A complete 180 from last year

(hopefully)

2013-05-06 05:08:21 PM
Kicking a lot of ass, is what they're doing.

And considering the injuries the Yanks have faced, I'm ecstatic they're doing as well as they are.

Interesting week:

Red Sox 2-4, swept by Rangers, move up to #1
Rangers 4-2, sweep Red Sox, drop from #1 to #2

2013-05-06 05:10:56 PM
Cheating and a high batting average with balls in play will only get you so far.

I think subby is asking why they're ranked ahead of the Rangers despite having an identical record and getting swept by them over the weekend.  As a Sox fan, I think it's a curious decision and probably made to generate clicks.

2013-05-06 05:16:28 PM
Maybe you should've won four games over the Sox this weekend, Rangers.

Thank you.  The Yankee fan gets it, why can't ESPN? (I kid)

Seriously though, there is no logic that could defend that move.

Hey, Chief Wahoo, how do you feel about the Indians winning six of their last seven and jumping up nine spots in this week's Power Rankings?

I was told last year that power rankings aren't about logic.

So, last week the Red Sox are #3, and the Rangers are #1. The Rangers go 4-2, including a sweep of the Red Sox, who went 2-4... and that allows Boston to somehow jump two spots and overtake Texas?

I know the rankings are BS, but dear Lord that's mind-numbingly stupid.

Sure there is.

The Red Sox have now finished playing the Rangers for the foreseeable future, therefore they are more likely to win more games going forward, justifying them being ranked above the Rangers.

/I didn't say it was GOOD logic...

Don't know your affiliation, but if you characterize being swept as "kicking a lot of ass", then okay. Keep thinking that way.

Typical BSPN & no real surprise.

/Enjoy the pretty much meaningless top spot in the power rankings, Sox fans.
//We Ranger fans will be content with sweeping your ass.

I didn't understand, and I am a Sox fan but it's just ESPN's opinion.  This is a corporation that employs both Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, Both who are perpetually wrong about every subject they attempt to tackle.  I would have the Sox in the top 3 because of their stellar pitching, and even Lackey has been solid thus far.  As for Papi, he is on fire!  I am very impressed that the Yankees are winning without most of their stars and weak pitching.

I'm sure everyone has a method.  I've always viewed it as how each time did in the past week only, or maybe the past few weeks.  Doesn't necessarily reflect the entire year.  They even acknowledge the Red Sox were swept by the Rangers and don't explain why they flip-flopped.

No doubt they are playing well, and should be in the Top 5.  But for the last week, I'd probably put the Cards on top and the Giants at 2 or 3, and Red Sox 4 or so.  And I say that as a Rangers fan.

Cardinals go on a tear after kicking Boggs to the minor-league curb.  Go figure.

When 1 reliever has given up nearly 1/5 or your entire staff's earned runs, it's time for a change.

2013-05-06 05:31:40 PM
As someone who's not much of a baseball fan, but is living in Dallas it still feels good to have at least one team above a .500 win percentage.

See:
The Cowboys .500 for the 2012 season (8-8)
The Mavericks .500 for the 2012 season (41-41)
The Stars .500 for the 2012 season (22-22)

Mediocrity hurts :(

Best part of the most recent episode of NFL Network's Top 10 show, Best Draft Day Moments, was the "Who the Hell is Mel Kiper?" tiff.  Both for the snide remarks of both Kiper and the Colts GM and Trent Dilfer's excellent 90s hair when the Bucs drafted him.

ESPN's power rankings so closely mirror the team's records, I wonder why they even bother.  It's always like that.  They never take much of anything else into account, which makes me wonder why they don't just list the standings for their "power rankings."

**SNIP**

I am very impressed that the Yankees are winning without most of their stars and weak pitching.

Well, they've had a pretty even schedule so far in terms of strength of the opposition. They've played 10 series' so far, with 5 being against teams with winning records & the other 5 against teams that are .500 or below.

Against winning teams, they're 7-8.
Against teams that are .500 or worse, they're 11-4

Basically, they're beating up on the bad teams on their schedule and are nearlyaverage against good teams they've played. And they've won 7 of their last 10, thanks to that 4-game series against the Jays. So there's that.

A) So you really think that the Rangers should be ranked below the Red Sox, even though we just swept them? With a combined score of 16-4?

B) It's coming up at 6:30 EDT, gripey-butt.

Sure, the Rangers swept the Red Sox, but the Rangers were at HOME! If they played those games in Boston, the Sox would have easily won all three games, right?

Giants are underratted...again. Fifth place!? Seriously? With all the come from behind victories, walk-off homers, amazing defensive plays, and perfect relief staff, i'm fairly shocked they aren't #2 or #3....Dodgers are still rated far too high especially after the @ss-kicking they took in SF

Valid argument, I am just happy with them in the top 5. Maybe this staff needed a pitching coach as a Manager.  It seems to working out quite well.  As for The Rangers, they are a team that I never want to Sox to face,  I wish Beltre didn't end up there and would have stayed with Boston.  Oakland is one of those teams that will beat you around as well.  I love baseball season.

I was always surprised that there is more NHL fans here opposed to MLB.

Calm down grasshopper.

The O's just finished their longest road trip of the season.  11 games in 11 days, out West, and went 7-4.  Nothing to worry about except starting pitching.

And, second base.

And, DH.

And Dylan Bundy being shut down with a sore elbow.

Other than that, things are solid.

I will say that I have two friends who moved down here from Boston (well, one's from Nashua, close enough). While I have not been privy to their junk (yet hehehe), I can at least confirm that they are both awesome human beings & have somewhat suppressed my hatred for all Boston sports teams. Hell, I'm even pullin for the Bruins in the playoffs. You can't explain that.

Red Sox still suck. Not as much as the Yankees, though.
