Wait - this is a joke, right?

"Others said the tape made it difficult to breathe. "I breathe mostly with my mouth," said second-grader Amilcar Arredondo. "

Really? A kid said "hey, I'm a mouth breather?"

Hm, I was under the impression that putting your hand on someone without permission is considered assault.

Sounds like simple Assault to me.

If I go into a police station and start taping their mouths shut, I will certainly be charged with Assault....

And then they'll beat the shiat out of me.

Some of us have lots of scar tissue in our nostrils and bad allergies. One of my nostrils is almost completely closed off and when I am hiking or exerting myself breathing out of my nose is not an option. If you taped my mouth shut I would probably panic and would not be able to get enough air through my one good nostril.

I'm going to believe the people who weren't coached by their parents on what to say.

Michelle Rhee did the same thing - to the point where kids' lips were bleeding.  And she giggles about it now.

Now she's a media-darling & education "reform" leader.  Don't trust her as far as you could throw her.

You sound fat

This is a completely manufactured story. When you see the little kids on the news you can tell they're just quoting their parents. The teacher initially said they all wanted it done as a joke. Sounds like a bored fat mom to me

Honestly, what crime do you think would have been committed? Folks who think the teacher committed some heinous act of child abuse: next time you think the country has gone mad because of a hysterical public response to some incident you regard as minor, look in the mirror.

As somebody who suffers from a lot of clogged sinuses due to allergies and such, I always freak out a little when I see or hear about people getting their mouths taped shut. Do that to the wrong person at the wrong time and you'll kill them.

Hey, it happens. I was a mouth breathing kid too (usually it wasn't so obvious, but there's no way I'd put tape completely closing my mouth as a kid). Luckily in my case, the problem resolved itself as I grew and whatever parts up in my sinuses became more proportional to the rest of my head, but at one point there was some question of if I'd need surgery for it.

If the kids really were asking for the tape, it was totally voluntary, and they could take it off, then I don't see a problem. The one kid saying the teacher got mad when she took off the tape, that's a problem.  I can see how it's funny and novel to try to talk with tape on your mouth when you're 7, as long as it's all just voluntary playing.

I had a teacher tape my mouth shut once, my mom didn't freak out, she said it was clearly my fault.  Also, the kids asked for it.  It is dumb that the police were even called in.

When I was in the third grade my teacher would punish us by making us hold our arms out parallel to the floor.  Act up, stay in for recess, but instead of doing homework, or school work, or busy work, stand next to our desks holding our arms out for all of recess.  Yes other students and teachers from other classes saw us.  No, none of them gave a damn about us, just laughed.  Yes it hurt.  This was also the mid1980s in public school.  The teacher had a yard stick that she used to insure our arms stayed up.  If she got away with that, your kids can take some tape over the mouth.

So, those of you who are concerned that the kids might have (but clearly didn't) suffocated and panicked, did the teacher also tie their hands?

It seems unlikely that suffocating, panicking grade-schoolers wouldn't simply pull the tape off their mouths.

Oh for fark's sake...

-2nd grade teacher makes a joke to her student that if he can't be quiet, she'll have to tape his mouth up
-Student agrees that this is what he needs, so she tapes him up in the spirit of fun
-Other kids in the class want to do it too (because 2nd graders want any special treatment the other kids in the class get), so the teacher complies.
-A few kids tell their parents what happened at school today with no sense of irony or understanding of how adults overreact
-Adults overreact
-That farking "bullying" word enters the discourse because of the media coverage
-Teacher's reputation is tarnished because a few parents can't remember what it's like to be a second-grader or understand the difference between a joke and a classroom incident

People talk about how today's generation is going to be made up of delicate flowers thanks to helicopter parents. But I think the helicopter parents ARE the delicate flowers, and the upcoming generation is going to go for some wild adventures once they're old enough to get away from their stupid parents and actually live their own lives.

Never tape shut the mouth of a student, even in jest. If you want people to recognize this as a joke, toss them the roll of tape and let them do this themselves.

My Grandma used to teach 2nd graders at Whitman Elementary School in Denver, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

//CSS: I attended Lansing Elem. School in Aurora, Colo., not far from Fulton. As a student, I was sexually assaulted several times by a school janitor who would stick his hands under my shirt & rub my chest. I tried filing a lawsuit against Aurora Public Schools when I got older, but was told the statute of limitations ran out.

bullshait. single strip of clear scotch tape isnt suffocating these kids. 26 kids were probably having fun with it, and two little whiny biatches held it in until they could cry to mommy.
