That would only be true if you download the entire bitcoin transaction chain, subby. Which you don't have to do to use bitcoins (MtGox $120.1).

What I love is that no one can pinpoint who the founder was... and in some people's minds, that's still better than currency from the Fed or from the EU.

If you exchange all your life savings for any one thing - you deserve to lose it all.  Alternative currencies aren't a bad thing.  I'm surprised there aren't more.

So is there anything stopping people from taking any kinda of data, like a DVD rip or something, cutting it up into appropriate sized chunks and inserting them into the database ala Usenet?

Bitcoin is genius.  Someone declared nothing to be valuable, and people are willing to pay hundreds per nothing for it.  It's like buying and selling drusg with WoW daggers or something.

Except without actually selling the drugs, or buying them with the daggers.

Not many people understand how money works, ask the average person and you'll get some child-like sounding nonsense. Those same people have no clue as to what a bitcoin is let alone how it works.

This headline was so bad it gave me cancer.

Subby, i think it's been said already in here, the only person stupid enough to have this problem is you, after your lame failed attempt to figure out bitcoin.

if you don't take the whole chain, you don't get any of the content from where it was.  I assure you that those of us who use bitcoin in ways that we don't get arrested for know what we are are doing, and how to do it safely.

You keep being paranoid all you want, while i go back to my great life full of great things that were bought using bitcoins, like ammo that the government hasn't restricted, designer drugs, and access to the only "adult" dating site that actually works and doesn't include spam.

What makes this hilarious is that it's more like breaking into the Mint and engraving a penis into the plates they use to print the money. And they can never change it. Every dollar made for the rest of history will have your crudely drawn penis on it.

But I agree that it has absolutely no significance beyond the fact that it's hilarious.

"Taming the bubble": investors bet on Bitcoin via derivatives markets

Reached by phone in Singapore, Anatoliy Knyazev told Ars that the "Bitcoin Fund" was a "nice addition" to the mix of existing funds and other financial transactions that the company offers.

Did you think he needed help to prove his point?

That doesn't mean you understand the new thing. Actually, that was the whole reason for the .com bubble bursting: "LET'S INTARNET EVARYTHING", not realizing that a (sizable, but still smaller) plurality of the US (and other countries) had any internet access at all in the late 90s/ early 2000s and that most of it was only dial-up, making it impractical to use the web for everything in everyday life. That's what we see here. We're applying methods to tasks without having the ability to reap their rewards, while having infinite ability to cause problems with them.

That's a little bit extreme.  Every bitcoin doesn't have the entire registry "engraved" on it.  Transactions would get slower and slower over time....

But with the penis on paper money, the US Mint could actually destroy the penis bill and issue a new one in its place, if they were so offended.

To be fair - even the most well educated of economists can't agree on even the most basic ideas.  IE - should the X do Y?
