Syria calls it an 'act of war'... Isn't Syria and Israel still at war since Syria never accepted the 1948 peace treaty?  Hell they have still been actively fighting that war since the early 1970s, right?

Carth: Stone Meadow: The first arrivals of those weapons occurred just 8 days into the war, allowing the IDF to push on and drive home a more decisive victory, which led directly to Camp David and 40 years and counting of regional peace that Israel would not have been able to accomplish on its own.

You either have a very weird definition of peace of are defining a very small region.

On the scale of the four major regional wars that preceded Camp David, which killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions more, and with the promise of nothing but more of the same to come, I'd call Camp David an unqualified triumph.

"501st Unit" means nothing.  It could be any type of unit assigned to any division or a separate brigade.  Chemical weapons can be assigned to air forces, artillery, engineers, unique chemical weapons units, etc.

omnibus_necanda_sunt: radarlove: omnibus_necanda_sunt: What I don't get is, we know he has chemical weapons. We know where they are. We haven't had any qualms about folks sending in strike teams to destroy Syrian WMDs before. Why not destroy the production plants and storage bunkers? It would eliminate any chance of the West's red line from being crossed, and allow them to stew in peace*. Russia would breathe a sigh of relief, and Obama can stay out of the Middle East and not look like a hypocrite.

*[inigomontoya.jpg]

Because a lot of the time, when you smash open a big pile of chemical and/or biological weapons with a bomb, you get a big f-ing cloud of chemical/biological agents.  A big f-ing cloud that flies anywhere the wind decides to take it, killing everything in its path.  With a lot of the biological weapons, it's even worse than that.

These things have to be disposed of very carefully, very thoroughly, and with exceeding attention to detail.

This is why Israel is primarily attacking the delivery systems for such weapons instead of the weapons themselves.  Nobody wants a cloud of plague to waft over Tel Aviv.

Chemical weapons like phosgene and sarin are exceedingly vulnerable to sunlight and moisture. Sarin is also a liquid that relies on proper aerosolizing techniques to be effective.

A thermobaric charge with a magnalium secondary would also leave alkaline residue to further speed the hydrolysis of whatever isn't incinerated immediately.

Bio, I agree with you there.

It occurs to me that a second flyover to dump concentrated calcium hypochlorite solution on the plant would destroy the leftover chemical residue.

For a bioweapons plant, if neutralization is absolutely necessary, I would minimize use of concussive weapons and rely mainly on incendiaries. Magnalium thermobarics, triethylaluminum, napalm, dicyanoacetylene, etc. The goal would be to cook the inside of the plant as thoroughly as possible after punching as few holes as necessary in the outer wall. The trick would be to reach the necessary temperatures without melting the superstructure of the plant and precipitating a collapse.

A second sweep with calcium hypochlorite would likewise be necessary.

That makes it much easier, then. Blast holes in the wall, send guided incendiaries inside (I'd shoot for 5kg per cubic meter of the plant), and cover the wreckage with thousands of gallons of 70% calcium hypochlorite.

Given Israel's success in destroying the al-Kibar reactor, I'd say it's doable.

What do you think, Tats?

Tatsuma: Nothing is going to happen.

Syria can't even tame their own rebel, and suddenly they are going to take on Israel? Lebanon is scared shiatless that the sectarian violence will spill over on their side of the border worst than it already has, and no way they are getting involved over this. Jordan? Egypt? Don't make me laugh. What are the Iraqis going to do about it? Yemen? Saudi Arabia? Qatar? Dubai? UAE?

The only wildcard there is Iran... and how on earth are they going to be able to project enough power to make it to Israel? What, they'd fire missiles at Israel? That would be giving us (and America) the perfect opportunity to get rid of their nuclear weapons program.

These cries of 'Tis the end of the world as we know it!' are ridiculous.

What would be very cool is for Iran to launch a missile at Haifa and it goes off course and takes out Mecca. During Hajj.

What do you call a war where everyone is fighting everyone?

And who's bringing the popcorn.

The simple fact of the matter is that every person alive can plainly see what is on the horizon, this ominous cloud of death and destruction that looms above every nation, ready to descend and consume us all. We all see it, but the thought of it is so terrifying that most people either refuse to acknowledge it, assume that it will only affect the "other guy," or actively run from it/try to impede its progress.

The rest of the world thinking that Israel are being pricks?

Obama came out and not only said that Israel was right to do what it did, but gave carte blanche for many such operations in the future as well. The EU also said that Israel had every right to do what it did, and while Arab States have not reacted openly about this, considering the fact that they are all rooting for Assad to fall and rooting openly for the rebels, I'm sure Jerusalem received many encrypted cables congratulating them and wishing for more.

The only people who think Israel was wrong to do that are the furthest extremists on the far fringes.

They have, on multiple occasions, refused to participate to NATO activities when Israel was involved.

No way that they will, in any way, cooperate with Israel on this, certainly not wage war. This goes against everything Erdogan has been building since he took power.

2013-05-05 02:36:50 PM

Tatsuma: dr_blasto: Surprised Israel has taken this long to do anything. With the crazy civil war next store, reports of Assad having chemical weapons (before the reports of using them), I figured they'd strike depots early to avoid those weapons getting distributed to the crazies. Also surprised Turkey hasn't done anything either.

If/when Assad falls, there's a strong likelihood that the storage facilities get raided by rebels. If that crap falls into the wrong hands, like the crazy fundies instead of the FSA, every border country is at risk.

Well there are rumors of plenty of special ops things happening, and other things I won't go into details. As far as why right now? Well it has to do with the fact that Assad has decided to get the genie out of the bottle, and he's also been stepping up the transfer of weapons to Hizbullah.

By the time Assad falls, there won't be any chemical or biological weapons or Syrians left.

Fixed.
