yeah make it more like a mac running Boot Camp. THAT'LL work.

Well, I do think that there's plenty to find frustrating about iPads and iPhones, I'm not sure that making them more like surface is the answer...

MS channels you into poor UI. Apple channels you into annoying UI. Android doesn't channel you, but it's still annoying.

I have yet to find a tablet I like.

I'd like it better if it had MS Office. Or expandable memory. Or an HDMI port. Or any port, really..

why so you could blow something up? like the super bowl??

Well I for one am shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, that a person who's company is in direct competition with Apple would say they don't like Apple products.

I like plenty of them. Just not $600+ like.

thinks that many of its users are "frustrated" because it doesn't come with a physical keyboard and it lacks access to Microsoft Office

You can get a physical keyboard for it. The lack of Microsoft Office is somewhat annoying - it would be nice to be able to work on papers in Word on both my laptop and iPad, but Evernote helps - it's a little kludgy, but it works. If anything, the lack of Office is pushing me towards a MacBook for my next laptop - I can deal with using Pages if it means I can seamlessly switch from the laptop to the iPad.

The only frustration I have had with my iPad was the battery heated up so much at one point that it left scorch marks on the cover - so they gave me a new one that wasn't threatening to set fire to itself, no questions asked.

I don't have a Surface or an iPad. The Win8 UI is really pretty good on a tablet. The only thing I don't like is that the Win8 programs are all simple crap like you would find on an Android or IOS tablet.

Using real programs generally requires you to use the old Windows interface.

If Bill Gates thinks the iPad needs MS Office I wonder who he should talk to about changing that... oh wait that would be him.

Plenty of Bluetooth keyboards out there that will work with my iPad. I have never needed one though.. any doc I create on a mobile device is usually short and not mission critical so the onscreen keyboard is fine

It'll ruin the profile of the iPad, I guess. Plus, a dedicated HDMI out slot would take up more space inside the iPad, which means less space for batteries.

Fanboi-like typing detected

I like expandable memory in my products. I don't like something weighing a ton. I don't like the lack of Flash. I like screens that aren't fingerprint magnets. I like apps that don't crash all the bloody time. I don't like one button to do everything. A menu button is useful. I don't like to be spoon fed "approved" apps, some of which might be good, some of which might be bad. I don't like iTunes, especially when you have more than one profile in a household. I don't like the price for the tablet.

Here's the part where you say "but you don't need to expand your memory and the pad isn't all that heavy and Flash sucks anyhow and you can just wipe off the screen and that's the app's fault and if you can't deal with one button you a retard and the approved apps are way better and iTunes is awesome and you can just logout and login and the price is what you pay for the best!"

iPad is the "best" but the others just suck more.

if they mean a surface pro, then sure. the RT seems to be just pointless. the pro on the other hand is awesome because it does everything a laptop does performance wise when docked, but you can also read a book on the train/bus/crapper like a kindle/ipad

It has to be one of the strangest ad campaigns I've ever seen. The Windows Phone ad shows what their two competitors do well (sharing for Samsung, Siri for Apple) and all they show their phone doing is them scrolling the screen (wow). But that doesn't compare to the tablet ads.

Because an HDMI port would double the thickness of the iPad and not everyone would use it, so it cuts costs and preserves the desired size.

I think they took the Apple idea with iPad (don't tell people how to use it; just give them a product and let them figure out its purpose) way too far. "Hey, it's a tablet, that's all you need to know! Catchy music! Dancing! Won't someone please pay attention to this commercial!!!! Microsoft!!!!"

Don't use one right now, so I might be a bit back dated in my criticism (meaning some of them might have been fixed), but here were my problems with ipad:

1) No flash on the camera - would add about $0.05 extra cost to them. why leave it out? Why bother with a camera if you don't want to bother with a flash?
2) No port of any kind.
3) No expandable memory slot
4) Too damn expensive
5) No flash support
6) No firefox (if I remember correctly, there is no 'find' function on safari)
7) No way to turn off components to save battery
8) And the usual complains about all apple products like too restrictive, treating users like idiots, iTunes and so on

I'm still trying to figure out why I would want to spend so much on what is essential an under powered laptop with no keyboard. What does a tablet offer me at its price point beyond the ability to play Angry Birds?

Uhh I dunno, several sites for my company and clients? My wife has an iPad that I borrow from time to time. I may even wind up reluctantly getting one myself for my photo portfolio. You farking fanbois are all the same: defend the queen at all costs. Apple farking sucks. They suck less than the rest, but for flash, they suck more. Don't tell me what I need. I like my Blackberry Playbook...

Things important to me (YMMV): small enough to fit in my pocket (100% necessary), cheap price (got mine for $200 1.5 years ago, can get larger storage models for $150 now), mini-HDMI out, good enough apps, plays most downloaded video formats perfectly, no 3g data plan needed (tethers to my work BB), no separate physical keyboard needed (tethers to my BB keypad; bonus, can use touchscreen on phone as a trackpad), can sideload BB/android apps

I think an iPad Mini would do alright for me these days, however for what I use it for (watching downloaded tv shows/movies on the subway, reading comics/pdf's/ebooks, taking notes in meetings, the odd game while I'm on the crapper), the price is much too high... plus add the fact I play mostly SNES/Genesis/PS2 games on my tablet, I don't know if the iPad has any good/working emulator apps...

Aside from a browser and itunes, nothing really. If it's not for you then don't buy it.

When I originally bought an iPad I discovered what millions have also discovered - you don't need MS Office. And that is what has Microsoft running scared.

You don't NEED Office, but for those who prefer it on a computer it would sure be nice. If MS made a stripped down version of Office for iOS (basic functions for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint), I'd buy it in a heartbeat. There's other apps that get it done (iCloud support for Pages is decent enough), but when you're sitting at your computer the good old faithful and capable Office is the standard of the world for interoperability and pretty much everything else. Sure, you CAN still use the iWork stuff to do it, but in many ways that isn't as seamless when swapping documents with others. Right now I use Pages for the occasional minor word processing work on the iPad and convert the document over to Word via iCloud when I get back to my computer.

IMO, the biggest problems with tablets and other mobile not-quite-a-computer devices is the biatchyness of the makers. Google doesn't want to play TOO nice with Apple or Microsoft because that might open a door in the future to leave Android behind. Microsoft doesn't want to play TOO nice with Apple or Google because that might open a door in the future to leave Windows behind. Apple doesn't want to... you get the idea. It's a regression from the free and open platforms we've known in the computing world. If you buy into Apple's environment you end up depending heavily on them. Ditto with Microsoft and Google. If you want to use Google Docs, it's going to be a pain in the ass if your phone or tablet isn't Android. Like Office? Hope you like Windows Mobile if you want to take it with you. Go iOS? Hope you like Apple's productivity suite.

This is what happens when software vendors also become hardware vendors. The products play VERY well together when they're all from the same vendor but rather poorly when you mix and match.

Lucky LaRue: Or expandable memory.

This has always been a beef with me. Every Android device I've owned had a microSD slot so I didn't have to constantly shuffle my media and other data to avoid running out of space. It's such a simple farking way to let the consumer have a little more freedom with their device. How would a "fanboy" explain Apple's infinite wisdom in not including the same slot every other manufacturer does?

The adapters aren't cheap (depending on the adapter, anywhere from $30-60ish, IIRC), but they help slim down the packaging of the device. You can get off brand ones but those have iffy experiences. I have the VGA and the HDMI cables for my iOS stuff. Makes it really easy to pop a movie onto a larger screen if I like. They also make presentations from a tablet a breeze- don't need a full size computer, just connect to the display, load the presentation app, and away you go.
