Oh FFS! Landscape NASA, landscape!

The rocket also launched three smartphones into orbit as part of an experiment to see if a consumer-grade smartphone can be used as the main flight avionics for a satellite in space.

Consumer grade smartphones in space? Boy, wait till NASA gets their roaming charges this month.

Seriously, am I missing something? Just from a weight/MIPS ratio, I  can't think of a more inefficient platform.

That's not true, subby.  I get excellent reception in the bathroom.  I talk on the phone on the time while I'm on the crapper.

Weight/mips is not the criteria.  It's off-the-shelf & ready today vs. custom-build that takes 18 months.

Give it a SECOND!  It's going to SPACE.  Can you give it a second to get back from SPACE??

Everyone who flies should be like this all the time: "AAHHHHH OH MY GOD I'M FLYING!"

I have found 5 earth-class exoplanets. None of them are fairly close to you.

Off the shelf super cheap cameras in smartphones are capable of taking these great pics with no manual adjustments,
yet there are still people who try to convince the world that the fuzzy, out of focus pics they take of UFOs/Bigfoots/ghosts are legit.

Technically, every human in history has lived in the modern age, but I see your point: I always tell people I'm so glad I'm alive in 2013 and really look forward to seeing what new wondrous technology we will have in 2033. Those who long for the good old days have no idea how bad things actually were.

And this isn't a publicity stunt by the phone makers?

Also, didn't a kid do something similar for a science project?

No, not even technically. Not even remotely. Modernism is as peculiar as any other age. "Modern" does not mean "recent."

I didn't understand that. Did you say, "Vent all of the oxygen in the craft?"

300 packets in 3 days? That could be slower than dial-up! Depending on the packet size.

kayanlau: 300 packets in 3 days? That could be slower than dial-up! Depending on the packet size.

It's old-school dialup: 1200 baud AFSK, with the satellite moving rapidly across the sky (and doppler-shifting its frequency as it goes) so that it's only in range of a given ground station for a few minutes at a time.
