(Huffington Post)   Vanessa Williams says winning Miss America hurt her career. Which is odd, since it's done wonders for all the other winners like... um... that blonde girl and, um... you know, the other blonde girl, and um   (huffingtonpost.com) divider line 71

This probably did more than the Miss America, although, fortunately for her there is other stuff in this issue that made it illegal to own anyway.

The Pet of the Month was a 15 or 16 year old Traci Lords right before her porn debut.  It makes owning that issue possession of child pornography.

You sure it was that and not the Boy George article?

Her career is still going on strong, she's just hoarding its climax, not to be used until the ultimate juncture.

She was a few years older than me, but shantell smith from Oklahoma I knew really well.

Have no idea what she is doing now.

Shantell is a white girls name.

"Hurt her career" ... which wouldn't exist without her being Miss America.

She's still hot.

Not a given, and she claims otherwise.

It certainly seems like winners who get their title taken away get far more famous than the ones that keep it.  Like Miss Teen Delaware..

Did she have maps and such like?

2013-05-07 09:34:55 AM
Does anyone know the origin of that cover photo?  The photos in the magazine were displayed unauthorized of her, so, I doubt she actually posed with Burns specifically for the cover, I am guessing they stole that as well from some other source?   Maybe a USO show or something?

I post this all the time but it's my one CSB. I went to school with Vanessa at Syracuse University when she was just starting out in pageants (she won MIss Syracuse while we were in a class together). Even with her pageant helmet hairstyle she was astoundingly beautiful.

That would only work as a joke if Vanessa Williams sang that song, and she didn't.  Bette Midler did.

Which just goes to show our definition of "child" pornography needs to be seriously reworked.

Well, her appearance in Penthouse ruined my wrist.  I remember being 13 at the time and thinking that pictorial of her and the other chick were about the best thing in the world.

/ Strangely, don't recall Traci Lords being in that issue at all.

As a kid, I would go to Shively Records, and they would (probably illegally) sell you "flats" of album art for a dime.  I had this one on my bedroom wall:

Going old school and remembering watching afternoon reruns of "Barnaby Jones" at my great grandma's house in the early 80s I can mention Lee Merriweather, but, that is about it.  Few ever had a pinnacle higher than winning the pageant.

2013-05-07 10:27:15 AM
I remember when I was kid I would watch the Miss America pageants because it fed into that warped Princess fetishizing (but I really would start tuning out after the talent portion because I was more into that part of the pageant anyway.) At some point my dad mentioned that there's no point in these shows and there's seldom anyone who ever really does anything of value after they've won. Then he paused and said "Except Vanessa Williams. When she sang I assumed a record deal was being drawn up immediately and that I had witnessed a star being born."

Then something something, said it was unfortunate about the photos setting her back but at least he was right about recognizing the honest to god talent. She was also the only reason why he and I got sucked into Ugly Betty.

Phyllis George, Miss America 1971, was our (Kentucky) First Lady when I was a kid.  She and VW are about the only two that are top-of-mind for me.

Yep, I was about 14 and had that issue for about as long as I could still open the pages. I think that was about a month.

I believe they were taken from a appearance they did together in Atlantic city. The issue came out just when I started to realize girls didn't have cooties and if they did I wouldn't mind catching some.

I assume you meant to reply to my post about the cover photo with Burns.  Interesting to know, wonder if there is an original of that photo floating around.

All of the Miss America's that I am aware did anything "notable" in media/politics/etc other than win MA:

1945         Bess Myerson
1955         Lee Meriwether
1959         Mary Ann Mobley
1961         Nancy Fleming       (Did some minor TV work, and was married to Jim Lange)
1971         Phyllis George
1973         Terry Meeuwsen   (Co-host of The 700 Club)
1984         Vanessa Williams
1989         Gretchen Carlson
1990         Debbye Turner      (Works at CBS News)

I could have probably included a few other more current ones that did some minor things, but, these are the major ones who went on to notable media careers.
