When I was in high school, and this wasn't THAT long ago, late 90s, some kid brought in one of those dummy grenades you can get from any army surplus store.  You know the kind that have been drilled out and the explosives removed.  The security guard grabbed it, said "Oh cool, one of those dummy grenades" and gave it back to him.  The times, they are a'changin'

After being given the opportunity to experience the breadth, depth, and quality of "Opposing Views" as near-daily links on Fark for the past couple of months, I'd just like to say that my honest opinion is that the entire site, its writers, its concept, and its execution are wholly without merit, quality, interest, value, or worth, and that if everyone responsible for creating, writing for, producing, editing, linking, and otherwise causing it to continue its existence were to stop tomorrow and never again think of doing anything remotely like it, absolutely nothing of value would be lost.

I can't count the times I was stabbed with a pencil/pen. In Catholic schools. The early 90s. No one cared about it, and we healed.

And no one said a thing.

Apparently it's different if you make gun noises while doing it. Sheesh.

"Kids don't think about 'Cowboys and Indians' anymore, they think about drive-by shootings and murders", thanks to the hand-wringing, pants-wetting stupidity of people like Bethanne Bradshaw. If we didn't obsess over being unable to protect kids from the unforeseeable, we could let them live normal lives.

To paraphrase, those who would give up happiness for security will achieve neither.

A pencil is a weapon when it is held under-hand and swung down in a forceful, stabbing motion.

Not when it is used in an imaginary circumstance as an imaginary death dealing device.

I come down hard on any student pretending to shoot a gun in class. I do not report it any hire up unless the student is also defiant; I have never had to.

It's a greater disservice to the child who has been suspended.  If you use the same psycho-babble that these people use you could easily make the case that you're stifling the creativity of this child and causing him undue trauma for punishing him for something that he does naturally.  Couple that with the stigma and certain derision he will face from his classmates and teachers and you're essentially creating a recipe for an anti-social teenager.  And we all know how these people feel about the dangers of being anti-social.  We're pretty farked.  We've reached the point where our educators lack common sense and intelligence.

Well, stop voting the way you do, putting those people in charge of your schools, wetting yourselves when other people educate themselves differently, in a less silly politically correct fashion and you'll probably do better and have less drama in your lives. I find it endlessly amusing the hand-wringing that goes on. Your boys, for the most part, like "vroom-vroom" things. It's okay. Your girls may also like it. Conversely, your boy may want to dress like Daphne. He looks like a farking idiot in the pictures and so do you for letting him. If the parents had any stones, they'd have told the school to fark themselves and pointed and laughed at the idiocy while merrily driving away.

If they were playing then it WASN"T threatening.  Bethanne, you are pretty high on a list of what is wrong with America today.  Your utter lack of common sense & apparent zero understanding of how young boys think & play should be enough to permanently bar you from the education profession.  Sadly, your actions here today will probably put you in line for a promotion from similar clueless idiots.

We have GOT to take the education system back from the idiots such as this. Several generations brought up under this nonsense could be enough to destroy any hint of rational thought from our future descendants along with the willingness to quietly accept any unfair punishment handed out

Obviously the kid should have got more time in suspension, if anything.

Guns shoot lead. Pencils have lead in the middle. Pencils are only two or 3 steps removed from being a gun. And what if that kid had thrown the pencil? The lead tipped pencil could have caused serious injury or even killed the other kid

When I was in middle school, a lot of us did this 'tardish thing where we would snap our fingers with a coin between them to fling them at each other (they'd really sting if you got good at it - I never did get the hang of it, but I went home with welts from more skilled marksmen on many occasions).

During one of these epic battles, one kid (a willing participant BTW, not just an innocent casualty) took a million-to-one shot to the eye, ended up with a scratched cornea that got infected; he fully recovered in the end, but his "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" PTA-mom wrote a scathing letter to the school board about how her son was "NEARLY BLINDED!" by their gross negligence in allowing children to roam the halls unchecked with change in their pockets (the kid actually brought in a copy of the letter to show us, it was surreal - I specifically remember the phrase "inherent destructive capabilities of ANY metallic object").  I didn't actually get to see their response, but I'm told they were not exactly receptive of her logic.

I'm surpised they don't suspend students for building paper airplanes, because terrorists.

A paper airplane is a weapon when thrown at a tower of books in a threatening way and boom noises are made.

Apparently none taught the kid that you're supposed to hold the pencil with the eraser pointing AWAY from you when shooting. The eraser is the silencer.

/ Education system, WTF happened to you? You used to be more fun.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Further evidence that only absolute idiots aspire to a career as a school administrator in education.

FTFY. There was an idiot teacher involved too.

MichiganFTL: snocone: MaritimeGirl: The parents should get together and have every kid go to school with a pencil and point them at the teachers while making the "pew pew pew" noises. Then they'd have to suspend the entire school. Repeat indefinitely until this idiocy is stopped.

If a parent showed up with a pencil and pointed it at the teacher, would the principal call the cops?

If it was an Assault Pencil, I would hope so.

Was it black with an extended eraser and a grip?

No, a pencil is a weapon when you stab somebody with it.

Stinkyy: AverageAmericanGuy: Paul Marshall, the boy's dad, thinks the school overreacted. "When I asked him about it, he said, 'Well I was being a Marine and the other guy was being the bad guy.' It's as simple as that."

Oh, well. If he was pretending to be one of America's Heroes™ . That makes it okay, then.

Right, right, if he were playing gay vaccuum cleaner or DUI illegal alien, that'd make you happy.  Nobody here feels bad for you that you can't do 20 push-ups, pussy.  Back in your hole.

I think this is my favorite Fark thread of the year.

Pocket Ninja: After being given the opportunity to experience the breadth, depth, and quality of "Opposing Views" as near-daily links on Fark for the past couple of months, I'd just like to say that my honest opinion is that the entire site, its writers, its concept, and its execution are wholly without merit, quality, interest, value, or worth, and that if everyone responsible for creating, writing for, producing, editing, linking, and otherwise causing it to continue its existence were to stop tomorrow and never again think of doing anything remotely like it, absolutely nothing of value would be lost.

You sure get nervous and anxious outside your echo chambers, don't you?

The only way to deal with these zero tolerance quislings is to treat them like the dumb animals they are.  Look them square in they eye and say, "NO!"  Whatever administration-speak they try to hand you, just keep saying, "NO!" ...like you would a dog that just pooped on the rug.  If there is a newspaper handy, swat them on the nose with it.

"Sir, we are suspending your son for holding a pencil and making 'pew pew pew' noises."  NO!

"A pencil is a weapon when it is pointed at someone in a threatening way and gun noises are made."   NO!

If they are going to act like dumb animals, then treat them like dumb animals.

Don't they have to be GOOD gun sounds? I mean.. is "pew pew" acceptable?  What if it's a ray gun "ZAP!" or an acid spitting "PSHH!"?

If he said "Boom!" It could be a bomb threat too; a long thin pipe bomb.   I'm guessing that Fozzy the Bear noises would have to be acceptable, "Wacka Wacka"

What about if he did the Gran Turino thing, and just made a gun-shape using his fingers and pretended to fire it?  Clint Eastwood did it without sound.. I wonder if it would have been PG if he'd not done that at all, or NC 17 if he'd actually "pew pew'd?"

What if they emulated a machine gun noise... is that worse?  Assault rifle

/Finger banging FTW

I remember watching Scooby Doo, The Biskitts, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Donky Kong. By the time the news was on I was in bed.
