They picked a winner already? For fark's sakes, I never even saw any of the flavors but the Sriracha one...

THE MOST CAUCASIAN FLAVOR WON.   MERICA!

2013-05-07 11:12:14 PM
They only ones we could even get here were the Sriracha ones, and they were not good.  I love Sriracha, and those chips tasted nothing like it.  Not spicy, not sweet, not anything roostery.  We do have TimTams out the yin-yang, though...

/Podunk tx REPRESENT!

I've pretty much come to learn that every chip made is somehow better than Lay's.
Lay's is like Budweiser. They win because they take up the most shelf space with the same product.

CHEESE & GARLIC!!?? How original.

The only potato chips I'll eat anymore are the Dark Russet ones, Utz makes them but I have seen them occasionally from other manufacturers. If you've never had them, they have the best, most intense potato flavor and they're fried in peanut oil.

just ordered a 24 pack on Amazon for ONLY $18.00

if your town has a "china town" there is going to be an asian market, and in that market there will be a whole isle dedicated to ramen.. in my town, that market is called Tan-A and the ramen aisle is 50 feet long, both sides, floor to ceiling, and is.... awesome...

There is all kinds of delicious stuff you can get in an Asian market that you won't find in the average grocery store in the USA.  And if you're lucky your town will not only have one or two "Asian" markets, but a Korean market, a Japanese market, etc.  To bring this back a little closer to the original thread topic among other wonderful things you may find some pretty awesome chips or chip-like snacks.

Personally, I'm fond of the rice crackers with seaweed. They taste better that they sound, I promise you.

I buy Utz. 6.5 gallon metal cans of chips.  i use an old one for dip. You can buy Utz direct at utzsnacks.com

cptjeff: jw1987: Chicken & Waffles chips tasted like bouillon cubes

There might be a reason for that- they probably were flavored with cheap bouillon, the type that doesn't involve actual chicken in any way. Along with 'maple' syrup powdered extract.

They should've just cut a deal with KFC and used all their leftover frying oil to cook the chips.

illannoyin: cptjeff: spunkymunky: They're not Old Bay flavored. They're "Crab Chips". Utz can't afford to license the Old Bay name.

Whatever. It's Maryland crab seasoning. Old Bay and seasonings like it were traditional Chesapeake Bay crab seasonings before they started putting it into cans and shipping it across the US. Old Bay is just a genericized trademark. They didn't invent the seasoning.

Either way, it makes a strange potato chip.

I was addicted to the Utz crab chip when I was in the Army at Aberdeen proving ground. De-licious!

Also...

[www.cinemasnacks.co.uk image 600x600]

Bring these to the US and they will be the best selling chip ever.

I would buy a bag (or two).

Even Lays wouldn't be cruel enough to do that. Their conscience would force them to at least buy used oil from Bojangles.

spunkymunky: cptjeff: ciberido: ShawnDoc: azmoviez: I call bullshiat on this one.  No one I know preferred that flavor and all the buzz was on Chicken and Waffles.

Yeah, for novelty factor.  I don't know anyone who actually ate one and wanted more.  They were disgusting.

I was at a D&D game and someone brought a bag of each flavor.  We had a kind of taste-test or study.  I ate more than one of the chicken and waffles.   They weren't BAD exactly, just --- odd.  But overall they were my lest favorite of the four flavors we had to experiment with.

Try the Utz Old Bay ones. If you want odd, those qualify.

But really, I'm a simple guy. Give me Salt and Vinegar, and I'm happy.

They're not Old Bay flavored. They're "Crab Chips". Utz can't afford to license the Old Bay name.
I do wish they'd bring back the Jalapeno Doritos 3D chips. farking amazing. Spent many a night in college nomming those and PB&J sammiches and playing Mortal Kombat while stoned.

Ahh, to relive the glory days for a night...

Herr's has the Old Bay license.

Cerebral Knievel: Popcorn Johnny: pxlboy: Pringles

Now you've done it, here come 200 posts about how "Pringles aren't chips".

why would there be an argument? Pringles are made from dried potato meal and corn and mechanically formed while a potato chip is a.. well a chip.. made by slicing a potato razor then and frying it.
they are "crisps" not "chips"..

the only argument that I could ever see holding any kind of weight in this discussion is that what we in the US call chips, the folks in the UK call crisps..  while using the terms "chips" for what we call "fries"

Pringles are to chips as particle board is to wood.

yep! all well said.. I only mentioned that one because it is the BIG one in town, there are all types of markets around here. the snack chips section is awesome as well.. I'm fond of the shrimp rice crisp puffs myself.

even more awesome is the 150 galloin fish tank behind the butcher counter filled with live Talapia, and whn one asks for one it is fished out, cleaned, scaled and butchered right in front of you, wrapped in butcher paper, wieghed and priced out for you all in about a minute.

I tried the Sriracha ones, they were quite good, but also very disappointing. They didn't really taste like Sriracha. And weren't spicy at all.

The chicken and waffles ones were just bizarre. They weren't terrible, but I had no desire to eat another.

Couldn't find the cheesy garlic bread ones though.

I was really hoping Sriracha would win, but of course the most boring, unoriginal flavor won. I'm assuming the contest was rigged from the start though.

2013-05-08 12:18:09 AM

ModernLuddite: To be fair, though, after about 6 chips you will no longer have taste buds that function.

Best chips ever!!!! So glad they got the packages fixed so they could ship via air. The price dropped about 75 cents after that. Only chips I can finish a whole bag in one sitting.

We're talking about Lay's, here.

If you want something other than boring and unoriginal, you get some goddamn local herbs and grated artisanal parmesan from the marker's market and fry some sliced potatoes in peanut oil. You don't stop at 7-11.

I think that was because of weird trademark stuff, the Huy Fong Foods brand can't treadmark Sriracha because it's a location or something so other companies can use the name and try to mimic the hot sauce.

THIS. Y'alll are too lazy to get a little salt and vinegar, or pepper, or BBQ sauce or seasoned salt and put it on your chips? methinks it's time to step off the Rascal and take a few laps around the divan, Lumpy.

THIS

Literally, everyone I know that has tried these chips (at least 20) has picked Sriracha. I don't recall anyone picking the Cheesy Garlic and everyone hated the Chicken and Waffles.

So I guess you just learned a lesson in anecdotal evidence? Or maybe not?

Mmm... Menthol potato chips...

Oak: I tried the Chicken & Waffles first,  I liked the idea.  The execution left something to be desired.  A store would have to be out of a lot of options for me to buy another bag.  The household did finish 'em off, but no one asked me to bring home another.

I found the Sriracha chips to be really disappointing.  I had high hopes: Doritos Tapatio chips are good and genuinely reminiscent of the eponymous sauce.  The Sriracha Lay's were just too subtle.

I couldn't buy the cheesy garlic bread one: the one that intrigued me the least.  That flavor was sold out every time I looked for it, after finishing the other two bags.  This is why I'm not surprised by this result.

Pretty much this was my opinion as well. I'm still surprised Chicken and Waffles didn't win simply for the novelty.

Forced to choose I would have voted for sriracha though it really doesn't taste much like sriracha.

I'd pitch kimchi flavored next go around but I can't imagine many Americans giving that a shot.

Everyone I know liked the Chicken and Waffles. I thought they tasted like day old stale dark meat.

Sriracha tasted like a BBQ type chip.

Out of the three I preferred the Cheesy Garlic Bread but I wouldn't run out to buy them.
