Mugato: Damn that movie sucked.

Laura Linney was on Fresh Air yesterday talking about her show Big C, they brought up Congo and apparently she spent the entire filming of that movie just walking around talking to the rest of the crew trying to find out what they did and how they did it. So apparently part of the blame can be put on her for distracting the rest of the crew and not just focusing on her farking job.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Like a Zoo You Can Get Killed At

The Democratic Republic of Congo has endured decades of brutal civil war, in which rebel forces have adopted the gruesome practices of raping women with machetes, decapitating babies and even, they.. they just.. with their teeth, they... Jesus F**king Christ you don't want to know what goes on here.

Just tossing in (again) the comment that comparing child mortality in different countries is extremely difficult with different definitions of live births in each country:

However, the method of calculating IMR often varies widely between countries, and is based on how they define a live birth and how many premature infants are born in the country. Infant mortality rates can be flawed depending on a nations' live birth criterion, vital registration system, and reporting practices....Many countries, however, including certain European states and Japan, only count as live births cases where an infant breathes at birth, which makes their reported IMR numbers somewhat lower and raises their rates of perinatal mortality.

I don't find that surprising at all. The lack of prenatal care in the us, especially among black women, is embarrassing. No health care brings high fetal mortality rates, no surprise there.

"Joshua Giraffe was born in a zoo He lived there, too, for two years And a half he hasn't had a bath My mommy doesn't lick me Even when I'm sticky from Candy floss, candy apples, popcorn Soft drinks, jelly beans and gumdrops And there must be something better Than living in this cage But I'm really not to sure Because I'm really short of age

Joshua Giraffe was feeling kind of sad Things were going bad How little of life he had Wasting away with no room to play Trapped in a zoo with buffalo, too So he went next door to the elephant And asked him what to do I'm wasting away with no room to play I'm trapped in a zoom with buffalo, too The elephant was very old and gray And he had a huge balloon bottom He said, Never fear Joshua A vision will appear

That night a dream came to Joshua and Joshua saw animals, like crazy monkeys And a whole pile of Hippypotostropasuses And flitty moths, moths size twelve And sleazy lizards And a tribe of nasty saviars But Joshua wasn't afraid Because he sang himself this song

Nothing can go wrong-o I'm in the Congo Nothing can go wrong-o I'm in the Congo Nothing can go wrong-o I'm in the Congo Nothing can go wrong-o I'm in the Congo Nothing can go wrong-o I'm in the Congo Nothing can go wrong-o I'm in the Congo

Even in his dream he knew He'd never get away Not even for a day Then a peanut hit him on the nose Joshua Giraffe was back in the zoo What could he do Awakened from his dream He'd never be the same Because of what he'd seen He'd seen Alligators, crocodiles, tree sloth Anacondas, cobras and Large winged moths Orangatangs, baboons eating grapes Gibbons, rude mandrills and just plain apes

But Joshua was lucky He had some special friends And that day they went to the zoo But he was up tight so they waited till the night And they chopped his cage in two He discovered he could fly and He soared into the sky with them Wrapped around his neck And they haven't come back yet So if you see them get a net

That's right, they haven't come back yet But when they do, they say they are Going to free all the animals from their cages No matter how new or modern Even some pets, too So if on your way home today You happen to find

A baboon basking in the balcony Or a lion licking a lemon in the lobby Or a python perched in the pantry A wildebeest in the W.C With a turtle twirling in your tub Don't be afraid, just say your a friend Of their friend

Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua Joshua Giraffe, Joshua, Joshua, woo hoo"

Abortion is not counted in the survey, thus probably why china is not mentioned.

Also, a significant amount of the imbalance of men to women in east asia is actually dude to spontaneous miscarriages of female fetuses due to the high prevalence of hep b there, believe it or not.

But yes, sadly, there is female infanticide in india, partially due to a lack of ability to find out the gender of a fetus by sonogram, due to laws against it. Partially due to limited resources among poor families, etc, etc

Gambia's a tiny country in west africa, ifn I remember correctly.

In many countries, govts aren't the ones who do studies. Its probably not too hard to do surveys of indivs and hospitals, despite lack of govt funding.

I wouldn't want to be the one doing the surveying in the drc.

After going through half the thread before seeing your link, I thought it was going to have to be me that injects this lovely ear-worm into everyone's dome.  I'm surprised that your comment has received no love (naught but from me).

<CSB>
Back in the days of Napster (when I was in college - with time to "putz around on free internet" with awesome free dialup...) my brother dumped off a CD with ~140 mislabeled/terribly labeled tunes.  Labeled as "Mumu Cho - Bombo Song" from some children's sing-along album, it quickly became a house favorite but also tormented us because it took so damn long for me to figure out who it was...
</CSB>

Anyway, the image association when anybody mentions "Congo" or "Bongo" has changed from the Commodore 64 monkey from the 1st of our kind to a bunch of South American guerrillas with AKs sitting around a fire but bobbing their heads rhythmically to this song!

"THE Ukraine" is not smiled upon by us Ukes.  The damned Russkies would constantly refer to it with the article because it was their desire to paint it as a region of Russia as opposed to its own independent country.  If the sovereign nation were a region of their own country, maybe others would look away from various oppressions, genocides, and whatnot and unfortunately I'd say that it worked...

It's a bit complicated. Before coming to a solid conclusion about the US healthcare system, it would be best to review how these statistics are calculated:

Many countries, including the United States, Sweden and Germany, count an infant exhibiting any sign of life as alive, no matter the month of gestation or the size, but according to United States some other countries differ in these practices. . . .

Per capital health care cost is a terrible indicator of health care quality. Not everyone can afford to boot out entire floors of a hospital for their surrogate to give birth to their Blue baby.
