FTFM. Didn't want to seem ambiguous, there.

Even Rush Limbaugh isn't immune to market forces.  he's working for people who will slit throats for a 2% rise in market share and he's costing them a couple million bucks every time he mouths off on the air.  how long do you think he'll last like that?  greed is greed and Limbaugh is hurting the pocketbooks of very rich and greedy people.  ideology be damned, they'll boot his ass out and replace him with a temp in no time flat.

So do you generally condemn people for their demons, or just the ones whose ideals are not yours?

Did you ever think that continued success in that medical field might one day help millions?  Even if it doesn't, its up to you to cast punishment, eh Jehovah?

Why waste energy hating some blowhard radio host because you don't vote like he does?

Why don't you use that energy helping people?

But I guess spouting your group-think hatred toward some mouthpiece of your perceived enemy is helping?

I posted this in the Spock V Spock thread, but hey, its still on my clipboard, so why not?

Just because a bunch of sycophantic old racists and woman-haters will continue to tune him in religiously until the day they're dead doesn't mean he's profitable if all the good advertising is (rightly) scared shiatless of his racist, misogynistic claptrap.

It is not the number of listeners he has that has ever concerned me.  It has always been a small fraction of Americans, and his resonance with the base (who you have described accurately above is the sole reason for his prominence.

What does concern me is the absolute level of idiocy, ignorance, stupidity, and fear and hatred of one's fellow man that  it takes to be a fan of this asshole at all.  I don't care if five people in this country listen to him, that's five shiatstains on the ass of this country too much.

I don't blame Limbaugh at all.  He keeps the controversy money coming.  What I do blame is their Clear Channel tactics when it comes to music stations.  Half the time, the live DJ (on the occasion that they're live and not pre-recorded) barely has anything to do and songs are robo-announced (and don't get me started on their uber-generic, shiatty playlists).  They're one step away from going full-robo and just using syndicated morning shows during the drives.  I've got friends in Cumulus-owned stations, and they can't wait to jump ship.  They've single-handedly damaged stations and DJs that've been institutions since before I was born faster than the mp3 sharing did to the music industry copyright trolls.

F*ck Cumulus in the a*s.

//yeah, I hold a grudge. So?

2013-05-07 09:11:53 PM
Clarification: Cumulus doesn't own Rush's program. They have individual station contracts with the syndicator, Premier Networks. Clear Channel bought Premier a while back so they could get Rush. They are the ones paying his $400 Million salary. Many of the present Rush Limbaugh stations in the Cumulus chain were carrying Rush when Cumulus absorbed Citadel.

Here's the rub: Billing is down for Rush, but he is the cornerstone for those top-tier conservative talk stations. If Rush goes to a competitor, their entire line-up suffers, and whichever station gets him gets his ratings and his halo effect as the 'trusted right-wing' information source. Whatever Cumeless does, they take a hit.

It's been more than 20 years since Rush went national. His arc is on the decline. His audience is aging out of the 24-54 demo. He had a good run, and can carry on for a while longer on sheer momentum, but for many observers the main reaction to all this is BWAA--HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!

2013-05-07 09:20:41 PM

EngineerAU: Rush doesn't do his show for free. Cumulus could put on other programming that attracted a much smaller audience but end up ahead financially several ways. First is that they wouldn't have to pay Rush money for his show, which likely is a very large expense. Other programming could be found for much less. The second is that other programming might have less or even no built in advertising. Cumulus doesn't make money on ads Rush sells, only on ads they sell. If Rush takes 20 minute per hour for his commercials, leaving Cumulus with 10 minutes for their commercials, programming that allows them to run 25 minutes of commercials could make up for the smaller audience. And the third way is by carrying programming that doesn't have a large boycott against it, they'd have a wider range of companies they could sell advertising space to.

The thing is, the next innovative and compelling radio program that is created by the Cumulus brain trust will be their first.

Time and again they buy up stations whose owners in many cases made them into institutions with advertisers kicking in the doors - virtual licenses to print money thanks to heavy local commitment. And Cumulus guts them. Every farking time. Too expensive, you know. Then they wonder why the ratings and sales numbers are in the shiatter and reason that it must be they're spending too much on talent. And who needs an experienced sales staff anyway? We'll handle that from corporate. Then they wonder why the sales numbers are in the shiatter and reason that it must be they're spending too much...the ciiiiiircle of faaaaailll...

2013-05-07 09:29:35 PM
Interestingly enough, the only reason Rush is still around is that the younger, liberal age group has abandoned radio...leaving the only market left to be the angry old Republican folk.

So here's to you, libs, for your contribution to unforseen consequences. Maybe if there's was a daily radio show that talked about stealing music, or how to live in your parent's basement for eternity, you'd be rid of Rush forever.

I was a young teen in Sacramento when he first started as an AM radio loudmouth. I ignored him.  If I could see into the future, if I'd somehow sabotaged him...where would I be now?  Where would public discourse be now if he never had a part in forming it?  I never thought that white noise jerkoff that I heard in the background while searching for something to listen to back then would amount to anything.

I'm sorry, America, that I didn't set up some plot to ruin him back then, before the monster came to fruition.

2013-05-07 10:07:31 PM
Rush was long regarded as bulletproof.  However, as others have stated, that industry is run by folks who will change formats at the drop of a hat.  A more telling statistic is the number of AM stations that have gone to all sports talk or all comedy.  Talk radio as a format is on the decline.  These guys can read the tea leaves.  It is a known fact that talk radio listeners tend to gravitate toward one station when they have a choice.  If they aren't listening to Rush they probably aren't listening to the other voices on that station either.  Market forces my friends.  Republicans are supposed to understand how that stuff works.

2013-05-07 10:28:34 PM
It's bizarre to me how different talk radio contracts are to recording contracts.  From what I understand, Rush essentially gets paid for everything and has zero costs, while someone like Prince under a traditional recording deal would essentially get paid for almost nothing, but have to come up with all expenses out of pocket.

2013-05-08 12:00:39 AM
A professor once told me that he didn't want to retire because statistically, people are more likely to die after retiring.

So I'd support an early retirement for Rush.

Who's pro censorship?  Nobody's for censorship here.  It's not censorship for a company to decide someone isn't pulling their weight.

Glenn Beck's Career as well as Rush's were hurt by organized campaigns to boycott advertisers and let them know what they were indirectly supporting by advertising during his show.  Glenn Beck and Rush hurt themselves further by doubling down on the ultra conservative BS that doesn't play outside of an increasingly shrinking and aging section of the country.  Very similar to Fox News.  High ratings means nothing to advertisers, the real customers, when the only people that listen to your program or watch the network are old as dirt.

Rush, Glenn, and the Fox News heads won't be in the poor house anytime soon, but they're going to have to find new ways to market themselves.  Beck's the only one that's moved that way with his new network and his traveling show.  We'll see what happens to the others.

You mean not making as much as you used to make but still more than anybody else?  You need to think long term, not next quarter.

Rush doesn't do his show for free. Cumulus could put on other programming that attracted a much smaller audience but end up ahead financially several ways. tl;dr - gross and net are not the same thing

Radio time and syndication is done by barter....so Cumulus pays zero to air Rush ....they make money by selling local ads. Rush and Premiere (who syndicates Rush ) make money off of ad sales to the syndicator and the stations must air ads with show

Cumulus will lose money because few talkers have the ratings like Limbaugh....and a good local host will cost a lot of money.....of course the station picking up Limbaugh will now be making more money

Limbaugh will win this fight...he has better options
