Your FFPL report for Round 36

farm9.staticflickr.com

Thirteen games in this round, Unlucky for one?

No report last week owing to a trip to Las Vegas. I return ruined and dissolute. However, at the top, I slightly extend my narrow lead as the Dorian Grey Theorem between FFPL and EPL results gains credibility. Obamartins has consolidated second place, whilst Cognitive_Displaysia and kcostell scrimmage for bronze.

At the bottom, ScouserDuck and 30/30 both increased their totals by more than 10% whilst DesertMoloch cramped to a -30. All are being outfought by Nobiology, who hasn't entered predictions for four months.

I was top scorer for the week with a stolid 115, ahead of Obamartins on 95 and Mr_H, and The_Envoy on 90. At the other end of the spectrum, a mighty -90 from lost_limey, only prevented from a negative triple figure spectacular by a cruel home win for MCFC against West Ham - quite an achievement nevertheless in a ten game round. ADubs86, NorfolkingChance and HaywoodJablonski glad to have their performances obscured.

With the 13 games in this round, there is the potential to do yourself some real damage! Can a hero break that -100 threshold?

At the top of this report is the FFPL logo I bodged together in PowerPoint in under 20 minutes. Interested parties should submit logos to these threads between now and the end of the season, and we'll pick one for the 13-14 season.

3 games to go!

Banker this week is on Tottenham crushing a weak Southampton with nothing to play for, and my insurance chip is on Chelsea to squeak past Manchester United, but I hope I'm wrong on either game. Or both.

-90? Holy crap I done farked up.

Now to pick quick for this week.

Should be an interesting Merseyside derby tomorrow.

Apparently I'm in 3rd. I picked my team on the basis that they had names from Yorkshire...

Ok, crazy stuff happening in the Hull City/Cardiff match... Good god

2013-05-04 09:42:16 AM
Peterborough, Wolves and Bristol are now out of the Championship and into league 1.

2013-05-04 09:44:42 AM
All of this in Injury Time:

Fans rush the pitch, after they hear a whistle assuming the match reached FT, and hence, promotion for Hull City. Instead, a foul was called in the box.

Hull City gets a PK, it gets blocked.

Cardiff pushes the ball forward and gets a penalty awarded to them. Handball.

Nicky Maynard converts the penalty.

Full Time: 2-2.

Hull City now has to wait on the Watford result, I think.

OH GOD. THE WATFORD KEEPER BOTTLES IT

Holy effing sh*t.

Hull City are back!
Last time out, they brought an inexperienced Jozy Altidore. Good luck getting him now. Try for Joe Gyau.

2013-05-04 09:59:38 AM
And something almost as crazy for Watford, who is denied automatic promotion after giving up a goal in the 90th minute. A chip from almost outside the box that the GK had his hands on, and bounced out of them and into the goal.

So Hull City indeed gets their promotion and Watford enter the playoffs.

Keep in mind this is the most of the Championship I've ever watched.

I'd like to see a more stable backup goalie situation sorted, a more solid right back (I've been a big Sagna supporter but when he makes mistakes they hurt us badly). Arteta is solid but he's over 30 and probably due for an injury considering how many challenges he has to make as a CDM.

A lot of the youngsters are coming into their own: Gibbs, Jenkinson, even Ramsey is getting his game squared away (although he needs a lot of work on his shot selection). Ox is still a bit raw and Wilshere needs a lot  more honing than I expected. He's enthusiastic but terribly reckless.

Our front line just isn't fluid, isn't clicking. Maybe Podolski needs surgery and rest. Maybe Giroud needs time to gel with the English game. I don't even know if Gervinho is salvageable, or if maybe Theo will blossom next season. It's all possible, but Arsenal has damaged my faith that it will.

I'd still go after Sissoko from Newcastle.  He's got jet engines for lungs; imagine a three-man midfield of Sissoko and Wilshire with Cazorla in front of those two.   That would scare the piss out of any midfield in football.

I feel that's because he feels like he needs to do everything in order for Arsenal to be successful.  Give him some pieces that click and you'll see him calm down and maximize his potential.

Giroud's done well all things considered; was probably a bad time for him to be suspended.  I still think Arsenal need to spend big on a true striker.

As a current inhabitant of Portsmouth, there's a little bit of cautious optimism about the future of the team. Chenrai has been ousted, the finances have been more or less fixed, the fans own the club and the stadium so the only way is up. I'd imagine next season they'll flirt with the playoffs, but consider that they were weeks from being wound up and ceasing to exist, League 2 is comforting

I'm not as familiar with Sissoko's game, but your description of him makes him sound like he'd fit into the Gunner's system pretty well.

I feel that's because he feels like he needs to do everything in order for Arsenal to be successful.  Give him some pieces that click and you'll see him calm down and maximize his potential.

I don't doubt that Wilshere will get better. I'm just hoping that it happens before he launches into some reckless slide tackle and breaks one or both of his legs.

Giroud's done well all things considered; was probably a bad time for him to be suspended.  I still think Arsenal need to spend big on a true striker.

I don't dislike Giroud, actually, but criticism where it's due, he's taken some bad shots. I like his physicality and movement and intuition about laying off the ball. Some of his misses have been unlucky, but he could stand to improve his targeting. I don't actually see many issues with his shot selection.

I have 2-2 before the team selections and I think I'm going to keep it there.  Also it should be noted that Everton are still 5 points above Pool with both teams having 2 games left. Almost certain to finish the better side of the two for the second year in a row.

Stimied in a Rut: Lindegaard in goal to try and get him enough games to get a medal as well as Anderson.  Back line isn't too shabby, but the midfield and keeper selections are a little suspect.

They changed the rules. They give the medals to the club and the club can distribute them however they want.

I switched to 1-1. I hope for the united win but chelsea ain't gonna give up any points if they can help it.

It happened to my mother. When I was a child she was a sweet lady from Connecticut. Never cursed, refused to watch R-rated movies, even baked homemade cookies for her protestant church's bake sale. Then she was bitten by a shambling Uruguayan at the airport in Salto. At first we didn't notice anything different, but after a few weeks she said she was craving Taco Bell. Later on, I saw her lingering when she passed Univision in the channels, and one day when we went to Costco, she asked the cashier for a churro, but she actually pronounced it correctly, "un churro". Even the cashier got a smirk, but she didn't notice it. I didn't say anything when she started wearing ponchos instead of her traditional sweaters when the weather cooled. Then one day she just walked off. Maybe she's raising sheep in Montevideo. We really don't know.

Watched it twice, including the replay. Watch Rafael's eyes, he's not looking at the ball when he kicks Luiz. The assistant was right there, if it can be interpreted as intentional, it's a possible red.

So let me get this right. An ability to visualize the pitch is not a talent that is to be heralded, but faking an injury is?

a)  There is no question Rafeal chose to intentionally chop down Luiz after the ball had gone
b)  Regardless of whether Luiz exaggerated it (he did), that's still a possible red card, particularly with an official right there to see it.

That's not the point. Rafael looked as if he intentionally kicked Luiz, it's violent conduct. That's a card every time. Maybe not red every time, but certainly a yellow.

It'll be interesting to see if they can hold on to Benteke.  Villa paid, what, £7 Million for him?  They might get triple their investment if the price is right.

If I were Arsenal: Sell Podolski, buy Benteke, stick him in the middle and get a LW (perhaps De Maria?).

2013-05-05 01:53:17 PM
The math is nerve-racking for us gooners.

IF we win the last two games we have 73 points.

--

IF Chelsea wins their last three, 77.

IF spuds win their last three, 74.

Now obviously both teams can't win their last three games as they play each other midweek, but the scary thing is the spuds winning. If Chelsea wins we can scrap for fourth, but if the spuds win we not only have to win both our games but hope that they flop in one of their last games.

So here's hoping for a Chelsea win or a draw midweek.

They really do.

Villa's line-up that day (Dec 2009): Friedel, Young, Dunne, Cuellar, Warnock, Downing, Milner, Petrov, Young, Agbonlahor, Heskey.

According to Wiki, Luke Young (a) now plays for QPR (but was/is injured and not included in their 25 man squad), and (b) played 7 times for England. News to me.

Arshavin is out of contract after this season, so he's nearly off the books. Not sure who would be willing to pick up Gervinho's contract.

The counter-attack actually :-) Just the beautiful simplicity of it. Raw pace and power, and nobody having to break stride.

Agreed about Fletch. Terrible decision, and as far as I'm aware they still haven't changed the rules to allow appeals.

I took a guess because I thought all 3 goals were pretty awesome actually.  The skill it took park to lift the ball over from that angle and falling backwards was pretty impressive.  I did love the counter attack and seeing Ronaldo sprint 50 yards and bury it in the top of the goal. I do miss watching him play every week even if he did dive every so often.

Loic Remy has an out clause in his QPR contract, apparently, and has reportedly said he'd like to come to the Gunners if the papers are to be believed.

Fiorentina striker Jovetic is apparently the first big target but Juve likes him and Man City does, too.

But all of this is moot if Arsenal can't lock up a Champions League spot.

Listening to Gary Neville analyze all 3 wigan goals really makes me appreciate his defensive knowledge and just his knowledge of the game in general.  He will be a great manager some day I bet and announcing games will be worse off when he's gone. He is one of the best analysts of any sport I would say though I don't watch enough hockey or baseball to make comparisons there.  Steve Young does a good job for football, but isn't on screen enough to make a difference.  College football and bball announcers are too bloviated and bombastic to do an accurate analysis.  Every game that has Gary Neville doing either color commentary or studio analysis is head and shoulders above the rest in recent times in my opinion.

I really wanted Yeovil to choke today, now I'm losing out on a short road-trip east or a short road-trip south west. Could've done without another poke oop north.
