The word started as "hepster" as in "hep cat". It quickly became "hipster" and was applied to people who weren't jazz musicians but lived like one anyway.
ften: I'd hardly call the Carolina Chocolate Drops eclectic, but I guess if your hipster from DC you've never heard of Bluegrass or string bands.
