Whatever happens, the future for Cumulus looks cloudy.

As soon as his rate of advertiser alienation exceeds his net income from advertiser pick-ups, Cumulus Media will find out.  Until then... he's a winner in their book, and his audience, while old, is a spendy one for all manner of boner pills, gold, last-minute gifts for the missus and identity theft protection.

They'll be OK, they're used to high pressure situations.

If he says the party is on the wrong course, expect for the party to re-adjust eventually to his course.

He was doing commercials for a tractor company on a major affiliate the other day.

You can't tell me the boycott hasn't hurt.

Being able to listen is not a requirement for Rush Limbaugh.

No he got the implants.  They work, so good for him.

As far as advertisers go, I do know this from my own work day: "national" (Home Depot, Midas, what have you) commercials that get scheduled on our (and other companies' stations) often come with a note to NOT air them inside "controversial" programming.  They cite Rush, Beck, Stern, etc.  The list is kind of obvious, and not exclusive to him.

The Dominican Republic doesn't have any dedicated talk radio stations. Perhaps he should relocate there?

And just think of the young, nubile, brown skinned intern boys he could hire.

That must be why the article at the top of the page is about Cumulus singling out Limbaugh's idiotic commentary as a major factor in the significant declines in advertising revenue at the company....

He has more listeners than any other show. Just because a bunch of sycophantic old racists and woman-haters will continue to tune him in religiously until the day they're dead doesn't mean he's profitable if all the good advertising is (rightly) scared shiatless of his racist, misogynistic claptrap.

You can have three million racist idiots to advertise to every day, but it doesn't do you any good if three million normal people find them revolting enough to avoid your product over its association with them.

Free Republic, World Net Daily, Red State, Stormfront, Infowars, etc... My guess is they're mostly bored senior citizens who are trying to catch up on all the internet trolling/flaming they wish they could have done as teenagers.

Here's a scary thought....

What if he actually did leave the airwaves....and someone *worse* took his place?

I mean, he has his audience...but for the most part he's a joke.  A big fat, racist, mysogynistic , drug-addled JOKE....and even members of the his beloved party don't give him that much credence these days.

What if it was someone with....(shudder)....credibility?

We had a list like that when I would help out the traffic dept (not that kinda traffic). Makes sense that no big client would want their commercial attached to certain programs.

Rush doesn't do his show for free. Cumulus could put on other programming that attracted a much smaller audience but end up ahead financially several ways. First is that they wouldn't have to pay Rush money for his show, which likely is a very large expense. Other programming could be found for much less. The second is that other programming might have less or even no built in advertising. Cumulus doesn't make money on ads Rush sells, only on ads they sell. If Rush takes 20 minute per hour for his commercials, leaving Cumulus with 10 minutes for their commercials, programming that allows them to run 25 minutes of commercials could make up for the smaller audience. And the third way is by carrying programming that doesn't have a large boycott against it, they'd have a wider range of companies they could sell advertising space to.

tl;dr - gross and net are not the same thing

Think about it a minute.

Rushie was unable to purchase an NFL team.

But this guy?

Limbaugh himself admitted as much:

"When you look at a ... show that is by far number 1, and they're still running penile enhancement ads, what's happening is that mainstream media buyers are sending money elsewhere, trying to harm them.  Well, penile, take your pick, the Ronco Veg-o-matic, you know--while McDonald's and Coke and Meineke are everywhere else.

These are things we had to overcome on this pro--we have to fight that battle every day here anyway.  Cause these little sniveling jerks are out there trying to scare advertisers, still goes on."

Problem is it's still making money. Yes it could be making more money if Limbaugh hadn't made some ill advised comments but its making, say 3 million instead of 5. Cumulus is going to drive off the 3 million because it's CEO is pissed it isn't the 5.

I still am shocked that Clear Channel signed him to an 8 year, $400 million contract back in 2008. When I first read that, I thought they must have mistakenly added an extra zero to that dollar amount.

Long term, Rush is guaranteed to say something ever dumber. But I suppose there aren't many advertisers left to lose.

"Dickey's talk stations underperform talk stations owned by other operators in generating revenue by a substantial margin. It's not a single show issue... it's a failure of the entire station."

Can't it be both?

He had coclear implants.  They're not a miracle, and they do help a lot of profoundly deaf people hear.  When I was in college about 15 years ago, I worked for a doctor who helped pioneer the surgery.

What Rush didn't tell anyone is that one of the side-effects of oxycodone abuse is that the small bones in the ear disolve, which is WHY he went deaf in the first place.

I feel that Rush is one of the few people alive today who's passing would be a net benefit for our country. I'm not wishing death on the man or anything like that, but when he kicks the bucket, we'll probably all be better off because of it. It doesn't feel good to think that, I'm just being honest about it.

Unfortunately, some other douche will likely pick up right where he left off. Oh well. That's life, I guess.

So do you generally condemn people for their demons, or just the ones whose ideals are not yours?

Did you ever think that continued success in that medical field might one day help millions?  Even if it doesn't, its up to you to cast punishment, eh Jehovah?

Why waste energy hating some blowhard radio host because you don't vote like he does?

Why don't you use that energy helping people?

But I guess spouting your group-think hatred toward some mouthpiece of your perceived enemy is helping?
