I was originally going to submit the IGN article about this, but figured someone had likely beaten me to it. It's a sad day for Star Wars games, but you gotta figure it was going to work out like that considering that EA put out the SW mmo.

I know they paid a king's ransom for the franchise but I have a feeling that in an effort for Disney to profit off their investment, my interest in anything Star Wars related will burn out from merchandising overkill in a short couple of years.  As a kid I was fine with C-3PO's, but I don't know that I'm ready to do it all over again.

The real question is how much input DIsney will have but yes EA could fark these franchises up.

Disney is a money grubbing merchandise whore. EA's MO of multiple DLC's for silly bullshiat cosmetic changes, powerful bonus items and extra story chapters dovetails nicely into Disney's practice of bleeding a franchise for every penny they can. Even if the games are outstanding, and given the quality of EA's games lately I'm not willing to put money on that, they will tack on 20 different DLC packs and they'll do their damnedest to shoehorn in some form of multiplayer with special items that can be purchased to "enhance multiplayer gameplay" to the point where you eventually realize you paid well over $100 on a freaking video game, if you didn't already spend that much on the "super special pre-order edition with exclusive special pre-order edition items and bonus soundtrack, making of the game book, collector tin, and more!".

It really depends.  If the focus groups and marketing departments say everything is fine with the intended product... then everything is fine with the intend product (and the reasons why is isn't/didn't sell well is piracy, theft, economics, toothfairies, whatever).

If the focus groups and marketing departments say something is wrong with the intended product, then Disney will administer a curb-stomp or two.

But unless you are in the focus groups or the marketing departments of the respective companies, your opinion doesn't matter; only your credit card number does.

Well I figured that was all Lucas and his greed, and since he's out of the picture now I didn't figure it was worth mentioning.

When disney bought SW I knew I wasn't going to have anything to do with new movies, etc. I knew it would be more of the same rehashing and re-releasing that's been the standard for hollywood for years, and the reason I see maybe one movie a year in theaters, if that. When they closed LucasArts I was sad, but not surprised. I haven't bought a SW game in ages, 'cause most of the recent stuff was already what I figure the new movies would be: tired cash cow milking.

Star Wars was a big part of my childhood, and I revisit the good sometimes, but I'd moved on to other things, generally. I was willing to leave it at that, no REAL hard feelings to disney, even.

BUT HANDING IT TO THOSE ANUS LICKING CUM DUMPSTERS AT EA TO RAPE?!

Better for it to have died and been buried than to have it's rotting corpse dug up and anally violated until it tears by the massive dickspurts that run that mindless, sniveling, morally bankrupt excuse for a company. I was letting Star Wars go, but now I'm ANGRY.

What little chance there ever was of my buying a disney SW product is completely gone.

Hope some disney execs get a hot poker shoved through the dickhole.

I'm glad, they own studios that have made some of the better Star Wars games.  LucasArts has been shiatting up the license for so long, it's not like they could do it worse.  Besides, who else would it go to?  Better them than Activision or Ubisoft, though Assassin's Creed 1313 would've been fun.

13 years? In the last 13 years we've had Star wars Galaxies, although that got royally screwed later on, the Knights of the Old Republic series, the Lego Star Wars games which were actually kind of entertaining, The Force Unleashed which wasn't quite as bad IMO as many folks thought. And really the MMO is actually pretty good as a solo game, even if it is a horrible MMO.

2013-05-06 08:57:46 PM
I will likely never see any of these games as EA will refuse to sell them through Steam.

I had to install Origin to play Mass Effect 3 but now I've finished it (and I expect EA is to blame for its rushed ending and the fact that it took 20 minutes to log in to it's servers every time I wanted to play the single player campaign) I have removed it and do not intend to re-install it. I can't think of another series which I need to complete so acquiring (and ruining) decent game studios won't help them get any more of my money.

/Bought ME3 on disc because it was the exact same price as on Origin, I figure that this way EA got less of a cut as part of that money went to the retailer and another part was spent on transport and physical production costs.

I don't get why everyone is down on the sale of star wars. No way disney could be worse for star wars  than lucas already has been.

and the games lucasarts put out were crap. their best games were all licensed to other companies to make. in house games sucked worse than jar jar

Disney will milk a successful film with merchandising and then dozens of forgettable straight-to-dvd sequels but when they decide to make a movie (for theatrical release) they do it properly. Movies from Disney and its subsidiaries are the only ones I can go to nowadays with confidence that the characters will feel real and the story arc will be satisfying.

I cant really talk trash about Disney... the star wars rides in the parks are freaking amazing.

In the last ten years, yes.    Before that though there were a ton of hits:
-Dark Forces 1 + 2 (plus the JK expansion)
-X-Wing and its sequel Alliance
-Tie Fighter
-Rogue Squadron series
-Shadows of the Empire (though this was Rare wasn't it?)
-Rebel Assault

Lucasarts had already turned into mostly a publisher before the Disney sale and shutdown.   This EA thing doesn't change much (and actually brings some hope with DICE and Bioware involved.)

Saddest thing about this. Lucasarts probably did deserve to be blown up, but Disney had a chance to do something really special, getting some decent devs/publishers to put a fresh spin on old classic IP's. But clearly the only thing Disney cares about here is dollar signs, which of course EA can deliver in spades.

I'm sure someone at EA right now is already working on a new Battlefront title that's just a skin replacement of Battlefield.

Except that EA won't allow them the freedom to make a decent game. It will need to have 'features' which require a permanent connection to EA servers and there will be endless DLC, half of which should have been included in the original purchase.

/However, the DLC may save us from X-Wing 2014, X-Wing 2015, X-Wing 2016......

Since that's what Battlefront is, I really hope so.  Battlefront with Frostbite 2.0 would be fantastic.

How could I judge anyone who has overcome George Lucas's very thorough attempts to erase the holiday special from history and actually seen it.

Years ago I managed to find a copy online in Real Video format. The blurry pixelation was probably a mercy.  Having to install real player was not.

SW games have stank for quite awhile already.

It's not as if EA can add to the aroma in any negative way.
Just too bad Disney didn't keep it in house. The crossover for the infinity game would have been cool.
Seeing as how Infinity will play like Toy Story 3 has me feeling ok. That was a fun game for me and the kid.
