I hope SC tells Sanford to take a hike.

I bet every republican who votes for Sanford was railing about the Lewinsky scandal in the 90s.

firefly212: I hope she wins. As an (actual) fiscal conservative, I think it stinks to high heaven that the TEA party and others are glorifying the guy who stole hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to spend on visiting his South American mistress as the "fiscal conservative" choice. For what he spent on government funded farking, he could have hired a couple more teachers so kids could have a better education. That doesn't demonstrate responsibility or conservatisim in any way.

Republicans these days never fail to disappoint me.  As soon as I think they can't get any crazier, BOOM, they elect Cruz.  I'm sure they'll sink to the occasion again and elect Sanford.

Either Sanford wins and is a giant oozing zit on the face of the  "values voters" party for a looong time, or the GOP loses a seat in an R+10 district to Stephen Colbert's sister.   I'm cool either way

If you want to know how farked our politics are, you only need to look at this.

The disgraced shiathead has a very good chance of winning over a good candidate - because hey, at least he's the right party.

It shouldn't, but it still amazes me when Republicans will vote like sheep for anyone or anything that is declared "conservative".

The issue of using state funds, honor, integrity, family... none of it matters as long as you are a "conservative".

/recycling what gets said to justify voting in crooked Dems

You and your imaginary liberals are boring.

This was a loss for everyone.

Unhip1: That's not a winning state of affairs for Colbert-Busch.

Nobody thinks she'll keep her seat past one term.
We're all just kind of stunned Sanford got enough support to get past telling other people he was thinking of running for Congress. In a sane world, he would eventually figure out they were laughing at him, not with him, and slink back into the shadows, far from politics.
Instead, he has a very real shot at a seat despite using state money to boink an Argentinian prostitute while AWOL from his job as governor a few years ago and repeatedly violating his divorce settlement very recently.
Somehow Colbert-Busch is villified for bringing up the former and his wife was villified for bringing up the latter. There is serious talk that a contempt of court charge from divorce proceedings 25 years ago could cost Colbert-Busch the election.
How.... HOW? The double standard is amazing to behold all by itself, but people are ignoring he stole state funds to have an affair. Yet he's the fiscal conservative, family values candidate...

dickfreckle: Nabb1: dickfreckle: I'm a USC grad (the original acronym, BTW). But I don't feel I can even discuss South Carolina anymore.

It's a beautiful state.  It's just over-populated with nut-jobs in some areas.  There are plenty of nice folks, there, too, but they don't seem to be active in politics.

I know it is, and we've talked about this before. Some parts of SC are heaven on Earth. And then there is the rest of it.

I'm not from there, but my dad was routinely placed at the Sumter AFB. That's how I ended up being a Gamecock. I will never give up my years in Charleston, and even parts of Columbia.

But I will always view the state with suspicion.

Without a doubt.  My parents still live in the upstate, and I just could not bring myself to move back there after I finished law school.

I would have gone back to Charleston in a split second, though.  The low country of SC is God's country.  (In the figure of speech sense, not the evangelical, Bible-thumping, narrow-minded fundamentalist Southern Baptist sense.  Those folks are all over the upstate, not so much in and around Charleston.)

This man broke so many bull crap you conservatives keep spouting about, seriously SC. I hope you guys aren't idiots. But I'm not that optimistic.

ginandbacon: Otherwise Just Fine: I'm expecting him to win, but it's my district so I'll do my part and vote against him. I'm not proud to live in redneckistan.

Why? She's ahead in the polls and has been running a great campaign so far.

The most recent polls have it at a dead heat, and it's an R+10 district.  Advantage: spends-taxpayer-money-on-his-mistress-in-Argentina-and-debates-posters guy

It could be a situation like we had in New Orleans when Joseph Cao upset embattled Bill Jefferson in a run-off a few years ago (which, BTW, was pushed back because Hurricane Gustav hit the week of the primary and pushed it back to the general election in November.  Turnout for the run-off was miniscule, and even Jefferson admitted his supporters were probably too dumb to know there was another vote after the one in November).  Sanford may lose to Colbert-Bush, but she'll be keeping the seat warm for whatever Republican topples her on the next go around.  Cao - a Vietnamese American and a Republican - had no chance at re-election from the moment he pulled off the upset.
