clyph: Responsible gun owners don't let a new shooter (of ANY age) touch a firearm until they completely understand the rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded.
2) Never allow the muzzle to cover anything you aren't willing to destroy
3) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target

Some people like to add a 4th rule -: Be sure of your target and what lies beyond it - but that's a redundant case of rule #2

While I agree with you, knowing your target and what lies beyond is not a superfluous rule when you learn it in the military.  It separates the "stop flagging me bro" incidents from situations where the over-penetration of your rounds is a real danger.  When you are suppressing with .50bmg rounds out of a M2, it is really important that you know what is on the other side of that wall behind your target.  It is also key in room clearing and shoot houses where there is a very real danger that your rounds will over-penetrate into your friends (or innocents).

andynz81: When I was a kid I got my hands on a cheapish bow and arrow set with which I used to enjoy launching arrows straight up into the sly, so that I could dodge them as they came down. One day the arrow veered off and landed in my neighbour's property. I clambered up through the trees to find it, only to see it sticking in the ground about 2 metres from my neighbour, who was lying on her back sunbathing and quite oblivious to the near miss. I strolled up, said hi, grabbed my arrow and set off quickly before she could process what had just happened.

I somehow got away with that, but it did stop me from engaging in that Darwinesque practice. csb.

Thank you! I never thought I would look back on my childhood activities and consider them intelligent and worthwhile.

I wouldn't go sharing that story anymore....
