It's easy to pick up and it has a good learning curve. That's why it's popular.

I don't really like it as a tower defense game.  I prefer it as a "haha look at those hilarious sunflowers dancing around" sorta game.  I played through the tower defense bit once, got a kick out of all the different plants and zombies.  Then I played the extra games because those were creative too.  As for re-play value, the only real thing I played more than once (or twice) is vasebreaker endless.

I'm guessing it's the cute factor. Look at Angry Birds. It's just one of many Crush the Castle clones but stick in a bunch of stupid little birds and piggies and suddenly it's proclaimed the greatest game in the history of ever.

Most tower defense games don't have Elton John zombies. The game is fun and has a lot of personality, which is why it is so popular. It's just like how Angry Birds is so much more loved than Crush the Castle because it is so much more cute and funny.

I played Crush the Castle to see what the fuss was about, and honestly it is a pretty dull game compared to Angry Birds.

PvZ's slow unlocking of defense plant structures, new enemy types, and enviornments make sure every single level is a different experience.

It is insanely clever while also being simple to understand, and has a nice gentle learning curve.

It also helps that, like most popcap games, it is very satisfying to play.

I consider myself one of teh hardcorez PC gamers but I loved PvZ when it came out.  Best tower defense game I've played.  One of the best values for money of that era (besides the Orange Box)

I dunno, I think the cute factor probably plays a role.  Crush the Castle is pretty bare-bones graphically, at least as I can remember, but ultimately the gameplay is pretty similar to Angry Birds otherwise.  That said maybe I'm just boring because I only ever do crosswords on my phone as my casual "gaming" and occasionally play KSP on my computer.

Agreed. I actually prefer the "small box" games that BigFishGames puts out like the Popcap games. Occasionally you find neat oddball titles. PvZ is one, "Mr. Smith's Graveyard Shift" is another. Bookworm and Peggle also fit this description.

Unfortunately, as of late, it seems the small box games are suffering from the same "Get it out now, we don't care if it has a half-finished interface so that later on in the game the graphics overlay the continue button so you can't even properly win the game. Get it out now so we can make the dollars!"

/like music, video games are much better when produced independently

My only problem with Plants vs. Zombies was that the entire game was a tutorial. At no point could you just drop into a game and play.

Which was okay the first time through. Then when they gave the game away for free on the apple store and I played it on my phone, I had to play the entire farking thing as if I had no idea what was going on.

I wish there was a "I am not an idiot, and don't really care if I lose, just let me play for fark's sake" mode.

//This problem exists in a lot of modern games.

1. Unlike a lot of tower defense games, the harder levels didn't depend on putting the right tower in the right place at the right moment in the game. That is, levels could be beat with a variety of strategies.

2. As a result of 1, you could play through the game using different strategies, only certain towers, etc., enhancing it's replay value.

3. Each level has unique characteristics which forces you to adapt your strategy level to level, so it's not like you're playing the same game over and over again.

Is anyone not expecting this to be riddled with micro transactions and at the same time charging full price for the game.

2013-05-07 08:49:53 PM
I loved Plants versus Zombies so much that I'm holding out hope that the sequel will be equally as fun and entertaining.

There's nothing wrong with "re-" making a classic game genre, and doing an awesome job at it.  I was particularly fond of this game because it combines two of my favorite things in this world.  I'm a plant freak hobbyist and I happen to appreciate the zombie genre in all of its manifestations.  But theme aside, it was just good ole fashioned fun.

Really, I'd love to be a contributor to the PvZ universe.  I have had so many great ideas for improvements and tweaks over the years ... far too many to list.  Everything from characters, to plants, to zombies to gameplay.  I just hope I get to see some of them in the sequel.

Time to replay the original and pull out my copy of Zombies Ate my Neighbors.

You will be required to have an internet connection 24/7 even when not playing the game.
