'The more I give away the wealthier I feel,' he said. 'For everything I "gave up", so much more was returned. The trappings of fame and fortune are exactly that - a trapping. It's called the spoils of success for a reason.'

Doesn't really sound like a loser to me.

Damn. Didn't realize my ex was posting pics on the internet again.

I saw a video piece on the guy a while back.

He's definitely got his shiat together. Not a loser.

/I'm not talking out of my arse

Was gonna bash the guy but I can't, seems genuine, the article didn't even name his documentary seems that should have been the first thing they should have mentioned.

it must be nice having enough money to buy a new iMac that's even skinnier WITHOUT a built in superdrive

The only thing that doesn't make sense is taking the minimum salary when it's possible to command much bigger paychecks. If you're getting paid more, then you have more to give away.

I don't think he's that stupid. He's most likely got a deal where the rest of the salary of millions goes straight to charity.

So he gets brain damage that makes him sensitive to light and sound, which somehow equates to giving away most of his money.  Yeah, nothing else happened to his brain at all and he's perfectly fine.

Yet another trailer that gives away too much of the story.

2013-05-07 08:59:25 AM
Good for him. There's a point where having too much money is detrimental to your enjoyment of life. It's better to have a relatively modest yet fulfilling life than a huge fortune that cripples you. Sure, you can get that Ferrari, but what's the point?

2013-05-07 09:16:24 AM
Good on him, although I do imagine 1,000 sq ft in Malibu is still a pretty penny, no?

Not trying to diminish the story at all, I'm legitimately curious as to how much that would run.

His documentary, "I Am" is available in DVD on Netflix.

Speak for yourself.  I still want the huge fortune, Ferrari, and to be knee-deep in hookers and blow.  What's the point of being rich if you can't enjoy the little things.

You missed the point. It's not the Ferrari that is bad for you, but if you want to be the next Charlie Sheen, whatever.

He doesn't need all that stuff. The only thing he needs is the ashtray. Not all that other stuff. Just this ashtray... And this paddle game. - The ashtray and the paddle game and that's all he needs... And this remote control. - The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all he needs... And these matches. - The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control, and the paddle ball... And this lamp. - The ashtray, this paddle game, and the remote control, and the lamp, and that's all he needs. And that's all he needs too. He doesn't need one other thing, not one... he needs the paddle game and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches for sure. Well, what are you looking at? What do you think, he's some kind of a jerk or something?

One day, we'll all have that much stuff, because 3D printing. It's really obvious once you think about it.

I was using hyperbole to make a point.  If you want to live modestly on a smaller income...if that makes you happy...all the power to you.  If I want to make more and have the ability to do so, that's my choice.  Point is, I'm not going to judge anyone their choice to live life how they see fit so long as their choices don't affect me personally.

Oh look, once again it's someone that has found "enlightenment" by giving up all their worldly possessions safe in the knowledge that at any time they could have it all back if they so desired.  How awe inspiring.

**yawn**

I was cynical of millionaires who find "enlightenment" by giving up all their worldly possessions safe in the knowledge that at any time they could have it all back if they so desired before being cynical of millionaires who find "enlightenment" by giving up all their worldly possessions safe in the knowledge that at any time they could have it all back if they so desired became too mainstream.

I live in a mobile home. I could afford a lot more, but I like the simplicity. I give away most of my excess cash to charities and whatnot.
Were I to win the lottery, I wouldn't move out. All that would change is that I would quit my job and concentrate on my hobbies.
So yeah, I like that guy.

Probably quite a bit.  I saw this guy interviewed a couple of years back and looked up the trailer park in question online.  The website for the trailer park had a bunch of information for the park tenants, one of the bullet points on park access said something about the tenants' responsibilities in making sure to obtain proper access for their own landscapers and maids, so I think this isn't really your standard run of the mill trailer park.

In fact, this seems to be a newer piece on the place:

But now, in his first fictional movie in seven years - a remake of the French film The Intouchables - he will take home only $218,361.

save your tears he's doing OK

Seems like a pretty decent guy. Its hard to dislike a dude who donates large amounts of money to a homeless shelter.

That's our point. He's doing okay with decent money. The "cynicals" here are talking as if he's now a leper on the street and how they can't live like that.
