BlastYoBoots: SC Farkers, please, PLEASE don't let Mark unannounced-taxpayer-adultery-international-vacation Sanford get elected. I don't want to live in a country that'd reelect him.

He'd actually be more of an asset to the Democrats if he gets elected. Yet another example of conservative insincerity in their much vaunted "moral values."

Anthony Weiner flirts with a girl by showing a picture of his clothed weiner on the internets--he gets pressured to leave his seat and the Democratic Party.

Mark Sanford finances his extramarital, extraterritorial affair from taxpayer funds--conservatives celebrate him and elect him to Congress as the candidate of moral values and fiscal responsibility.

Hell, whether or not he wins, the fact that the race is even close gives weight the case that the large majority of conservatives lack any real core values.

Stone Meadow: Maybe so, but the DNC would happily take her victory today and try to defend it next year.

Has the DNC invested a lot in her victory? I'd be surprised. Even if she wins, to retain her seat she'll have to vote R most of the time. Sanford is more valuable to Democrats to hold out as proof of conservative hypocrisy on--well, basically everything.

He's probably going to farking win because SC has a lot of stupid farking mouthbreathers.

Points granted, but neither party EVAR regrets not taking a seat from the other...no matter how temporarily.

Your_Midnight_Man: So if Sandford DID use taxpayer money to go see his mistress, how is that not a legal issue?

Because South Carolina political ethics laws are a motherfarking joke.
If you pinky-swear that you're sorry and promise to pay it back, you're in the clear.

The state legislature is currently trying to pass a reform of the ethics laws.  Their new plan actually decriminalizes EVERYTHING with 2 exceptions: taking an outright bribe, or releasing information about an investigation into an ethics violation.

dickfreckle: I'm a USC grad (the original acronym, BTW). But I don't feel I can even discuss South Carolina anymore.

My GF is a Gamecock (and her Dad taught economics there), her family is simultaneously proud and disgusted with SC on a regular basis.

Well.  As I've said before, they do have core values, but they've warped a bit from the original:

1. No brown people outside of the fields
2. No broads outside of the kitchen
3. No teh ghey
4. Science is religion and religion is science

Sanford is neither brown nor broad nor teh ghey, I haven't seen him wearing any white lab coats, and he doesn't support any policies that would violate the core values, so he is the Family Values candidate.

2013-05-07 01:50:23 PM

factoryconnection: My district, and I'm betting that Sanford will win, if only to prove that you need to do nothing good and can be a proven-unethical waster of taxpayer dollars and still be considered a "values" candidate that will "look out for the taxypayer."

He is hated and shunned by every SC pol that knows him.  Every veto he ever dropped as governor was quickly overturned... by his own party.  The GOP will have nothing to do with him.

Would it be unreasonable for us to "suffer" through a moderate Democrat for 19 months over this has-been?  No, because the people in this state legitimately believe that (R) is infallible and (D) means Siberian labor camps.

C'mon, the (D) is clearly for death camps. Seriously, I wish I could vote on this, but alas, I'm in district 6 though my normal polling place is open. Wonder what would happen if I tried to go vote.

God damn Republican voters sure are stupid. Is that a Southern inbreeding thing or just a conservatives-tend-to-be-dumb thing?

Consider this: both of our state's Senators are thought to be DL homosexuals.  Senator Scott, former holder of this SC-1 seat, is black and almost assuredly gay, just on the DL.  Our state can tolerate gayness, just not outness, evidently.

bugontherug: Has the DNC invested a lot in her victory? I'd be surprised. Even if she wins, to retain her seat she'll have to vote R most of the time. Sanford is more valuable to Democrats to hold out as proof of conservative hypocrisy on--well, basically everything.

Pelosi PAC and the DCC put $800,000 into her campaign.  That's pretty significant and probably dwarfs the budgets of every democratic candidate for any office in the entire state in 2012.

2013-05-07 02:34:11 PM

vaakenjab: So what would be a horrible enough offense for Republicans not to nominate someone like this?  Murder?  Genocide? Then again, as long as he said 3 Hail Marys, he's A-OK again.

Having ever agreed with Obama about anything whatsoever. Even a "Yes Mr. President, that is good coffee" would be grounds for exile from the party.

There must be balance in the Force.

Mark Sanford must be the GOP counterpart of Marion Barry.

Well, either that, or it shows that Democrats are easily pressured into abandoning their own people.

I'm going to post with glee after Sanford:
a) gets elected
b) gets put in jail for contempt of court
c) special elections costing a fiscally-conservative state more money

ginandbacon: Why? She's ahead in the polls and has been running a great campaign so far.

Becasue women and minorities should be in politics.

This is South Carolina remember. People actually believe that.
Of coursed to be fair that view isn't isolated to South Carolina.

When an elected official steals from the taxpayers, there should be jail time involved.

If Colbert-Busch wins, Stephen Colbert becomes "connected with the establishment"

Consider this.

Also consider the massive funding blitz Karl Rove used to buy influence with voters. It didn't work in 2012.

If this thread mentions Sanford, even negatively, it's an example of what the election is about: a vote for or against Sanford.

That's not a winning state of affairs for Colbert-Busch.

Unhip1: That's not a winning state of affairs for Colbert-Busch.

Nobody thinks she'll keep her seat past one term.
We're all just kind of stunned Sanford got enough support to get past telling other people he was thinking of running for Congress. In a sane world, he would eventually figure out they were laughing at him, not with him, and slink back into the shadows, far from politics.
Instead, he has a very real shot at a seat despite using state money to boink an Argentinian prostitute while AWOL from his job as governor a few years ago and repeatedly violating his divorce settlement very recently.
Somehow Colbert-Busch is villified for bringing up the former and his wife was villified for bringing up the latter. There is serious talk that a contempt of court charge from divorce proceedings 25 years ago could cost Colbert-Busch the election.
How.... HOW? The double standard is amazing to behold all by itself, but people are ignoring he stole state funds to have an affair. Yet he's the fiscal conservative, family values candidate...

On the flip of that, though, if Sanford wins he could well keep the seat for 20+ years and at least two more mistresses.  There may not be a Senate seat open for him for the rest of his days, but winning tonight means he could settle in for a very long time.

2013-05-07 07:48:12 PM
If Sanford wins, its proof that Republicans have really become THAT STUPID to vote in a man who did a far worse transgression than Bill Clinton getting blown in the Oval Office:  he spent wastefully.

Farking hypocrites.

Well, not that I expected any better from the people of the Lowcountry, but damn if it isn't sad to see.
An embezzling adulterer won on a platform of fiscal conservatism and family values, and all because of an (R).

We are a wretched and pathetic lot.

I too would like to emigrate. It won't get better until the boomers are dead, and they'll have stripped everything of value before they go.

It shouldn't, but it still amazes me when Republicans will vote like sheep for anyone or anything that is declared "conservative".

The issue of using state funds, honor, integrity, family... none of it matters as long as you are a "conservative".

And here is how Sanford won.
A painful ignorance that invents and outright projects its own failing on the opposition. A lackluster but determined crop of charlatans who hoot and holler, rant and rail against some imaginary collective "libs" that exist nowhere in reality.

They've elected an embezzling adulterer, a man who was too busy using state funds to chase Argentinian prostitutes to do his job as governor, and as recently as a few months ago was violating the terms of his divorce agreement, on a platform of fiscal conservatism and family values purely due to the (R) next to his name.

You can't foist that kind of hypocrisy, that kind of cognitive dissonance, onto the fantasy of liberals you keep in your head.
I'd be hard pressed to find a liberal politician who isn't crooked, but this is something else. This is damaging to everyone. This is damaging to everything. It's one thing to break a campaign promise and another to base your entire campaign on a lie.

I expected this, but it's still damn sad to see, and even sadder for the implications.
Colbert-Busch took more flak for divorce proceedings 25 years ago than Sanford took for violating his divorce agreement this farking year. The people around here blamed his ex-wife for being a biatch. They blamed his ex-wife, whom, as a matter of public record, he left the country to cheat on. The level of misogyny is staggering.

fark, why am I even bothering with you. You're either a troll or too stupid to bother with, and neither of them entertaining enough to keep around.

Oh come off of it. You're not even being a good partisan hack when you go so ridiculously over the top with the butthurt. I stated exactly what has been stated by other Farkers who identify as liberal. It's not delusional when it's what your ilk proudly proclaim.

He was having an affair with an Argentinian reporter who IIRC he is still dating. He's not a great guy. I'm not saying otherwise but you've shown you're incapable of dealing with what happened by overdramatizing and "enhancing" the situation.

Sergeant Grumbles: I'd be hard pressed to find a liberal politician who isn't crooked, but this is something else. This is damaging to everyone. This is damaging to everything. It's one thing to break a campaign promise and another to base your entire campaign on a lie.

Dude, get some stitches in your butthole because this is beyond butthurt. You may be prolapsing.

Sergeant Grumbles: The level of misogyny is staggering.

You use that line to pick up dates?

Let's rewind. You called his mistress a "prostitute". His mistress is a divorced mother of two who holds a college degree in Poli Sci and speaks four languages. She works professionally as a translator and reporter. And this is who you brand a "prostitute"? Dude, you're the one calling women names trying to slut shame them. You can't pull the misogyny card when you're the one calling women names.

Sergeant Grumbles: fark, why am I even bothering with you. You're either a troll or too stupid to bother with, and neither of them entertaining enough to keep around.

Because your rectal prolapse demands you return.
