"It is simply false to suggest, as I did, that his approach to economic policy was inspired by any aspect of his personal life. As those who know me and my work are well aware, I detest all prejudice, sexual or otherwise."

In 1926, Mr Keynes married Lydia Lopokova, a Russian ballerina, and Prof Ferguson also said he had forgotten that she had miscarried.

Whatever Harvard is paying him, it's far too much.

I was just thinking that it's pretty obvious he's a really bad historian.

I don't know if you've ever watched any Ferguson.  Egghead Academics who say "Rah, rah, imperialism... wasn't that just the spiffiest thing ever?" are always in fashion.

He's written tons of best-selling books and is moderately well-known even to people who aren't history buffs. The fact that he's also a neo-con apologist and prone to letting his politics influence his work is unfortunate, but he probably brings in enough money for them to not care about that.

These days if people want children there are options available to them.  You'd think a professor from Harvard would know that.

Tenure is bad. Unless it's protecting conservatives who take a stand against "political correctness run amok." Then it's good.

I made the mistake of watching one of his documentary series, thinking it would just be a standard history of the world type thing. And it was... For about ninety percent of the time. Every so often though, I would have to pause it in shock, thinking to myself, "Did he really just say that?"

Yeah ok guy, GOP, shepherds of the future. LOL

Too bad the future you people would usher in would see North America as desertified and blasted as your average Mad Max scene, and run by people like Glenn Beck, who would rather his God smite the earth than girls have OTC birth control access.

Everything about you people is short sighted failure. Make a quick buck off of honest people. Smarmy used car salesmen the lot of them.

At first, I was like "Harvard?  Didn't they give Fartbongo a degree?", but then I noted that, as I am also a hypocritical, social conservative bigot, that this guy's views really confirmed by worldview, so I'll give him a pass.

Back when whites ran everything, America was awesome for everybody.  Except the gays.  And minorities.  And women.  And poor white immigrants from Europe.  But other than that, it was awesome, and we should fight to take America back!  To the 19th century.

He is a case of a moderate appearing individual, delivering his schtick in a moderate tone, saying  things, that upon reflection, are deeply partisan.

If you want some really satisfying antidote to Ferguson's clever smariness dressed up in British "respectability", watch Simon Shama, who IS the real thing. Very enlightened, smarmy right up front, dubious"respectability, and delivers solid intellectual analysis without any attempt to disquise his POV in cleverness. His commentary on America is pure gold.

I like this article, it's proof that just because you went to or taught at Harvard, it doesn't mean you're smart.

Because gay people never raise kids and straight people always do. Makes total sense.

I hear they don't teach that at Yale.

Ferguson is a joke and a hack and living proof that one does not go to Harvard for an education.

I suppose I should break it to my gay friends with kids that they don't have kids. This will be awkward

The Conservatives need gay people to take care of all the dumpster babies that they'll end up with if they stop abortions.

I've got a new favorite author who refers to them as the Soviet Harvard economists, who think as if, were they ornithologists, birds couldn't fly without their influence.

Since we're dealing with a name dropper, let's reach over to Richard Dawkins suggestion that gay people still contribute to the success of their genes by making things better for their breeder relatives. This might suggest why homosexuals are over represented in the arts and environmental sciences. Or those might be a bunch of attention whores and I have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm just crafting a narrative to fit an impression that might have nothing to do with reality.

2013-05-05 09:36:14 AM
So make it easier for gay people to adopt. This gives them incentive to think about the future and gives good homes for kids who need familie. Win win.

HotIgneous Intruder: And they call folks with kids, "breeders."

Your attitude about quite a few things -- especially people without kids -- shifts after you become a parent.

True. For one example, having kids made me realize what a big farking deal that is, and ultimately switched me from pro-life to pro-choice. I love my kids, and this isn't a knock against them, but a kid can change the entire trajectory of a person's life. For the better? Sure, in some cases.

Whenever I talk to young couples that tell me they're waiting to have kids, my standard response is "Take your time. Make sure that's what you want to do first."

I guess she doesn't care about the future either?

Don't you just love how the religious Right create problems and then uses those same problems to further disenfranchise people?

"Gays can't think about the future because they can't have kids" - then stop pushing legislation banning them from adopting
"Gays are more likely to suffer from depression and other psychological issues so they shouldn't be able to _____" - then stop disowning your children for being gay, telling them how they're dirty heathens that are going to burn in Hell, and trying to keep them second class citizens

Of course, right-wingers in general do it to gays, women, the poor, etc.

Or people coming to terms with their homosexuality later in life after a (failed) straight relationship, in which they have children.

Educate yourself, "professor"

This reminds me of when some people say that belief in God is the only thing that stops people from being immoral, murdering cannibals. People who think this way are dangerous, and probably sit comfortably on the spectrum somewhere between narcissism and sociopathic. Because they can't empathize or think outside of their own selfish wants, they think no one else can either. I know plenty of people without kids who are actually MORE concerned about improving the future lot of mankind than some of my other acquaintances who have kids.

I have no kids and I seem a lot more concerned than a lot of FARK "conservatives."  They seem to think God/the "free" market will make everything great if we just stop oppressing rich people and corporations.

SphericalTime: I was just thinking that it's pretty obvious he's a really bad historian.

He's actually a pretty good historian.  The problem is somewhere along the line he went from writing economic based history to thinking that because he could use economics to explain historical events he also a demigod of modern economic theory.  He started to make a career off of "This policy will result in the same thing that happened in historical event X".

However he ignores that business people also read history and typically do things like adjust their business models.  The Ascent of Moneyis a great read until you reach the point where he starts using banking panics from the 1800s to predict crises in modern credit, despite the fact that some of the practices that led to those panics have been outlawed/regulated/refined and we've installed social safety nets to prevent other factors.

Of course he's very much a doom and gloom guy, so after the 2008 credit thing his star went into the ascendant.  If he stuck to just history and didn't try to write commentary as if he had an economic PhD, he'd be fine as he has an enjoyable writing style.  However his ego leads him to keep picking fights with economists and getting his ass handed right back to him.

2013-05-05 11:07:13 AM
Well you have part of that right. There are no shortage of racists, sexists or homophobes among the Democrats.

If you want to see racism, be a minority that disagrees with liberals.

If you want to see sexism, be a woman that disagrees with liberals.

if you want to see homophobia, be a homosexual that disagrees with liberals.

Then again, it's not as if most liberals actually believe in that whole 'justice' and 'equality' thing they talk about so much anyway. They're perfectly happy with injustice and inequality as long as they are the people in control.
