari 308. I would have beat him but it was raining and I lost traction when I floored it at 70mph.
5. 75 Chevrolet "Chevelle" Malibu. I hated that car. Completely worn out engine. Spent most of a summer under that piece of crap.
6. 82 Datsun 4x4 pickup. They still tell stories about places I took that truck in Crab Orchard, Wva-14 years ago. Only a Hummer can out 4-wheel one of these. Used to pull jeeps out of mudholes then show them how fun it is to drive right through those same mudholes with a real 4x4. No lift kits, No giant tires, just regular LT75 no names. I miss that truck. Wife got pregnant and it could only hold 2 people (legally).
7. 86 Nissan Sentra. Good car. But they only go 64,000 miles without an oil change before the motor blows.
8. 76 Ford Torino GT. Very fast. It was the first car I ever went over 100 in. See, my Grandpa bought it for my Grannie and when I was 8 they took me to see the Great Smoky Mountians. They started arguing and the louder it got, they faster we went. Grandpa got to 118 before I said anything. Should have heard Grannie scream when she realised how fast we were going.
9. 77 Volkswagen Diesel Dasher stationwagen. This is the worst junk I have ever owned. There are no words to descibe how much I hate that car. The axles had a habit of just coming off for no reason. That would leave me by the road, usually at night, underneath that junkpile trying to put bent bolts back into their proper places just to drive a little further before having to do it again. Push start only, no matter how many starters I put in it. I quit paying on it and when the repo guy showed up I helped him load it up with a smile on my face.
10. 77 Chevrolet Impala Stationwagen. Good car. Loved it. Painted it using a Rainbow vacuum cleaner and white interior latex paint. (It was a taxicab and yellow before I got it) Put a big black peace sign on the hood and wrote "peacemobile" on the sides. Took it to a hippy festival called "The Rainbow Family Gathering" It was a big hit.
11. 84 Nissan Sentra. Good car, even raced it once in SCCA and beat a couple Corvettes. Was teaching the wife how to drive and she took it out by herself while I was at work. She blew the engine real good (an my neigbor too, but that is another story.)
12. 82 Ford Mustang. Wasn't mush of a car. Wouldn't even spin out on wet roads.
13. 75 Ford F100. Had maybe 300,000 miles on it. Got my $600 worth out of it though.
14. 80 Ford Fairmont. Had a 4.2 liter v-8 that died promptly at it's programmed wear out milage or 78,000. Just like the Mustang did.
15. 75 Chevrolet Custom shortbed truck. Someone had put a 350 out of a trans-am in it. Really, really fast truck. No window on the driver's side, column shift transferred to the floor leaving a huge, open hole in the floor (and only I could shift it. Never took the keys out. I wanted someone to steal it so I could see how far they got)
16. 88 Subaru hatchback. I loved that car. Stupid soccer mom in her minivan was flying through a parking lot and totalled it. She ran her mouth so much the cops made it my fault to shut her up. Insurance company wasn't fooled though. They paid her NOTHING.
17. 89 Accura Integra. Small, but real fast and real fun. Let my brother-in-law use it ONE TIME to go to work and he gets plowed by a F-350 doing 55 mph. Nothing left but scrap metal.
AND FINALLY....
18. 87 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. Cost too much and 2 week after I bought it the motor blew. Paid too much for it to let it sit so I put a new motor in it. I reckon I will be driving it for a LONG time.

19. 94 Chevrolet C-1500 W/T Used only for work. I got it from a company that does all the road construction work around here. Got it for $4,600 when the blue book was like $10,000. 202,000 miles and runs like a champ.

Sometimes I wish I had kept all my old cars. I would have a nice size used car lot by now.

Kat , if you're gonna drive a farkin' pick-up , you're gonna have to farkin' curse more ...

************** 1970 Buick Skylark : cost $170.00 ;P

2001-12-01 07:14:07 PM
1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass hardtop with 29,000 miles on it in 1993. Spare tire had never been used, five snowbrushes in the trunk.

2001-12-01 07:15:07 PM
99 Maxima, bought brand new (after getting a nice raise), I was sold when I took it on a test drive, and the dealer told me to "punch the gas", he let me take it up to 120 MPH.

Before that, I spent four hours per day bussing to work. (1 1/2 hours going, 2 1/2 hours coming back.) Had to wake up at friggin five in the morning to catch the first buss There was a 40 minute window. Miss that and you would miss the connections, thus making me about 1 1/2 hours late to work :( That's the part of my life that I call the dark ages.

2001-12-01 07:45:03 PM
I've still got my first one; A 1965 Volvo P1800.

Absolutely beautiful car, but probably the noisiest machine ever built. I used to drive it around San Fransisco just to watch people freak and jump out windows.

2001-12-01 07:45:55 PM

Mmmmm, sweet, Wouldn't you love to own it?

Only $1000 right now!

2001-12-01 07:47:24 PM
Note, the large orange cat below the rear fender is extra.

2001-12-01 07:51:31 PM
1967 ford station wagon over 300 cc with 4 barrel carb; would go over 100mph in a hurry.

2001-12-01 08:03:03 PM
first car: 1976 chevette. you're not alone, fouff! whether offroading downtown or donuts at the school, it was a fun car. mom bought it new for about $3000, lasted 25 years with no major repairs (save losing the e-brake cable a couple of times) and traded it in for $2700.
that's a hell of a deal.
the floor on the driver's side had a hole in it so we put a piece of cardboard over it, had no radio, and a dragging license plate. it had quite a bit of zip for a straight 4, < 100hp.
i miss that car.

2001-12-01 08:10:38 PM
1985 Jeep Renegade. Damn I loved my Jeep, I learned to drive in that thing, and I could do anything I wanted with it, and it would not break. I never actually got to drive it with a drivers license though. I am just now 16, and I traded it in for my current love, a Red 98 Mustang. Yes, thats right, a mere 16 year old kid has a 98 Mustang, and mommy and daddy did not buy it for me, I busted my ass for it.

2001-12-01 08:23:43 PM
Anybody want to buy an '85 Izuzu Impulse?

2001-12-01 08:49:20 PM
Happyfit Its really sad that you had to prostitute yourself just for a car. I think in the long run it would have been better for you, and your ass, if you would have let mommy and daddy get it for ya.

2001-12-01 09:30:47 PM
Cross your fingers for me, I may be about to get my first car:
A '98 Audi A4 2.8 in dark blue.
It's a beautiful thing, and the first car I ever drove. Belongs to my grandfather's wife. She's thinking of getting rid of it, so I just might be the lucky recipient. Too bad I won't be able to get my license until next August. It'll look nice sitting on my street...
Now to figure out how I'd deal with the $300/month insurance for a 16y/o in California...

2001-12-01 09:37:50 PM
I feel for ya Oh the hugh manatee soon as I bought my civic my whole paycheck dissapeared. Insurance is hella expensive down here in California and so is gas. I blame all those damn rice racers.

2001-12-01 09:57:05 PM
Oh, we feel for you, spoiled one.

2001-12-01 10:04:09 PM
Willy Pete: Cool!
Happyfit: Bleh, I would have kept the Jeep. Much cooler.

My first car? 1985 Buick Skylark. Still drive it. It's much more fun than it sounds. Muffler is just hanging there unattached, so it's loud. Real tourquey engine too.

As soon as I get my 1977 Chevy Big Ass Orange Van(tm) running, I'm gonna drive it. :)
