Why would you need $23K to do this?  It seems like any idiot with a copy of Photoshop could chop up a copy of one of his letters and send it to one of the online make a font services.

Didn't read the article, but I'm thinking the same thing?

I did my handwriting just for fun.  Took like 30 minutes.

I did a series of handwriting fonts in 1995 and 1996 based on Jeffrey Dahmer, Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan, among plenty of others. They were called Killerfonts. I think we got a "Yahoo's Best of the Web" banner for our website and maybe a Wired "10Best" rotating anigif.

Yup, the site's still up, and it looks like no one's updated it since our Grand Redesign (with frames and everything!) in 1997.

No, I had nothing to do with the site design.

Don't even need that, there's freeware that does an OK job. And some cheap (under $100) software that does a much better job (that allows you to set kernings and the like).

Hell, even corel draw 5 could do this shiat.

Fonts are, in their most simplistic form, a collection of vectors.

// made fonts, but stopped at 26 characters (lower case and punctuation are boring and my fonts were for page headlines only, why make characters that I was never going to use)?

Huh. Designers do this all the time. I hate what people end up using it for but the typeface Dalliance by Emigre fonts  http://emigre.com/EFfeature.php?di=87 was based on the handwriting on a 1799 German map. Also Jonathan Barnbrook has got some great modern takes on vernacular styles.

Shirley Ujest: Freud's handwriting is illegible.  The guy's Conscribed Lovers font, however, is wonderful.

I tried to read some of the letter he had posted before I remembered that Freud wasn't writing in English. Still, that's seriously bad handwriting, though googling did turn up a few other samples that looked much more readable. Might just be a private jottings versus something other people are going to read thing.

Though that moment reminded me of the tourists I saw at the National Archives puzzling over the Magna Carta, and wondering why they couldn't read it. It's in script, yes, but in a very lovely and clear, albeit small, hand. They got as far as 'maybe it's upside down?' before I stepped in and told them it was in Latin.

I noticed under 'Dead Presidents' you have Ben Franklin

If I'm reading it right, the guy only asked for $1,500. People pledged $23,000.

Creating a font properly is pretty tedious work. You have to adjust the spacing between every combination of letter pairs and punctuation. He's going to do multiple languages too. Software makes it easier, of course, but it still takes work and patience. But some people are font crazy, as evidenced by the enthusiastic pledging.

So, back to the thread... I'm surprised there's even a "free font" button on the site, but it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't work. Truth be told, I haven't had anything to do with the workings of Killer Fonts since 1998. Most of the fonts were decent, but not spectacular, and I tried to make sure they had reasonably complete glyph sets (for 1996 requirements). The guy who had me do them really didn't pay all that well, and he kinda dropped off the face of the Earth after a while. He was disappointed that selling digital IP wasn't the motherlode he expected it to be.

Yes, I know, Ben Franklin is in "Dead Presidents", but that's because he's on the $100 bill. Or something. The web layout wasn't my bag. My role was digging through all sorts of "true crime" books and ferreting out handwriting samples. Fun fact: Helen Keller used a template with rectangles cut into a piece of board in order to give herself bearings for making the lettershapes. That's why they're all squarish. Amazing woman, I wish we could get some kind of idea of how her brain ordered things like lettershapes without the two main sensory channels available. Also: you want horrible handwriting, Beethoven's was absolutely illegible. And Billy the Kid had impressive penmanship for a Wild West Outlaw.

Tell you what, folks, you email me in the next 24 hours and I'll send you a free copy of Dahmer Bits. EIP.

It's a certain mentality, definitely. I was the first guy I knew to have a Wacom tablet, that saved me a lot of grief. But if you're in to fonts you want to make them as usable as possible, so that means creating "Ü" as well as "b" and "¶" as well as "X".

So, how exactly does kickstarter work in this situation?  He only "needed" $1,500 to get this off the ground.  So what happens with the $20,000+ left over? Does he get to keep it and blow it on ale and whores?  Or is there some obligation to use it productively in support of his project?
