I think this pretty much covers it.

Anybody have anything else to add?

Anyone notice how they sneak new topics into the left-side scroll on Sportscenter during commercials? So you're all looking forward to "NFL DRAFT PREVIEW" and then when they come back from their boner pill commercial they've tossed "KOBE SPEAKS" and "TEBOW TO JACKSONVILLE?" in there.

Ok, fine; here you go, ESPN, have a cookie. Congrats on realizing it's not just with politics that a surprisingly high number of people actually like to be shouted at with trite narratives ad nauseam.

csb time

Last night after the basketball games I decided to switch over to sportscenter to catch some 'analysis' and really just to satisfy my morbid curiosity of whats going on over there (it is like that weird urge you get to try taco bell, even when you know it will do bad things to you). I made it 20 minutes until the special non sports story... girls HS/college/prison? basketball team has lost 216 games straight, but are still winning something.. herpes?

/ok I guess it wasnt very cool

ESPN is unwatchable, still better then the NFL network though.

And now you know why Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith still have jobs at ESPN (although, to be fair at least Stephen A. Smith gets his arguments right more often than Skip Bayless, and much more intelligently, but both of them are still loud-mouthed obnoxious jackasses).

News, sports...the 24-hour cycle inevitably breaks everything down to just filler.

2013-05-06 01:23:29 PM
No, ESPN decided long ago that debate was more important than news, and when that happens your coverage starts to migrate to the stories that provide the most/best debate topics.

I do have a problem with one statement made in this piece:

On the other hand, it's hard to sell centrism.

The hell it is. Centrism has none of the effort relied to be considered a zealot one way or another. Just lazily sit on your ass and add nothing to the conversation until its end, simply to mutter in the most self-righteous fashion possible, "Can't both sides see they're wrong?" Matter of fact, I can name one PennLive columnist who favors that approach.

Wadded Beef: News, sports...the 24-hour cycle inevitably breaks everything down to just filler.

Surprising that they have so much talk filler on ESPN and ESPN2, considering they have non-stop filler on ESPN News and there is, believe it or not, all manner of sports that could be broadcast going on all the time.

I listen to ESPN radio when I have to drive long distances through the radio hell that is the rural Southeast, and even on a Monday in the NFL season they'll probably put at most 5 minutes/hour into discussing athletic performance.  Everything else is manufactured news (Handshake-GATE!), trade and lineup speculation (TEBOWTEBOWTEBOW) or speculation about playoff matchups that are 2-3 months out.

People that listen to that crap and/or watch PTI, OTL, or their other debate shows for more than just a quick look at the ticker cycle deserve the manipulation they get.

Lol wut?  NFL Network's sunday night show is fantastic compared to Berman's woops and wops and whatever else he does during his Sunday night show.

Fox just announced this week that they signed two guys from TSN's Sportscentre who are really entertaining for their new sports station. I'm hoping this could mean they're serious about giving ESPN a decent challenge.

Gay people are sweet, cuddly, artistic and attractive.

Christians are obnoxious, reactionary, shallow and, most of all, ubiquitous.

That's why media are more interested in Jason Collins over Tim Tebow. It's not news that a pro athlete is vocal about his faith. It is news (briefly) when a pro athlete declares who he wants to fall in love with.

I much preferred 80s ESPN when the daytime lineup was Australian Rules Football, Latin Futbol Weekly, and swamp buggy racing complete with the Swamp Buggy Queen being thrown into the mud.

No...nobody else notices and now we can laugh at you for "looking forward" to something on Sportscenter.

You might roast a lot of otherwise OK people that just turn on ESPN to pass out to after a night on the town.

May I suggest we just set Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless instead?

There's a big difference between the two. There's nothing to be embarrassed about if you're gay. There's a lot to be embarrassed about if you're a Christian.

Well "Christian" is a broad term. Maybe Jason Collins even identifies as one. People need to go back to calling themselves Catholic, Baptist, whatever. Less confusing for me when I know they aren't all on the same "team."

I cut the cable in aught nine and while I've had resources like the first row and piggybacking Xfinity off of my parent's account, I have zero interest in anything ESPN that isn't a live event.
/lame story bro

I would debate that there hasn't been journalism at ESPN since its inception except you do get Tom Rinaldi's syrupy stories on Gameday and other programs.  I guess he's a reporter. :/

I'm sure they exist but I can't think of an investigative story from ESPN, they know who's hand feeds them and only pay attention to or report stories like T'eo once reporters like Bubbaprog force their hand.

I certainly did not.

I don't despise any of the athletes they talk about, I despise the constant media coverage of it.  I stopped watching ESPN last year, and I'm glad I did.

Me too, I just read Yahoo Sports, and if I want to see baseball highlights I got to MLB.COM.

Nothing will ever beat a week of hyping Lebron's "Decision" special then following it with a week of, "Was 'The Decision' over-hyped and tasteless?"
