Nothing is going to happen.

Syria can't even tame their own rebel, and suddenly they are going to take on Israel? Lebanon is scared shiatless that the sectarian violence will spill over on their side of the border worst than it already has, and no way they are getting involved over this. Jordan? Egypt? Don't make me laugh. What are the Iraqis going to do about it? Yemen? Saudi Arabia? Qatar? Dubai? UAE?

The only wildcard there is Iran... and how on earth are they going to be able to project enough power to make it to Israel? What, they'd fire missiles at Israel? That would be giving us (and America) the perfect opportunity to get rid of their nuclear weapons program.

These cries of 'Tis the end of the world as we know it!' are ridiculous.

doglover: Well, honestly, the Israelis are often pricks in the international community. This isn't one of those times though.

Every single day it's "Syrian government commits new atrocity. Rebels gain West's support."

Israel actually does something to improve the situation in the very real interests of their own national security and you'd think it'd be lauded. But no, it's bad because it's Israel.

I don't get the hate.

you answered your own question - it's because Israel has a reputation for being pricks that nobody trusts their motives.  think of it as 'the boy who cried wolf'.  Israel has cried wolf many, many, many, many times.  so even if/when they come up against a situation where they ARE in the right....nobody is gonna trust 'em.  And you know what?  I don't feel sorry for Israel at all.  I'd like us to be done with them.  they're big enough to stand on their own.  let them go and do things their own with, without the protection of the United States.

Stone Meadow: Tatsuma: Stone Meadow: October 1973. See Operation Nickel Grass.

By the time the first weapons arrived in Israel, the IDF was deep inside Syrian and Egyptian territory, rolling toward Damascus and Cairo and the war had already been won. Not saying it didn't help, but certainly wasn't a factor in Israel's victory, as we'd already won.

The first arrivals of those weapons occurred just 8 days into the war, allowing the IDF to push on and drive home a more decisive victory, which led directly to Camp David and 40 years and counting of regional peace that Israel would not have been able to accomplish on its own.

You either have a very weird definition of peace of are defining a very small region.

(Yes, I know it was a desperate gamble and know all about the million-casualty figures for an invasion.)

That would be the European powers, mainly France and Spain, that controlled everything east of present day Virginia.  Which the nascent 13 state U.S. eventually bought out or kicked out, and have been making reparations for ever since.

And yes, when same said Europeans got all genocidy and holocausty once again, we bombed the crap out of them until they cut it out.  Hopefully they won't try it yet again.

Syria's been waging a war against its own civilians, has killed more than 70,000 (close to 80,000 at this point), has used chemical weapons, is transferring some of their arsenal to terrorist groups, and yet a lot of people are a lot more pissed off with Israel for destroying a military depot in the middle of nowhere and not killing a single civilian.

So, yeah, when people focus overly on Israel when there are a lot of people doing a lot worse, it's likely due to an anti-Jewish obsession than reality.

I think it had a lot to do with timing.

Israel has always been the US "deputy" in the Middle East for World Police. When the US and sane Arabic country need a job done, it's Israel who is willing to do the job.

It's hady for the following reasons
1) US/UN/NATO keeps their hands clean. Justifies their government investment into Israel.
2) Arabic countries won't be deemed traitors for attacking one of its own (see Sadam Huseuien )
3) Israel is already hated-so they don't care what anyone else thinks. But at least they remind everyone they are still badasses.

dr_blasto: I would expect that would be because neighboring powers would have incinerated them by now.

I meant that as in 'Israel will have taken care of them'.

dr_blasto: What I would have expected to happen is bunkers being incinerated by somebody by now.

Well the reason they weren't is twofold:

1 - Will Assad really fall?
2 - Will he use those chemical weapons?

Even right now, it is not assured that Assad is going to be removed from power. It's not even 'likely'. It's a completely unknown outcome at this point, as long as it stays an internal conflict (well, as internal as it can be when Iran is pouring in weapons and fighters, and the Arab states are backing the rebels).

If Assad had not used those weapons, Israel most likely would not have greenlit that strike. Assad in power having those chemical weapons, while definitely not optimal, is not much of a problem as long as these weapons stay in bunkers and he's not trying to give them to terrorist groups. He's never going to fire them himself on Israel.

Once it looks like he's about to fall AND he's using them on the populace, whose to say that some of the troops meant to fire them at civilians won't defect with them? That's why Israel is stepping up right now.

fark letting Al-Nusra or Hizbullah get their hands on these weapons.

Tatsuma: Nothing is going to happen.

well...nothing other than the fact that the rest of the world is going to think Israel is being a prick.  Which we already knew.  But I guess for some reason Israel felt the need to remind the world that they're ok with beating up on people weaker than themselves for no reason other than they can.

So, Syria is saying they consider Israel's attack a declaration of war... so Syria responds with a strongly worded letter?

It sounds like they're trying to avoid the war.

Tatsuma: These cries of 'Tis the end of the world as we know it!' are ridiculous.

I have to agree, there's no way Syria can even think about effectively fighting on two fronts, and no other nation is going to jump in there for them (despite what Russia may bluster).

I don't know that I'm FOR it, but I don't think it's going to snowball into a huge thing.
