mjbok: Back when I was in middle school (mid 80's) girls had these things that I think were called "slam-books".  In them they rated all of the guys in the class from 1st to worst, plus had anecdotes about different guys, which guys they'd do what to/for, etc.

How is this different, except the genders are reversed and it is updated for present day?

//Did stuff like this exist in other schools?

We had those in the 1970s, and I'm sure it goes back decades before then. Slam books in my day rated everyone (they consisted of a person's name at the top of each page, and others would write what they thought of that person). The 9th grade graduates' sections of my junior high school yearbooks always had a couple of pages of photos of the kids who were voted Best Looking, Smartest, Most Athletic, etc., as did each year's final edition of the school newspaper. It's nothing new.

IIRC they were "banned" at my middle school, but for naught because no one had heard of them before being informed that it wasn't allowed.

Misattribution bias.  It isn't happening more often. It's being caught more often because of a societal shift in the "it's not okay if someone rapes you" department. That, and the internet.

I had another account several years back.  I remember a thread from Drew telling people that the boobies pics had gotten into NSFW territory, and everyone needed to tame it down a little.  Of course, that thread was filled with comments about how it's our right to post pics of these guys.

banandar123: So the website has been running for 5 years...Yet highschool is typically over in 4 years. Well tl;dr, I'd love to know more about the guy that runs this. Isn't the average freshman like 14 or 15? So if he started the contest at 14 years old, he'd be a minimum of 19 years old now. So in 5 more years, he's gonna be some 24 year old dude running a highschool hottie website. Creepy eh.

/Then again, it could be handed down to future generations or whatever.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: We did this back in high school, set up like March Madness. We got about to the Sweet Sixteen before word got around to the girls who were on the list (never did find the mole) but strangely enough, their knowledge didn't ruin the game. It made it even better. They gave their all, day in and day out, to be the hottest girl in school. They wanted to win.

If I recall correctly, an underdog sophomore shocked the world.

Right.... Because teaching guys at a young age that women are only there as sex objects is a GREAT idea!

Every time someone says this I am forced to assume they have never actually met a man/teenage boy.

We see women as sex objects. After we get to know you, sure, then we can see you as a person. But before that, it's all would/would not hit.

No, we just hear about it more. Before digital media, it was unlikely you'd hear about it every time a cheerleader got drunk and taken advantage of at a party. You thinking sexual assault is dramatically on the rise beyond other times in history would be cutely naive if it wasn't so asinine.

Also I am glad to be in the knowing that personages such as I are not lonely in picturing Meow Said The Dog in being very much like the Björk in my head.
