For all its faults - and there are a lot of them - the one great thing about Nassau Coliseum is that its smallness and intimacy means that it gets LOUD when it's full and the crowd is excited. And us Islanders fans haven't had much to be excited about over the past 20 years, so coming home after taking one on the road against a heavy favorite definitely qualifies.

Expect the crowd to be crazy loud at the start, and to take it up a few notches if the Isles play well.

GO HAWKS!

FYI- Justin Abdelkader has a 4pm EDT phone hearing over the charging call that got him thrown out of last night's game.

Go Isles, Sens and Sharks...

Still sick. Going back to bed.

2013-05-05 11:45:54 AM
Somehow I am still sober. Soon this will be rectified.

Penguins had the requisite clusterfark game to remind them to respect their opponents. Now IT'S GO TIME BIATCHES

Canada always has trouble with Switzerland. Hopefully that continues this afternoon. 1-1 in the 3rd.

As for the NHL, I'm all in on the Islanders.

And  Abdelkader gets at least a game. I assume most Wings fans will be happy because of it.

Hey, as sublimely delicious as it was to win the Cup in the Joe, I for one kinda like the Wings. They make great Honorable Rivals and, unlike you, are classy.

2013-05-05 12:52:31 PM
Darn, got all excited for nothing.  I just got home & started scanning the thread while waiting for other things to load & the Islanders were up 2-0 & all was right with the world.  I get to the end & get other stuff loaded & the score is tied, that's just wrong.

In order, go Isles, Wild, Habs & Sharks.  That said I really don't care too much about the actual teams playing today & would rather just have exciting games (& lots of beat up bodies so that they're sore when they do play against the teams that I do care about....).

Anyway, here's to a fun full day of hockey

Oh, I thought it was me -- I listened to the game one on the radio (NBC Sports was having technicial difficulties) and the Pens won, then I watched game 2 on TV and they lost, then I started watching this game on TV, the Isles went up 2-0, so I muted the TV and turned on the radio and... well, you see what happened then

My sister was in Pittsburgh recently and got my son a very nice Pens black hoodie pullover. While very thoughtful, she underestimated his dislike for the team. He refuses to wear it (sorry sis, if you're reading this) but he did appreciate the considerate nature of the gift.

I remember in 2008, when the Wings won against the Penguins, during some game of the finals there was a pass which Crosby did basically bringing the puck out of his own zone and to someone up ice coming out on a line change, and the ridiculous way the announcer praised him for this was over-the-top to the point I am positive what I remember is a caricature. There was some description about the poise with which Crosby passed the puck to somehow reinvigorate his team, showing the endurance of Crosby amidst a long (slightly over a minute) shift to kill off a penalty.

I will never hate on his skill. He is absolutely a talented player, but that is only one (albiet large) part of what makes a great player.

All the complaining to refs, the temper tantrums, the post whistle jabs, third-man-in for fights, punches from behind etc detract from him as being a great player. That behavior should not be rewarded with praise because he can score goals. FFS, the guy asked a Ref to make an announcement ordering fans (from an opposing team) to stop throwing out hats following a hat trick, a 60 year old tradition.

I'm sorry but I disagree that the NHL needs that.

ytterbium: I remember that all too vividly, are you all healed up now?

I wish, thanks for asking though.  When I got out of the hospital the hole in my leg was roughly the diameter of a dinner plate.  Today it has closed up to be roughly a saucer sized plate.  So there is measurable progress but it is incredibly slow (which is understandable as my body pretty much has to rebuild everything from the muscle layer on up).  I think the doc said that the healing progress is roughly a 1mm reduction every two weeks or about a 3cm reduction in size every year.  That's actually pretty accurate in how fast it's going (it was 2011 not 2010 for those keeping score).  So it sucks & affects everything else that I do, but it's the hand I was dealt so I play it as best I can.

That said though I'm very thankful that it is what it was as it could have been a WHOLE lot worse.  My doc said that if I had waited one more day before going in I would have lost the leg, 3 more days & I'd probably have died.  I went to see him 3 days after noticing the first (minor) symptom.  It is scary just how fast this goes from meh to life threatening in a matter of a couple of days.  But I make the best of it & do what I can.  When you can only do so much you really figure out just what is important & what is just window dressing.

However enough of that, there's hockey going on, sad as it may be to those rooting for the Isles.

I think Crosby is a generational talent, and I enjoy watching him play. For me, what really galled me was back in 2009, Pavel Datsyuk, Nick Lidstrom, and Sidney Crosby were all slated to sit out the All Star Game. All three had gone to the SCF in the previous two seasons and were attempting to nurse nagging injuries and rest up for another post-season run. Bettman got his panties in a wad about these superstars not attending the event (for optics only?), and Crosby went scurrying to the game where he stood around behind Bettman all weekend. But not until after he got off the plane and intimated that Nicklas Lidstrom had no class for staying home to nurse injuries, rest, and spend time with his family.

Nicklas.

Lidstrom.

The second greatest defenseman of all time and one of the best ambassadors the game has ever known. For Crosby to make those statements was absolutely ridiculous and he'd have done well to have kept his fool mouth shut.

Now, I chalked some of this up at the time to youth and that as he got older and wiser he'd be a bit more diplomatic. But then a couple of years ago, nursing concussion issues, he rants about head hunting in the game and how it needs to change, while turning a blind eye to Matt Cooke's shenanigans.

So, I can see why (when coupled with the media's infatuation with him) many folks are less than enamored in him.

try the veal, kiss your waitress

Crosby reminds me of a guy on my soccer team. He's so skilled that he's clearly a little above everyone on the field. He gets very into the game, so much that he occasionally loses his cool with refs/players and does something petulant. But to his team members, he is ceaselessly encouraging, unselfish, and dedicated. Anyone who pays close attention to the Penguins can see the latter perspective. I can understand why Crosby sometimes frustrates people, though.

Seriously NBC, the Islanders don't play in Manhattan. I'm sure there's some aerial shots of Jones Beach or something that you could take.

/I know they're going to play in Brooklyn in a couple of years

LMAO, for real.  I had no idea I had lobbed up such a softball there.

Recoil Therapy: ytterbium: I remember that all too vividly, are you all healed up now?

/EIP if you're interested/want to know more
//don't want to threadjack too much

my gfs sis had bad headaches and a sore neck which she associated with being a CPA during tax-time.  she finally went to the doc, it turns out its a tumor on the base of her skull.  neurologist said if she waited another month she wouldve been christopher reeved.  luckily, its benign, and her surgery is friday, but it really is amazing how fast these things can sneak up.

good luck with your recovery

Pituophis: Donnchadha: And Kunitz. He was a journeyman average player before being on Crosby's wing.

Noooooooo. He had a 50 and a 60 point season in Anaheim, IIRC. In fact, I think he averaged over 40pts per year with the Ducks. And they were the team that drafted him, so not much of a journeyman.

But Crosby has made him even better, no doubt.

With your later correction, this is pretty much correct.  He spent a couple of years here in Cincinnati with the Baby Ducks (AHL) before moving onto the big club where he set rookie records for # of points.  Other than a couple of weeks with Atlanta before bouncing back to Anaheim doing the waiver dance, he's only been with the Ducks & Penguins so certainly not a journeyman.

As much as I don't particularly like the Penguins, I'm glad that Chris is on the line with Crosby.  They work well together & each makes the other better (Chris benefiting much more than Syd of course...)

Malacon: All the complaining to refs, the temper tantrums, the post whistle jabs, third-man-in for fights, punches from behind etc detract from him as being a great player.

No, they don't.

He gets mentioned in the same breath as Gretzkty and won a Cup by age 22. Among scoring leaders every year, when he's healthy, and led the league this year while he was still injured for quite some time.

Did he make mistakes as a new NHLer? Sure he did, but to say that any of that garbage detracts from the best NHL superstar in a generation? No, that's dumb.

Yes, murder is repositioning after a shot and getting caught initially on the leg of a player to cause a high stick which hit the chin. Sorry, Gretzky had penalties as any player did, but Crosby has played dirty and whined, which has fortunately settled as he continues to play.

Jubeebee: NBC studio guy just said that Josh Harding needs to step up for Minnesota and neither Milbury nor JR said anything. Harding has NOT been Minnesota's problem.

Perhaps not, but regardless of who's been the problem, the goalie always needs to step up. More so if his teammates are being fartknockers.

2013-05-05 02:58:28 PM

desertgeek: The Penguins are channeling last year's team and Fleury is slowly developing into a Luongo.

at least luongo stops pucks occasionally.  fleury looks slow and unsure of himself.  his positioning on a few of the goals has been terrible (like nabokovs glove-side corner), specifically the breakaway he sat back deep in the blue.

2013-05-05 02:58:34 PM
I don't like watching Iginla as a Penguin. For him to play like Iginla he has to be the go to player. Like Morrow. He has to be the go to player for him to dominate too. Having too many go to players playing on the same team is a bad idea and rarely works.

Yeah, all of my streams are deciding to either collapse completely or stutter horrifically after about three hours of being quite solid.

Very close to an Isles fail just then

Accepted. If I was a Minnesota fan, though, I'd be more focused on how Koivu has been dominated by Toews the past two games.

I've got no favorite in this match. I'm a little sick of Chicago, not to mention their seeming destiny this season makes them an easy target to root against. Minnesota is a division rival of the Avs, but they hardly ever really  felt like one, and I do have my sympathies for them.

I don't know. The Wild, I guess. Just because they have a smaller bandwagon.

Hell, I'm a Blackhawks fan and I don't have a reason to dislike the Wild.  (Then again the Astros reference delighted me since they were swept by my White Sox in 2005.)

As a Flames fan, I see far more of the Wild than I would like.

In the pre Suter and Parise days, and still to some extent now, the Wild play the most joyless, boring, defensive, safe hockey of any team in the league. It's like they want to take hockey and just make it a f*cking chore to watch.

It goes back to several seasons ago when the Flames had Pay-Per-View games about 8-10 times a season.

One Tuesday night with no wife and kids and nothing to do, I ordered the PPV game. Flames/Wild. I settled in with a few beers and watched one of the most godawful games I have ever seen. Result, Flames blanked 3-0 at home.

It was a failing of my team as well. Truly just a complete breakdown.

F*ck the Wild.

Maybe the Wild will replace Detroit as far as division rivals after all. I don't know if I would ever actually hate them though.

What is bullish... about a penalty where a player grabs a player on the opposing team with both hands and drags him down while he is going to the net with the puck?

The refs won't call everything in the playoffs, but if it creates or negates a scoring chance, they will.

I'm not taking it that far, but it's a bit borderline. But the Isles are making their point and that's really all I expected going in. Actually winning would be a bonus.

I'm also sick of every goddamn Swedish defenseman being compared to Lidstrom. If nothing else, it shows no imagination. Why does a Swede have to be like another Swede? And if you insist on keeping it national, there was once a guy named Salming. I hear he was halfway decent.

Similar thing happens in the NBA. Nobody ever compares players across races. Human nature I guess.

Though if life follows your observations fully, I look forward to every future Swedish NBA player being Jonas Jerebko.

the wild are playing scared.  its only a matter of time if they lay back that the hawks will score.

crashing the net, hustling for every puck, and beating the hawks to the puck, is the only reason this game isnt 6-2, and i dont understand why you would just ditch that philosophy.

Ugh, what a mess the hit was. Nothing noticed to start, and gradual shift towards five minutes and an ejection from the game. Hard to tell from the video, and I admit I am a Red Wings fan thus my opinion is probably biased in our favor, if he leaves his feet before or due to initial contact, and frankly he deserved the five and possibly the ejection but nothing further. Ridiculous to lose him for two and a half games for an arguable call which went unnoticed despite being the center of play.

I'm thinking it's gotta be the right station.  I did a little more digging, and that's the CSN that has the Kings' brand of Predetermined Thugball.  You gotta figure a Sacramento hospital isn't going to peeve the marks and deny them their sports entertainment.

Leaf/Sens games are fun that way too... Toronto is about the same distance the other way.   I know a few guys that live between Toronto and Ottawa and are Leaf fans that have season tickets in both buildings...  Also, in the 60 or so years since Ottawa had a team and got one back, the town divided their loyalties pretty much down the middle based on language... so Leafs and Habs have a strong local fan base...

I'm not going to give them shiat for it. Partly because I'd like to be one of those Habs fans someday, mostly because most Aussie teams share stadiums and I genuinely think it makes for a better experience for everybody when there's plenty of opposing fans within shouting distance.

Well that was bad timing.  I get back from dinner just in time to hear the period horn.  Ah well.  How's the game been?

Congrats on the move Andy.  Now instead of being woken up 3 times a night to get your BP & temp they'll only wake you up once & that will be to give you a sleeping pill.

As far as Abdelkader goes, I'm ok with it (trying not to be a Ducks homer here).  Compared with some other similar hits, one game would have been fine but two is justifiable.  Also for whoever was complaining upthread about the refs taking to long to call it, the zebra right next to the play had his arm up almost instantly for the penalty.  In many of the views he was out of the frame, but there are some that have him in it & it was called right then.  With the injury the tv cut to commercial & the refs/linesmen were talking about things during it according to the PBP guy.  Once they came back from the break the penalty was announced, but it was called at the appropriate time.

From what I've heard, tickets in Montreal are both hard to get & reasonably expensive.  As Ottawa isn't that far away it makes sense that quite a few would make a relatively short road trip.  The same goes for Leaf fans too except they can also head to Buffalo.  Apparently even with gas & a hotel tickets are cheaper than in Toronto.

However as I'm deep in the middle of the US my info comes from listening to hockey broadcasts & reading people complaining on the internet so I could be way off...

if a player is given a double minor penalty (4 minutes), and the opposing team scores during the first 2 minutes of the double minor (blood), is the first 2 minutes of the 4 minute penalty automatically taken off the board, or does it not effect the 4 minute minor at all (team being on powerplay the whole time unless they score 2 goals?)????????

I agree with it the way it went down as he was hit just before the shot to the goal.  A question for everyone though, what if same situation but Subban somehow managed to hit him in the mouth with his stick after the puck was in the goal.  Would it be the full 4 minutes then?  In the first case it was penalty, goal, punishment.  In mine it is goal, penalty & then the punishment is?

After the first goal the penalty clock resets to 2 minutes left.  So if they got a goal within the first 10 seconds of the 4 minutes, the 1:50 would be taken away (like any pp ends when there is a goal) & the next 2:00 starts with the puck drop

Would be interesting, but I'd think if it happened AFTER the puck went in it would be a 4-minute penalty.  Or a major and game misconduct cause more likely than not if something like that happened after the puck went in, someone lost their shiat and did something stupid.  :-)

It's PK Subban, he'll be in there at least two more times (if he doesn't get a game misconduct first).

I know.  Maybe the coach should sit his ass a little this game to calm him down.  Though I hate to not have his presence and skill in the lineup, if he's got an attitude for some reason tonight he's gonna be more of a liability and distraction which we don't need.

vegaswench: Silvara: I'm sure your team has only another year or two before they're going to be in the playoffs and whip their way through to a Cup ;)

I have called 2015 as the year the Oilers win the Cup since 2009.  I figured if I called it far enough away, no one would remember if I was wrong.

VW, I have a long (35 years) hatred of the Oilers due to a man named Skalbania. But for your sake, I'll gladly root for the Oilers...just don't tell my mom.

I do enjoy the day celebrating the Mexican victory over the French in the war of lapsed payment for escargot in 1862.

Given Volkswagen's propensity for electrical gremlins, the LAST thing I'd want is a VW hybrid.

Too true. I wish he'd turn down the rrrrrrage a little bit so MTL could bank on his skills a little more instead of cursing his recklessness.
