Insurers of surrounding properties eat the loss for property damage. I assume building owners have insurance if only because mortgage lenders require insurance.

Apparently, in Texas it is not legally mandated that you have insurance coverage even if you are engaged in a hazardous activity.

Well done, Rick Perry.

Most states only require like 1m in insurace for commercial businesses. Granted they made the law like 100 years ago when 1m would be like eleventy brazillion of todays dollars.

If this bothers you libtards than you will just make your own fertilizer plant and blow it up through lack of safety inspections and monitoring while making sure you have a large amount of liability insurance coverage.

I had an interior decorating / painting / floor refinishing business that carried TWO MILLION in liability.  No explosives, no acres of potential blooey in the hot sun, just paint.  Latex paint.  And wood strippers and tung oil.  And we carried TWO MILLION.  Find every last one of these dime store cocksuckers and shake them by the heels until their last nickel falls to the floor.

Was this a private business, can they go after the owner's personal assets?

2013-05-04 09:13:32 PM
Business sucks, their GL already costs an arm a leg because of their activities so they forgo their commercial umbrella coverage and drop all of their policies down to minimums.  It's been known to happen.

/The lesson as always- know your liabilities and insure them thus.

You know what?  I've looked into that and the inherent weight ratio to available force as well as gravity and linear placement of the boots beneath the lifting force, that comes from the overall weight that needs lifted, make that impossible.

Actually one million a hundred years ago is somewhere in the $20-30 million range -- and that's how much you need to be a "millionaire" in the early-20th-century sense.

utah dude: imagine that rich white republicans doing what they please screwing the lowly people just to increase profits, and stay richer.

I've got news for you- it aint just rich white conservatives. Could I walk through your house and find no food produced by immigrant farm labor, no manufactured goods made by sweatshop labor, no jewelry produced from gems and precious metals by workers in near slave conditions and no computers or consumer electronics that pollute the third world shiat holes where they are made and ultimately disposed of? The nature of capitalism is that in order for some to rise some must fall. Criticizing others for doing the things that keeps the system that keeps you comfortable going is hypocritical. How many tears do you shed for the lives your lifestyle impacts?

At this point, I think "libtards" falls pretty heavily under Poe's Law.  It's been thrown around so heavily by people who really believe it that it's not a good measure on its own of whether a post is serious or not.  Of course, it IS a good indicator of whether somebody else should take that post seriously, since anybody who uses such a nebulous label as either "liberal" or "conservative" (yes, there are conservatives out there who don't eat babies, drown kittens, and kick puppies) as an insult is clearly either trolling, being sarcastic, an utter moron, or some combination of the above.

2013-05-04 09:23:26 PM
...you're also free to not build your house next to a fertilizer plant.  This seems to me like the airport/housing delimma.  Properties are priced like shiat because you have  airplanes flying over your house.  That's the trade-off.  In this instance, your home was (or should have been) below market value for a similar home because you have a fertilizer plant in your back yard in a state that doesn't require much oversight of its fertilizer plants.

2013-05-04 09:23:26 PM
Do we know who made these regulations which provided these insurance levels?  It is the Texas government, but which one as I suspect that these regulations have been in place for awhile.  Before everyone goes crucifying Rick Perry, maybe find out if this issue was enacted by his government and the legislature.   Even if the hazardous industries have to carry more insurance, remember this owner specified that his business had low risk which we know is flawed.  This decision would have allowed the business to wrongfully skip higher insurance levels.

At any rate, the business is gone, the grain silos will be liquidated, and the personal assets may be at risk if the owner didn't properly run the business as a corporate entity (which I suspect may be an issue).  It certainly sucks for all the people located in the area, but sadly underinsured companies often run until there is a horrible accident and then fold.  This isn't an unsual circumstance unfortunately.

bobtheallmighty: fark I almost have more coverage on my car...

My renters insurance is twice that. I don't think the company even offers less than 1m. And the difference between 1m and 2m was something like $10 per year.

Course, this is filthy socialist Canada, so that may explain the difference.
