Anybody but me think this sounds completely wrong somehow?

You officially forfeit all future birthdays if you get kidnapped, duh.

Cpl.D: AverageAmericanGuy: Confabulat: Cpl.D: We need to demand some sort of law that makes the shiat Sylvia Browne does illegal as fark.  Maybe some sort of restitution law when they're shown to be wrong.  Hit that farking blob in her pocketbook.

A better educated population that knows how to recognize that psychics are frauds might help too.

You're fighting 6000 years of history. Either you accept that some people will believe anything, or you keep attacking the waves in the ocean.

Fark the waves.

Maybe it'll help.  Maybe it won't.  Tar and feather the biatch anyway.  The media outlets love reporting on these things.  Maybe they'll talk about this one.  If not, at worse I lose a minute of my time.

I'm all for such a law. I must have edited it out of my original post.

Accept people will believe it => outlaw it
Fight the ocean => try to educate people

I don't always agree with everything you say, Tats (you're a bit on the conservative side for me), but I fully agree with and endorse this statement. Sylvia Browne should be forced to feel all of the pain she's caused the bereaved.

This is the article the kidnapper wrote in 2004, in a local newspaper, about how the effect the kidnappings were having on the neighbourhood.

I cringed so much when I read this did not finish reading it, especially where he talks about sex offenders.

Jesus Christ!

This is a rare instance where I support the death penalty.. or perhaps torture.

Good for the girls and their parents.. I hope there are people in place to keep the douchebag vulture media FAR AWAY from them so they can get the help they need..

powhound: PacificaFitz: How fast did that 911 operator want to get off the damn phone?

Isn't it SOP for 911 dispatchers to stay on the phone as long as possible, provided that the person calling is not in immediate danger?

depends on the situation. Not every call warrants staying on the phone. With medical calls our agency will ask if the caller is alone ( you'd be surprised how many sick/hurt people call for themselves when someone else is home) and if they want to stay on the phone. Lower priority calls, no. Every other call it just depends, I can't give a solid answer. When in doubt I ask if they want to keep the line open.

I don't blame the dispatcher for not knowing who she is....I don't remember all our higher profile missing people but I would damn sure be googling or muting myself to ask if the name rings a bell (especially if said dispatcher isn't from the area originally). I'm just trying to give the benefit of the doubt.

But she did sound like an assclown when she kept saying to speak with pd when they get there. Otherwise she really didn't sound heartless or dismissive...to me. At first she did because she probably thought she was speaking to a crazy person but her tune changes once it seems to click this is probably legit.

Again, not making excuses but it is a different train of thought from that perspective.

Yeah that's the thing, 99 out of 100 times someone calls and says 'I'm this famous missing person', that person is either crazy or high as fark.

That's why the 911 operator was reacting that way at first, and things got more serious when it became clear it was a real thing.

http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2013/05/06/three- lo ng-missing-women-found-alive-in-west-side-home

Strangely enough, reports indicate that Ariel Castro's son, Anthony Castro, penned an article in 2004 for the Plain Press on the girls' disappearances. He was a Bowling Green State University journalism student at the time, and he used "Ariel Castro" as a byline for the story. News originally spread that the suspect himself had written the article.

So Tats was wrong again?

Oh well.

Figures.

I'm have no idea why you're having a tone with me. I was pointing out a possibility that it might not be a coincidence his son wrote the story, I didn't say it was good, bad, or anything else. A bit touchy today, maybe?

Anyway, since you seem to have knowledge that the son actually lived upstairs in the same house, or for that matter ever visited the house, I'd like to hear what your sources are.

I used to watch Montel when Sylvia Browne was on.  I was pretty young and was totally mesmerized by her.  Now I see the power of suggestion on already fragile people just clinging to any hope or answer and I want to punch the woman in the face.  How dare she.  That poor mother.  I so wish she could have seen her daughter alive.

I kind of hope she believes it. It makes her perhaps one quarter of one percent less vile if she really believes she's getting some sort of revelation. Of course, she's taking money for it regardless. Unfortunately, if the other cases she's gotten spectacularly wrong didn't finish things for her, I doubt this one will.

2013-05-07 03:37:35 AM
Glad this saga has somewhat of a happy ending, but I'm noticing a lot of off-the-cuff reactions and assumptions, especially regarding the 2004 article written by the kidnapper's son (not the kidnapper!).

At least skim through the comments section before jumping on that bandwagon. Only takes a couple clicks to realize it's not as it seems.

I'm interested in hearing more about the whole situation, though (who was in on it, living conditions, etc).

fark Sylvia Browne, now and forever.

This article outlines a study done on Sylvia. It investigates 115 missing persons cases where she made predictions. Only 25 cases (this is before the Berry case, obviously) have been since resolved. Of those 25, you might reason that she'd be able to - if she was just randomly guessing - get a few right. She got zero right.

Zero out of 25.

I think-- I HOPE-- This is the one that f♥cks her shiat up for good. It's bad enough she keeps getting such horrible misses, but when she basically tells a woman to give up all hope, and the woman  does, and it leads to her death before she can be reunited with her missing daughter, it's weapons-grade irresponsible and the newspapers and TV news will catch up with it this time, and they'll skewer the biatch hard.

And she f♥cking deserves it.

What sucks is that even if she is finally discredited and disgraced, she's still a millionaire because of all the books she sold, TV appearances she made, and personal consultations she did. She lied her way to a fortune.

I know how to do cold reading, and I'm a damned good actor... I was often tempted to do what she does, but I couldn't really do it. It takes complete and utter gutter slime to prey on grieving family and loved ones. Sylvia Browne is a sub-human piece of filth, and it makes me sick that she's rich because of it.

Well, she may actually be a psychic:

So her "predictions" may be of some value as, til today, they are 100% wrong!
