Am I the only one hoping the Caps/Rags go into quintuple OT as to totally fark with the Kentucky Derby coverage?

Of course, they'll just move the OT off to CNBC or something...

Donnchadha: Am I the only one hoping the Caps/Rags go into quintuple OT as to totally fark with the Kentucky Derby coverage?

A few years ago they were perfectly content to stop broadcasting a playoff OT game (Sens & ?) to cut to the 2+ hours of pre-race nonsense.  The suits running things don't give two shiats about hockey in general & would much rather air stories of pretty people playing grabass with each other & talk about funny hats regardless of what is going on in a hockey game.

Personally though I'd love a quintuple OT game as I'd be streaming it & enjoying watching some phenomenal hockey being played.

As a Caps fan, no. We had one of those last year (OK, only treble, but still), and my boys were gassed for the rest of the series.

Sens & Sabres...wasn't that the year the Sens & Ducks went to the Finals? I think it was.

The whole thing was a load of garbage because, at the time, NBC Sports (formerly versus, nee the Outdoor Channel) wasn't very widely available, so a lot of folks had to miss the end of a great game because of a two hour swan song for goddamned Barbaro (who had won the derby the year before, but  gone to the glue factory in January of that year). Bunch a horseshiat.

At anyrate, I'm with you...BRING ON QUINTUPLE OVERTIME!!! I want Caps/Rags to finish up just prior to the puck drop in Detroit.

After much thought, and beer, I have decided to pull for a Toronto / St. Louis final.  The Blues and I were both born in 1967 and that's also the last year Toronto won it.  As much respect as I have for Iginla, I just can't do it.

What excites me is Wings are now with Tampa Bay  and Panthers. I basically had to be able to devote whatever entire day to hockey when we had a game to be able to watch Wings live, which happened once in the last three seasons (including this one which had no such games).

I was really hoping the Wild would at least put up a fight, but after watching that game last night, it's clear they've given up completely. I wanted Chicago and Minnesota to go 7 games, with a few games going to 3 or 4 OTs, but it looks like the Wild will be easily swept aside.

As for my Wings... DeKeyser is gone, but we have Bertuzzi back. DeKeyser has turned out to be phenomenal, truly the difference once he joined the team. Lashoff is replacing him.... not sure I agree with that decision. Colaiacovo should probably have been given the go, maybe he's not 100% yet.

If Detroit cannot make it past Round 1, Babcock needs to go, and Holland needs to dig into his bag of magic tricks to assemble a couple prime pieces this summer.

Lidstrom, Stuart and Holmstrom are no longer with the team and they were without Bertuzzi and Helm for pretty much the entire season. Then there are all the other injuries, too numerous to list. Babcock should get a 10 year extension for getting this team into the playoffs. A top 4 defense man and a role player or two, and the Wings will be one of the top teams in the league next season.

I disagree. I think the early part of the season being beset by injury and illness and loss of Lidstrom and Holmstrom in a condensed season with the new names being interspersed to great effect to continue our playoff streak means Babcock did something right, especially with how he has used those new names and made all of them truly work on different lines.

Yeah, you're wrong. Sorry. If they don't make it out of the first, Holland needs to go. Look at the job Babcock has done losing Nick Lidstrom, Brad Stuart, Jiri Hudler (who was terrible) and replaced with, what? Carlo Coliaccovo (who Holland signed, despite a career riddled with injuries)? Mikael "Sambags" Samuelsson (who is terrible AND spent the entire season on the IR (blessing in disguise)).

Detroit iced a line-up missing Darren Helm ALL season, for pete's sake. Babcock got great minutes out of Brunner, Andersson (a rookie, working his way into the top PK pairing), Nyquist. He's got Kindl, Ericsson, and Smith playing solid minutes and got away from the terrible turnovers early in the season.

This was a rebuilding year. That they even made the post-season was remarkable. I don't believe that either Holland or Babcock should be fired if they don't advance past the 1st round this year. But if either of them should go, it should be Holland for not making moves at the deadline to improve the team long term and to get something for players with expiring contracts (see Hudler, Jiri; see also Filppula, Valterri).

The bottom line is that between the loss of the second greatest defenseman OF. ALL. TIME. and the massive amounts of man games lost to key players this season, they should probably both be given a raise.

I didn't think the Wild looked like they had given up; they just got overwhelmed because the Hawks were on their game. Suter playing a human amount of minutes gave the Hawks all the room they needed.

I don't follow the Wings too closely (Habs fan), but are lots of Detroit fans really wanting Babcock or Holland gone?  I knew losing Lidstrom would be huge for that team, but it seems they still have some great pieces of the puzzle, and like you said, made the playoffs when they were expected to possibly miss for the first time in... I dont know... forever?  Ken Holland was praised for years as the best GM in sports I thought, and everyone always said how well-run of an organization the Red Wings were.  They've had some great years, and I enjoyed watching some of their runs as a general hockey fan too.  I also like Babcock and loved his time with both the Ducks and Wings.  The Wings can't be dominant forever right?  It seems crazy to think people are saying Babcock or Holland should go after this short season...

Frozen_Puck: It seems crazy to think people are saying Babcock or Holland should go after this short season...

You know, Red Wings fans are a crazy bunch. There's a reason that we have a certain *ahem* reputation around the league. Many, many DRW fans were calling for Holland's firing in the off-season when he didn't sign Parise AND Suter. Several seasons of not being in the hunt for the President's Trophy has also led to calls for Babcock's head. I think it's crazy, but given the past 22 years, unless they're a favorite to win, fans want heads to roll.

What gets forgotten is that the system that's been in place for 22 years (not overpaying for pieces, developing through smart drafting, developing within the system and retaining young talent (who sign for a discount; see Howard, James) is both why they're successful, and, now, why Pittsburgh, Chicago, etc. are successful. Love 'em or hate 'em, the Detroit Red Wings franchise from the top down does things the right way. Blowing that up because they don't win the cup every year is crazy talk, but it's talk that happens every season around the free agency period, the trade deadline, and when they get ousted early in the post-season.

I think there was so much to be encouraged by this year (Jimmy Howard, the play of Andersson, Nyquist, Brunner, Tatar, Smith, and DeKeyser) that it'd be crazy to dump their prospects and picks to make a big splash. But seems that's what the fickle fanbase wants. They forget that Pavel Datsyuk was a consistent playoff under-achiever early in his career. But by coming up in the Detroit system (as the above rookies are doing now), he's not a super-star and a mentor. Why change that culture?

Okay, done rambling. Short answer is that yes...I frequently hear Wings fans that want Babcock and/or Holland gone.
