Well, if the Vikes think they have a better punter now, fine.

I still am really happy with all he did speaking up for marriage equality. So good on him.

2013-05-06 01:08:38 PM
I have to think he'll find work. He's still a darn good punter.

2013-05-06 01:18:31 PM
I knew this was going to happen when they drafted a punter, I was just hoping for one more season from him. Kluwe is a great punter and an even greater human being. So long Chris, keep up the good fight.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't "so long and thanks for all the fish" spoken by a dolphin?

SilentStrider: I have to think he'll find work. He's still a darn good punter.

I think he could have a great future as a writer if he works at it.  I've enjoyed reading his material over the years.  He's got a sharp wit.

Peter King talks about this in todays MMQB on the SI site.    He wrote that Kluwe should have a job by July at the very latest--and if not then NFL teams don't want punters who talk about issues.

Ooh, good call.

I'm still inconsolable. The Jags are the one team that I know is not in the market for a punter. On the other hand, if the Titans pick him up, my Magic: The Gathering group is gonna start making field trips to the Nashville gaming stores.

2013-05-06 01:45:17 PM
Damn and here I ordered a Vikings Kluwe jersey last year because he's so awesome as a person.

2013-05-06 01:49:27 PM
Saw this coming when the Vikings picked up a punter in the 5th round.

Younger and cheaper will always win when it comes to his position.

2013-05-06 01:49:32 PM
He was terrible last year.  If he was backed up towards the endzone, you could pretty much count on a 20 yard shank of a punt.

2013-05-06 01:51:01 PM
Still gooey for Kluwe. Come to Pittsburgh, dude!

2013-05-06 01:51:24 PM
I like the dude a lot, but my reaction to seeing his tweet this morning was "meh". He'll be in the NFL for awhile if he wants to be, and he's more than intelligent and savvy enough to make a nice living for himself outside of football should he say "fark it, I'm done" sooner rather than later; and whatever that career change happens to be, I'm sure he'll tweet and write a lot so he'll always be visible.

2013-05-06 01:52:43 PM
If he comes to Buffalo, he's welcome at my gaming table.

2013-05-06 01:53:40 PM
As a Vikings fan, I always liked Kluwe, both for his ability and for his off the field activities. However, I think any MN fan will admit that he was thoroughly mediocre the past two seasons. It's isn't where I wanted the team to go with a 5th round pick, but I'm willing to give the front office some slack after the massive hit with Blair Walsh last year.

2013-05-06 01:58:24 PM
As a Vikings fan, I'm a little sad to see him go, but the team appears to be making the right moves, so I'll hope this is one of them.

2013-05-06 01:59:50 PM
Would be fun to see him replace some of the unthinking meathead commentators on the TV. Don't think any network has the balls to do that, though.

2013-05-06 02:00:12 PM
And he'll still put up more points next season than Christian Ponder does.

2013-05-06 02:07:40 PM
Come to Philly Chris, I'd be proud to have you on the Eagles, it would help erase some of the shame of the felon on a leash we have.

Odd that I'd be excited to get a punter's jersey

2013-05-06 02:08:23 PM
Did some digging on the team rosters.  Throwing out teams with either two punters on the roster and/or a drafted punter, we have:

Teams with no punters on roster:
Chiefs

Teams with a punter whose league average yards/punt is less than Kluwe's (44.4):
Panthers
Packers
Bears
Redskins
Giants
Cowboys

Teams with a punter whose league average yards/punt is greater than Kluwe's:
Eagles
Seahawks
Rams
Saints
Dolphins
Chargers
Ravens
Texans
Colts
Jaguars
Titans

Yeah, but: dome factor. Noticed that 4 of the 6 behind him play in perennially shiatty climates

That may be an old list- Colquitt re-signed with the Chiefs in March.

True, though I wouldn't necessary consider DC to be perenially shiatty (just a perenially shiatty field).

rumpelstiltskin: That may be an old list- Colquitt re-signed with the Chiefs in March.

I used ESPN's rosters, which had the drafted players so I assumed (incorrectly) that they were somewhat up to date.  Colquitt's yards/punt average is SLIGHTLY higher than Kluwe's (44.7 vs 44.4)

And the Cowboys have the GIANT screen in the middle of the field that can effect punting too, it blocked a punt in the pre-season the first year it was hanging up there, IIRC.  So that kind of eliminates another one.

no surprise, Kluwe is a major geek/nerd.

If new punter isn't significantly better than Kluwe, the Vikings are going to look really ridiculous in this.

This may just be coincidence, but both Kluwe and Ayanbadejo were cut this offseason.

I don't think this had a damn thing to do with punting. I think the Vikings just drafted someone who'd keep his mouth shut and know his place at the ass-end of the team hierarchy.

Kluwe will find somewhere else. Another team, or an analyst booth, or state legislature, something. He is far from out of options. (As far as the Packers go, nobody here has really had any complaints about Tim Masthay, who's bailed us out of more than one sticky situation. So I don't know that it'd be here, and we're not big in the free agent market anyway. But if Kluwe did come here, I'd buy a jersey in like five seconds.)

This.  Sad to see him go, great guy, but Vikings need to get better in that dept.  Still want to get a Kluwe jersey.

I'm sure it is. Both moves are perfectly justifiable as a strict business/football decision.

Packers' Masthay is a better punter than Kluwe.   Don't be fooled by the average yards per punt, a better statistic is punts within the opposing 20.  With the Packers high powered offense, Tim Masthay doesn't have as many opportunities as a guy like Kluwe to bomb it.  He needs to be able to lay off it and gently put it into the 20.

So although I like Kluwe's advocacy and his writing style, I do not want him in Green Bay.  Our punter is better.

Actually, that makes me think if he wants to take a year off or flat out retire, maybe someone like HuffPo can hire him to maintain some snarky NFL blog during the season.

AlHarris31: Don't be fooled by the average yards per punt, a better statistic is punts within the opposing 20.

Good point.  For the list I posted, the only team Kluwe would be an improvement for (in terms of 2012 stats) would be the Eagles.

VvonderJesus: This may just be coincidence, but both Kluwe and Ayanbadejo were cut this offseason.

I'm going with coincidence for the moment.  Neither of them put up particularly phenomenal numbers last year, and for players without definitive "star power stats" movement in the offseason is normal.

Rhypskallion: Peter King talks about this in todays MMQB on the SI site.    He wrote that Kluwe should have a job by July at the very latest--and if not then NFL teams don't want punters who talk about issues.

He should have gone the safe route... beating his girlfriends, getting DUIs, trashing nightclubs and badmouthing teammates in the media. You know, rather than something that might be seen as controversial.

Yes, because if the new punter is only a little better or even the same and saves the Vikes salary cap they will look like mean spirited tools to everybody who likes drama more than football.
