Meh, maybe if christians hadn't made it their goal to interfere and try to legislate everyone else's lives, there wouldn't be so much animosity towards them even in youth sports. As it is, I'm glad the little prick got dq'd for not following the rules, and his little 'but jebus' defense didn't work. Farking Canuck: This article is very thin on details but one thing that was made very clear is that he was not disqualified for religious reasons. Repeat ... not disqualified for religious reasons.

Bears repeating.

That being said, it's still a silly reason to DQ someone for excessive celebration. But to take this as a sign that Christians are being persecuted at track contests in rural Texas (it's in the middle of farking nowhere!) is incredibly stupid as well.

Fallout Boy: Mrtraveler01: Fallout Boy: Fark atheists give /r/atheism a run for their money.

You know this story has nothing to do with religion right?

But I guess you have to nurse that persecution complex that some Christians seem to have somehow.

What are you talking about? I am referring to the farkers in this thread who didn't RTFA and said that he deserved to be DQed because he thanked god, and not because it was excessive celebration.

Listen, I know that part of your job as an internet atheist is to jump on anyone that appear to disagree with the world view that you have perfectly figured out, often before giving yourself the time to rub your two brain cells together, but next time, do me a favor and drop that "you are with us or against us" bullshiat. Just because I disagree with atheists in this thread doesn't automatically make me a Christian.

And I'm not an Athiest.

I guess that makes two of us.

I just get sick of Christians whining and complaining that they're being persecuted because they aren't getting special treatment. I hate it when the rest of the Christian community is lumped in with these assholes.

Anyone who thinks DQing someone for pointing toward the sky under the premise of excessive celebrating, from the ref and probable Christians who made the rule to people defending the ruling, should not be allowed out of their room let alone a public forum to spread their drivel for the world to see.  You sir, are a shame to reason and an example as to why some people still question evolution

It was the rule that none of that was allowed. The athletes knew that, and he chise to break that rule. If he didn't like it, he should try to get it changed, not ignore it and claim jesus made him do it. And so far your argument has consisted of calling people douchebags, not reason, so I would say you are the outlier in the evolutionary chain.

The judges made the right call on this. Religion has no place in a government funded school event. What if a kid on the other team had been muslim? Not only does he/she feel horrible about losing, but now they've got some christian bigot rubbing it in their face. Relay makes my blood boil.

I wonder why the rule was put in. Most rules are based on some incident or trend. Kids thowing up up the shocker at the end of a race? CFL style coordinated dances? I suspect it wasn't a bunch of mom's wanting everyone, winners included, to get a participation ribbon, but track officials addressing some growing concern.

In the NFL it wasn't the shaprie, or the phone, or the pylon, or the pom poms that got props banned from celebrations. It was the trend.

Monkeyfark Ridiculous: I doubt there's a religious angle here. Mostly it looks like prick officials jumping at a chance to fark someone with overzealously enforcement of a stupid rule.

Perhaps. But perhaps they were doing the job they were asked to do and enforcing the rules they were asked to enforce including one whose interpretation that left them no wiggle room. Zero tollerance with all it's benefits (not playing any favourites) and problems (harsh penalties for innocent mistakes).

"Repeat ... not disqualified for religious reasons "

I want to know when raising your hands / arms at the end of a race became 'excessive celebration'?    How sensitive does the losing team have to be to be intimidated by the raising of arms?    Have we, as a society become such a bunch of complete wusses that we can be so easily offended?     And I have always wanted to ask,  ' when did it become a 'right' to not be offended.   If you are offended so easily,  stay home.

If watching the winner of a race raise his arms puts you off, maybe competing in athletics isn't your thing?

JohnnyRebel88: Joe USer: It's called unsportsmanlike conduct, you don't act like an idiot on the field. You can make an idiot of yourself afterwards.

As you so eloquently put, he should be allowed to act like an idiot "afterwards" is exactly what he did.  He crossed the line, thus the race has ended.  I guess we all define "idiot" differently.

Learn how to read...
High school track runner Derrick Hayes did exactly that last weekend after finishing a race in first place.

Right after, as in, at the finish line.

Those rules are there to prevent idiots like this guy from getting the crap beaten out of him by the other runners. You want to be an athlete , you learn to follow the rules and act like a decent person. You don't go celebrating on the track, that's childish, you want to celebrate, do it after the meet, do it off the field, do it anywhere else, but NOT AT THE FINISH LINE.

Atheists are delicate little flowers. They probably translated a silly upward point as an oppressive demand they submit to religion. They probably sued him after that as trampling on their rights as atheists to not have to see things that may or may not be religious. Then after forcing atheism on everyone they declared they weren't a religion and weren't forcing their values on anyone.

The kid was DQ's for excessive celebration, not for being religious.  The event occurred in rural Texas, which is not generally considered a hotbed of atheism.  In fact, there is absolutely no reason to assume that any atheists were even present at the track meet.

I get it, you want to feel like you're being persecuted, and I suppose I can understand your desire.  Allow me to help; the best way to feel persecuted for your faith is to go to China, Iran, or Saudi Arabia.  They'll help you out.

goatleggedfellow: Quite sure that the sky pointing is not humble and Jesus-like. Praising God as you finish is taunting everyone else by saying God favored you and not them. It's an insult, regardless of the other runner's faiths.

The refs couldn't have been punishing him for being a Christian because he wasn't being one.

It's amazing how the Christians in here keep whining and crying about being persecuted when an idiot kid breaks the rules and tries "but Jesus!" as his defense. What, is being the dominant religion in the US, having 500X more churches than any other country, putting the Ten Commandments in front of courthouses, and trying to force everyone else to follow you still not enough?

You also might want to be careful, you're doing exactly what your god and his kid told you NOT to do. Or does the Bible only matter when it comes to your bigotry against gays?

Ha. Funny. But I was raised with sportsmanship. When you win, be gracious. When you lose, be gracious. Always act like you've been there, always respect your opponent.

Sure, I'm just okay with a bit of leeway between the ideal and the punishment. I think the trigger for DQ should be somewhere beyond a kid's momentary display of excitement about winning a race or scoring a TD. I question whether it is helpful to require kids to maintain a professional detachment (particularly when we don't demand that from actual professionals).
