So long hotmail, we forgot you still existed.

2013-05-07 08:17:24 AM
I have to admit, I still use hotmail as one of my two primary personal emails.  I've had that thing for twelve years.

2013-05-07 08:21:45 AM
Nice headline, but you can still use a hotmail address and log in through Hotmail.com
So there is still that.

FLMountainMan: I have to admit, I still use hotmail as one of my two primary personal emails.  I've had that thing for twelve years.

My hotmail account was my first "professional" email address (the others being laughably not professional). I still use that address constantly.

So do I have to change my XBOX Live address or what?

I use it as my BS registrations account.  If I know I'm going to get tons of spam from registering to a site I use that address.  Of course I haven't had to do that for quite some time so I check it maybe twice a month now.  Still think it's a good idea to have a dummy account though.

All hail my junkmail account! Long live the king of spam collection!

Might not be a bad idea to transfer your account over, but doubt that they just shut off all access altogether. Transferring emails address for nearly everything you access can be a pain, but a necessary pain sometimes.

I'm selling my @hotmail.com email address to some hipster. Though it might take another 10 years.

2013-05-07 08:53:21 AM
For years I used my hotmail address as my junk account and Gmail for "real" stuff. Not the GMail account is junk and I've created an Outlook account for "real" stuff. The cycle continues.

Yeah, this.
Do I have to, like, do anything about it? I had this account for years now and it's my main email address for pretty much everything.

Or do I have to set up a new outlook address?

Similar situation here.

Not that I get much spam in gmail, it's just that I get alot of junk (*cough* facebook *cough) related stuff in there.

/cutiepie91[nospam-﹫-backwards]kooltuo*com just doesn't have the same lack of professionalism

Ahhh, I remember that awkward silence between me and my pal when I mentioned I have an email at hotmail, he thought I'm saying "hotmale."

So long Hotmail, my first personal email account.

2013-05-07 10:31:14 AM
yahoo is my BS account
Hotmail is my friend email account
Gmail is my professional email account.

Both Hotmail and Gmail accounts are tied to my phone. Yahoo I dont care about.

I started mine is 1996, before they were bought by Microsoft. It was my first email account that didn't end in .edu. Back then, it looked good not to have an @aol.com address. If I go back, I've still got archived some romantic emails my wife and I sent each other back in 1998 when we first started dating after we met at work, along with my first Amazon and Newegg orders.

2013-05-07 10:43:08 AM
Wow...I'm amazed I'm not the only one using it solely for junk mail. If there is a store I know I want coupons from, or just some random site I'll buy something from once, I use Hotmail.
Friends get one gmail account, professional-type stuff gets another.

I've had that Hotmail account since the early 00's: I don't even know if I *could* recall every site I use that on to update them.

2013-05-07 10:47:39 AM
But that's the email I use for Fark. Now what do I do?

From the article:
"Our belief is that as people start using the new experience, they will come to love it even more than they loved Hotmail," says Craddock.

LOL, nobody loves Hotmail we use it because it is cheap and easy, like a fat chick at closing time.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: So do I have to change my XBOX Live address or what?

Probably not.  Hotmail hasn't been around for a while now.  It was rebranded "Live Mail" this is in all likelihood a merging of services and/or a rebrand from "Live Mail" to "Outlook".

It takes next to no effort to tell a mail server it's now responsible for domains x & y as well as z and set the routing as appropriate so your old address(es) will most likely be grandfathered in to the new system.  You just shut down the ability to create @hotmail.com and @live.com addresses.

2013-05-07 11:23:48 AM
Still have a hotmail for BS.

It's a small thing but it still pisses me off that I have to type in hotmail to login.  At gmail just my user name and password.

2013-05-07 11:31:11 AM
I understand changing the face and look of a site, but why go to the effort to change the domain name?

2013-05-07 11:32:44 AM
I use Hotmail as my primary email.

The new Outlook format is a little annoying.

2013-05-07 11:35:47 AM
This reminded me that I still have a Hotmail account, so I logged in to check what was in it. It was 150% spam.

Keep using it for Fark, because it's not going away?

I use hotmail as my primary email account. Since no one uses email anymore, it's just for online ordering confirmations really.  It went through a dark age of spam filtering but I now get maybe 1-2 spams a month that don't get caught.  I really enjoyed when you could set the filter to 'only accept email from address book and delete the rest'. I don't think they allow that now but it made for a clean inbox.

Krieghund: I use Hotmail as my primary email.

The new format does seem annoying. Especially putting the subject line up top in 24 point font so that when I email my accountant about a tax extension it looks like the headline for a declaration of war.

One of my first e-mail addresses was a Hotmail account. Then Gmail came along. I only use the Hotmail one now to sign up for stuff, like porn sites.

Less professional that Hotmail. AOL perhaps? That's the only less professional one I can think off.

I've never had a problem with spam coming to my Hotmail account. It's pretty simple: Don't give out your e-mail address to sketchy sites.

The only mail I get in my Gmail account is spam from Google+ wondering why I never visit.

That's too bad. I'll miss all the terrible spammers that were too lazy to modernize in time..

My very first e-mail address uses a very common name, got it in 1996 and doesn't have numbers at the end  (almost like being able to get john_smith[nospam-﹫-backwards]oohay*com). I still use it. I got a hotmail soon afterwards, but it's been defunct for a few years now.

I've had a hotmail account since 1997? Possibly have had the account I've had now since 1997, if not I've had it from sometime between 1997-2000. Pretty sure I've had it since 1997 though. Would check but the "show registration date" thingy is gone with the Outlook.com upgrade. Lame. Mostly used it as my primary account until I upgraded to Gmail in 2005. After that I kept it alive as my xbox account.

Hotmail was my first e-mail account. I tried Yahoo, I tried Rocketmail, but stuck with Hotmail through it all.

2013-05-07 02:28:35 PM
I haven't logged in, in probably 7-8 years. I don't remember the password. And my backup account was an old at&t dialup account. Shrug. All it ever got was spam. gmail has been fine since beta.

I am completely baffled by the name change. It's just throwing away brand equity. Like if Honda decided to rename the civic or something.

Really, what's the point? Does anyone think "outlook" is going to make it more popular? Did a bunch of young dudes come in and decide hotmail was "too old" despite being universally recognized?

Hotmail has recently seemed downmarket and unprofessional (especially since it sounds like Hot Male), with kind of an @aol.com vibe, while Outlook is what most people are used to using at work. For an email address you'd want to put on a resume @outlook.com just looks 1000% better.

I've heard lots of horror stories about Microsoft's internal politics.  It's likely that the whole thing is an attempt by the Office team to further strengthen its stranglehold on the rest of the company.

Sounds crazy, but then again, the Office team got the Courier tablet killed simply because version 1.0 wouldn't run Office, and in doing so gave Apple the opportunity to take a dominant position in the tablet market.

Sneakemail.  With the added bonus of if you set it up right, you know where the spam is coming from, and can shut it out accordingly.

2013-05-07 02:57:10 PM
I still us one of my hotmails as a primary (two accounts technically isn't primary, but you get the idea), and Gmail as my alt

Then i have a yahoo that is straight up spam.

Just FYI, DO NOT download the Outlook.com app in the Android market.  It sucks ass.

I registered my last name as a domain name so my email address is firstname at lastname dot com.  As a bonus I can use anything at lastname dot com so I can make up unique addresses every time I have to give my email to a company, so I can track spam and see exactly who gave out my details.

Same here.  I was able to get my actual (rather common) name so I've kept it for use when I do job changes or whatever.
