And double this. Although their large bags of jalapeno chips have been hit or miss lately. The small ones you get at sandwich/burger shops are always spicy and great, but I think they use the same amount of seasonings on the small bags as they do the large ones and it dilutes the flavor.

I would have bet money on the trashiest, most "Idiocracy"-like flavor -- chicken and waffles. Glad I didn't put money on it.

I put enough Sriracha in my cooking. I don't need chips with it.

Haha yea I used to get those whenever my family was heading down to Rockport as a kid. A local place called Praseks was the only place I knew that carried them (this was well over 15 years ago). They are great. They used to come in a red bag, before they started doing different colors for different flavors.

The only chips that really suck are those Miss Vickies Jalapeno chips (which I just found out are made by Lay's). God those are terrible. They're more sweet than spicy.

I don't know why; maybe it's because they were the chips we had in high school.  But to me, the apex of chipdom is Wachusett Chips.  I'm guessing, btw, that said new Lays - which I never, ever saw anywhere near here - will not be lasting very long now that the novelty is over.

So isn't cheesy garlic like pretty much every other chip out there?

Hot and spicy chips ftw.  Then again, a main stream brand would never make them hot enough to be any good.  They have to pander to the lowest common denominator, and that demographic doesn't like anything spicier than spaghetti sauce.

Much more cost effective to "pick" the winner where you already have most of the ingredients for... not hard to add more cheese to a line that already has cheese on it.

Maple Syrup?  I think they'd have to invent whole new processes to get that flavor into a chip.  You just know there was a private boardroom meeting where the costs were discussed beforehand and the "winner" being determined.

As a semi-amateur hot sauce aficionado, I simply don't get the fanboyism love for  Sriracha.  It's not bad, but rather unremarkable.  I see it like the people that sing praises for Coke or Pepsi.  Yes, it's a popular brand, nationally and internationally, and no, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, unless you consider generic, ubiquitous flavor to be a bad thing, which I don't.

Not like it matters, I don't really buy or eat chips.  But that makes me popular when I eat out with friends, since they always get the benefit of eating my chips and fries with any meals that come with those things by default.  Still, I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to try these chip flavors.  Some of them are pretty good and/or interesting.

I make my own with German Carola potatoes, organically grown locally in sterilized soil enriched by the castings of Canadian Nightcrawlers,  sliced paper thin with a custom made Shun knife, then lightly fried in triple filtered extra extra virgin olive oil, drained on Egyptian cotton towels, and dusted with  rare Mediterranean sea salt.

Only the best for me.

The Sriracha-flavored chips were beyond repugnant. I tried one bag, and tossed it about 1/3 the way through. And I pour sriracha over my breakfast cereal.

My thoughts exactly. I don't trust these company contests. Most of them have to be rigged at some level. Don't you think? If not at the top then someone lower down made one of their family members or buddies rich. I doubt most of these companies keep an eye on their temporary backend programmers or marketing firms.

That was the worst by far.

This.

The chicken & waffle chips were alright, if only for the novelty (or while stoned), but I thought the cheesy garlic ones were the only flavor I really liked. I tried one of the sriracha ones just to see how it tasted on chips (since I hate the sauce), and subsequently drank about 3/4 of a pint of chocolate milk to get the flavor out of my mouth.

I am very disappointed in America for picking the boring one (as America usually does).... At least they didn't pick the disgusting sounding one (but I admit I never tried it)... HOWEVER, I am just sad they didn't pick Siracha.. Not happy.

THIS

Literally, everyone I know that has tried these chips (at least 20) has picked Sriracha. I don't recall anyone picking the Cheesy Garlic and everyone hated the Chicken and Waffles.

Well, now you do.

Yeah. EVERYONE I talked to hated Hated HATED the Chicken and Waffles - even me. Tasted like overly salty pecans and sugar. Had the Shiracha(sp?) and was sorely disappointed; didn't taste like the sauce and wasn't hot.

And around here the garlic and cheese - which everyone I've talked to who could find it - is the favorite.

Too bad Lay's screwed up the distribution.

I had the same problem.  I don't believe it was a distribution screw up, but more of a intentional supply shortage.  Make equal amounts of the new flavors and see which one runs out and gets phone calls demanding more.  They can only make so much chips each day.

All three of those flavors were very "meh" to borderline terrible for me.  Not too surprised Cheesy Garlic won, but Chicken n Waffles is the stupidest f*ckin idea for chips.

they are "crisps" not "chips"..

the only argument that I could ever see holding any kind of weight in this discussion is that what we in the US call chips, the folks in the UK call crisps..  while using the terms "chips" for what we call "fries"

/runs out of the room laughing maniacally

It is illegal to call Pringles "crisps" in the UK, but I can't find anyone who knows what the hell they are called.

As I understand there, was a simular legal argument in the US when Pringles came out and dominated the market for a short while, all the regular chip manufactures cam out and caused a stink about the definition of what a pringle was, and the legal definition for what they are was set in the US back in the 70's as well.  but lord if I could find anything to link to besides the UK ruling either..

but hell.. no.. they aint chips... US definition of "Crisps" fine.. but it aint a "chip"

with that.. I declare the argument over :)

Whatever. It's Maryland crab seasoning. Old Bay and seasonings like it were traditional Chesapeake Bay crab seasonings before they started putting it into cans and shipping it across the US. Old Bay is just a genericized trademark. They didn't invent the seasoning.

Cheese bread, it was the only one of the normal flavors.  It was the one they were always going to make, the "voting" was irrelevant.

If, somehow, one of the others won they would just drop it "due to low sales", then make the cheese bread ones anyway. Probably with a huge "look what's back" advertising campaign.

I tried the Chicken & Waffles first,  I liked the idea.  The execution left something to be desired.  A store would have to be out of a lot of options for me to buy another bag.  The household did finish 'em off, but no one asked me to bring home another.

I found the Sriracha chips to be really disappointing.  I had high hopes: Doritos Tapatio chips are good and genuinely reminiscent of the eponymous sauce.  The Sriracha Lay's were just too subtle.

I couldn't buy the cheesy garlic bread one: the one that intrigued me the least.  That flavor was sold out every time I looked for it, after finishing the other two bags.  This is why I'm not surprised by this result.

I was really hoping Sriracha would win, but of course the most boring, unoriginal flavor won. I'm assuming the contest was rigged from the start though.

ModernLuddite: To be fair, though, after about 6 chips you will no longer have taste buds that function.

Best chips ever!!!! So glad they got the packages fixed so they could ship via air. The price dropped about 75 cents after that. Only chips I can finish a whole bag in one sitting.

Alls I know is that if Uncle Ray isn't telling me some homoerotic incestual story backed by Bible verses on the bag, then they're not really potato chips to me.

We're talking about Lay's, here.

If you want something other than boring and unoriginal, you get some goddamn local herbs and grated artisanal parmesan from the marker's market and fry some sliced potatoes in peanut oil. You don't stop at 7-11.

I tried the Sriracha ones, they were quite good, but also very disappointing. They didn't really taste like Sriracha. And weren't spicy at all.

I think that was because of weird trademark stuff, the Huy Fong Foods brand can't treadmark Sriracha because it's a location or something so other companies can use the name and try to mimic the hot sauce.

So just buy some Siracha and pour it on. Problem solved.
THIS. Y'alll are too lazy to get a little salt and vinegar, or pepper, or BBQ sauce or seasoned salt and put it on your chips? methinks it's time to step off the Rascal and take a few laps around the divan, Lumpy.

THIS

Literally, everyone I know that has tried these chips (at least 20) has picked Sriracha. I don't recall anyone picking the Cheesy Garlic and everyone hated the Chicken and Waffles.

So I guess you just learned a lesson in anecdotal evidence? Or maybe not?

Are there any cold flavored chips? I mean, hot around where I live, it's kinda run of the mill.

Mmm... Menthol potato chips...

Oak: I tried the Chicken & Waffles first,  I liked the idea.

Pretty much this was my opinion as well. I'm still surprised Chicken and Waffles didn't win simply for the novelty.

Forced to choose I would have voted for sriracha though it really doesn't taste much like sriracha.

I'd pitch kimchi flavored next go around but I can't imagine many Americans giving that a shot.

And of course all of you sriracha lovers can just get regular Lays and add sriracha powder:

These are quite good. I've found them at the Big Lots stores near me.

Thank God that there is someone making a bloody mary flavored chip. I did try the Lays contest and made a bloody mary, and poutine one, but they obviously weren't picked.

Everyone I know liked the Chicken and Waffles. I thought they tasted like day old stale dark meat.

Sriracha tasted like a BBQ type chip.

Out of the three I preferred the Cheesy Garlic Bread but I wouldn't run out to buy them.

Dammit, I just used up the last of my cock sauce tonight in some potatoes.

And now I'm craving blair's pure death. All I have is zerker sauce, and that's just ugly extract stuff without any good flavor.

America is predictable as always.

this.  all our ramen is boring flavors too.  like Chicken or Beef.

nothing exciting like the shiat they get in Japan
[www.burn-blog.com image 500x298]

just ordered a 24 pack on Amazon for ONLY $18.00

if your town has a "china town" there is going to be an asian market, and in that market there will be a whole isle dedicated to ramen.. in my town, that market is called Tan-A and the ramen aisle is 50 feet long, both sides, floor to ceiling, and is.... awesome...

There is all kinds of delicious stuff you can get in an Asian market that you won't find in the average grocery store in the USA.  And if you're lucky your town will not only have one or two "Asian" markets, but a Korean market, a Japanese market, etc.  To bring this back a little closer to the original thread topic among other wonderful things you may find some pretty awesome chips or chip-like snacks.

Personally, I'm fond of the rice crackers with seaweed. They taste better that they sound, I promise you.

Oh sweet baby Jesus are the snack foods at the local Korean grocery store deeeeelicious. The "Nong Shim" brand ones are always good.

What, you don't tuck your hair into your dress?

Me, I actually thought the Chicken & Waffles was a hoax, up until last weekend when I finally saw a bag in the wild. Didn't even consider trying it. I'm a Sour Cream & Onion guy.

Zapp's are way better than Lay's anyway.

Zapp's? I used to love Cajun Crawtaters. Always thought they would go national.

Love Zapps. On a  food tv show on snack foods one of the stops was at the Zapps factory. Tip: They recommend turning the back upside down and opening it from the bottom so all the spice that settled in the bottom can recoat the rest.

They already have them, they're called "Pringles Sour Cream and Onion"
