So, just curious...who thinks these guys are as dumb as the kid from Into The Wild?

Better prepared? worse idea? just unlucky?

I'm curious what people think.

Personally...I've got a soft spot for people who die in unique or entertaining ways.

I do, they sound better prepared, but the idea was just stupid.  Rock climbing an off limits active volcano just about pegs my "Bad Idea" meter.  I get the adventure of mountain and rock  climbing, I get the desire to do it in exotic locals, but there are many many places in the world do that where the mountain isn't in any danger of blowing up.

/same age as the "Into the Wild" kid, I managed to survive my early 20s.

As someone with a weird fascination with lava, I could totally see me checking out like this one day.

And the moral of this story is.... Don't climb an active volcano dipshiats...

Photos have been released of two of the victims.  One was last heard to have shouted,  "TAKE ME TO THE VOLCANO!"

I climbed Mt Saint Helens back in 2004 before it went "active" again shortly after, so I'm getting a kick out of these stories...

FTFA: He said rocks "as big as a living room" came raining down, killing and injuring members of his group, some of whom were in critical condition.

Why were people in critical condition climbing a volcano?

Just a hiccup in the "Man vs Nature: The Road to Victory" saga.

I'll take Nature for $10, but it has to cover the spread.

Why were they surprised?  "Gee, while climbing a VOLCANO, I didn't think that it might erupt."

Call me nuts, but I generally avoid climbing huge rumbling mountains that could cough up massive boulders, deadly ash clouds or lakes of molten rock on a whim.

Guess I'm just a big chicken....

I am with you, sort of. I want my remains interred into a lava flow if at all possible. There is something poetic to me about my last move being able to touch some of the newest land on earth, both after I have left and before any who I leave behind will get the chance. First explorer to melt foot on a truly unique terrain in death, and part of the land forevermore.

Apparently the thing kicks off about once every ten years, so I don't think they were being too foolish. They're still dead, though.
Then again, "Crushed by a boulder the size of your living room!" probably looks pretty awesome in the obit.

When they get to the afterlife and find there's a hierarchy determined by how cool your death was, they're still going to end up sweeping the floors with the ninnies who can't remember, because they went peacefully in their sleep.

Gosh, the world is now short five more overpaid, underworked white idiots.  Nanoviolin.
