Abdelkader to have a telephone hearing for the charge last night

Donnchadha: Fubar: Shouldn't that be an ejection.?

Coming off the bench, yeah, but it was just an minor roughing as the play went by him.

The announcers mentioned that he moved his stick purposfully towards his face. If thats not intent to injure, then I don't know what is.

"Intent to injure" is for over the top plays. You could argue that any fight, slash, hook, spear, butt-end, slewfoot, etc. is an attempt to injure

Vangor: I remember in 2008, when the Wings won against the Penguins, during some game of the finals there was a pass which Crosby did basically bringing the puck out of his own zone and to someone up ice coming out on a line change, and the ridiculous way the announcer praised him for this was over-the-top to the point I am positive what I remember is a caricature. There was some description about the poise with which Crosby passed the puck to somehow reinvigorate his team, showing the endurance of Crosby amidst a long (slightly over a minute) shift to kill off a penalty.

It really bugs me how badly these NBC announces are praising Crosby. Even the Islanders announcers have made comments like "The NHL needs Sidney Crosby."

I find it terribly vexing.

You said it.

You're right, this league would be sooooo much better without its best player.

That's like saying a BLT is better without bacon.

Props to the Isles, they're really taking it to the Pens!

They may go over the top, but for the most part he deserves it.

i hate crosby just as much as everyone for being a whiny biatch, but when you watch the guy live you can tell he is on a different level than everyone else on the ice.

All one needs to do is look at Pascal Dupuis' statistics to see how good Crosby is.

Every once in a great while the so-called brain trust at the NHL gets something right. Today is one of those days.

Now they'll probably ruin it by announcing another slate of outdoor games for next season...

...or by NOT suspending Abdelkader.

You know...something colossally stupid, as they are wont to do.

Fubar: You're right, this league would be sooooo much better without its best player.

No one is suggesting we would be better without Crosby, though I would argue a single player is not the best but is among the best and he certainly is among the best, but he is not this entity supporting the whole of the league. He is a great, marketable player.

FreakinB: They may go over the top, but for the most part he deserves it.

Undoubtedly he deserves a great deal of praise, but I seriously disapprove of the numerous references to Crosby when not involved in the play. This has quieted recently, but this was ceaseless and at the height of his whining.

craigzy: i hate crosby just as much as everyone for being a whiny biatch, but when you watch the guy live you can tell he is on a different level than everyone else on the ice.

I see Crosby as a great player who happens to have a quality team who tries to work around Crosby.

Noooooooo. He had a 50 and a 60 point season in Anaheim, IIRC. In fact, I think he averaged over 40pts per year with the Ducks. And they were the team that drafted him, so not much of a journeyman.

But Crosby has made him even better, no doubt.

I mean, I don't think there's any question that he's the best player. Sure he has defensive shortcomings, but he's so far ahead of everyone else offensively.

I will never hate on his skill. He is absolutely a talented player, but that is only one (albiet large) part of what makes a great player.

All the complaining to refs, the temper tantrums, the post whistle jabs, third-man-in for fights, punches from behind etc detract from him as being a great player. That behavior should not be rewarded with praise because he can score goals. FFS, the guy asked a Ref to make an announcement ordering fans (from an opposing team) to stop throwing out hats following a hat trick, a 60 year old tradition.

I'm sorry but I disagree that the NHL needs that.

ytterbium: I remember that all too vividly, are you all healed up now?

I wish, thanks for asking though.  When I got out of the hospital the hole in my leg was roughly the diameter of a dinner plate.  Today it has closed up to be roughly a saucer sized plate.  So there is measurable progress but it is incredibly slow (which is understandable as my body pretty much has to rebuild everything from the muscle layer on up).  I think the doc said that the healing progress is roughly a 1mm reduction every two weeks or about a 3cm reduction in size every year.  That's actually pretty accurate in how fast it's going (it was 2011 not 2010 for those keeping score).  So it sucks & affects everything else that I do, but it's the hand I was dealt so I play it as best I can.

That said though I'm very thankful that it is what it was as it could have been a WHOLE lot worse.  My doc said that if I had waited one more day before going in I would have lost the leg, 3 more days & I'd probably have died.  I went to see him 3 days after noticing the first (minor) symptom.  It is scary just how fast this goes from meh to life threatening in a matter of a couple of days.  But I make the best of it & do what I can.  When you can only do so much you really figure out just what is important & what is just window dressing.

However enough of that, there's hockey going on, sad as it may be to those rooting for the Isles.

I think Crosby is a generational talent, and I enjoy watching him play. For me, what really galled me was back in 2009, Pavel Datsyuk, Nick Lidstrom, and Sidney Crosby were all slated to sit out the All Star Game. All three had gone to the SCF in the previous two seasons and were attempting to nurse nagging injuries and rest up for another post-season run. Bettman got his panties in a wad about these superstars not attending the event (for optics only?), and Crosby went scurrying to the game where he stood around behind Bettman all weekend. But not until after he got off the plane and intimated that Nicklas Lidstrom had no class for staying home to nurse injuries, rest, and spend time with his family.

Nicklas.

Lidstrom.

The second greatest defenseman of all time and one of the best ambassadors the game has ever known. For Crosby to make those statements was absolutely ridiculous and he'd have done well to have kept his fool mouth shut.

Now, I chalked some of this up at the time to youth and that as he got older and wiser he'd be a bit more diplomatic. But then a couple of years ago, nursing concussion issues, he rants about head hunting in the game and how it needs to change, while turning a blind eye to Matt Cooke's shenanigans.

So, I can see why (when coupled with the media's infatuation with him) many folks are less than enamored in him.
